my bossman bought our firm a drone for takin pictures of our projects while they're under construction and he hasn't registered it w/ the FAA yet i thought that as of like last year they got all pissy if you didn't but apparently not yet

the drone registration law went into effect today actually i think, couple dudes were grousing about "two days left" earlier this week on the radio. iirc anything over 1/2 pound has to be regged and anything over a higher weight you gotta have a basic pilot license or something for?

actual aircraft and watercraft carry people and should be protected from psycho rednecks with guns and lasers by the strictest laws any craft that's out of bounds and only carrying cameras or a missile is fair game

i feel like needing a pilot's license for something so small is pretty silly, tho, registering it if you're flying for a business, and height restrictions make a fair bit of sense i guess i kinda just dont see the difference between equally as heavy and dangerous RC planes and RC quad copters? both can use cameras, one can hover better and generally has better software and is less likely to crash? the only user error likely to gently caress much up is running out of batteries or trying to do dumb stunts also uh, shooting into the air is something you should obviously not be doing except like, in bumfuck nowhere in an actual hunting area it's probably going to kill the homebrew quadcopter hobby scene more than a little bit

my cousin works for mitre and is currently supervising a bunch studies that the faa requested to help them write policies regarding drones. specifically the faa is looking to develop policies that'll allow amazon and courier companies to use drones for deliveries. a lot of the stuff he's working on is basically "how many ways can you be injured by a drone"

one of my neighbors works for the FAA doing drone public policy stuff (and teaches drone pilots or smth) - i should ask him about the new rules and how hard they're planning on nailin people to the wall over them since around here there's quite a lot of that goin on he's also makin noise about drone racing but hoverwife shot that poo poo down hard since i'm not allowed to have fun

its a microcosm of the whole problem we've had for the past 50 years or so since onset of information age/computers/networking. can/should throwing camera drones into the mix means adding a third dimension to privacy/security concerns that we previously did not pay attention to. I mean sure there are spy planes but those are run by the government epipen posted:just dont see the difference between equally as heavy and dangerous RC planes and RC quad copters? both can use cameras, one can hover better and generally has better software and is less likely to crash? the only user error likely to gently caress much up is running out of batteries or trying to do dumb stunts fixed-wing and manual piloted RC choppers require a bit of skill and investment, meanwhile the explosion in smartphones gave us $3 accelerometer chips that turn literally any idiot with a couple hundred bucks into a spy cam operator peeping their neighbor's wife's titties or creepin on they kids or w/e

iirc phantoms already have no-fly blocks programmed in and people are GPS hacking to get around them, that will end well the big thing about drones to me and why they are worse than just a fat guy in the bushes is that they can get the gently caress away real fast and you have no idea who that was, theres no tail numbers, nothing like adsb or whatever. yeah there are anti stalking laws, did we just invent a thing to make them irrelevant tho
