Spatula City posted:jesus, it's like you all are attacking my childhood here. My mom's been listening to Prairie Home Companion and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me forever, and I kinda just acquired the taste for it eventually. I guess I get why people find it boring - it's like a food either you eat in childhood and grow to like, or never like. It's pretty low key, the aural equivalent of Sunday morning legacy comic strips in the newspaper, but that means it's relaxing and reassuring. I think what annoys me most about NPR is the problem I have with the rest of the media. They're becoming increasingly less watched while becoming more and more relevant since almost all news filters down from them. They seem unable to call Trump reprehensible for his racism and misogyny, incompetent for his total lack of vision or policies, dangerous because he's mentally unfit or a liar because he lies at an astounding rate. Hillary isn't the greatest, but she's competent. You know what you're getting from her. No one has any idea what a Trump presidency would look like. Probably not even Trump. The media refuses to take any sides and has totally ceded their credibility because they can't take a position that isn't somewhere in the middle. So people who aren't political junkies look at the news and don't know what to think because you have an anchor asking questions of two people with differing opinions and lately those opinions have been increasingly awful, then the media at large tries to find an opinion between either one or two awful opinions. And all that lies between the spectrum of two awful opinions is that the "truth" is awful too because they're taking that bullshit seriously, but in the middle of course. Also PHC is pretty good. Never listened to a full one all the way through unless by accident, but whatever. If it's on it's on the rest of the night for me.

If you think this thread is bad now, just imagine what we'll be like next year at this time! Fun bit from Robert Costa et al. at WaPo about the backstory behind Trump changing nothing on immigration. My major takeaway is that the Trump showrunners are very much high on their own supply, and apparently think the two speeches yesterday "won him the election." I always find it fascinating when it's not just the PR flaks who get run out to proclaim the party line, but the entire apparatus that's existing apart from objective reality. I'm looking forward to the confusion of their team on election night.

Ice Phisherman posted:Isn't it only around 5% of their funding now? Only if you look at the top line. If you start digging into the public media foundations and individual stations that help comprise the other top-level line items, you find out it's a bit bigger. I think it's somewhere around 35-40% if you look at both direct and indirect government funding, but it's been a while since I ran the numbers. EDIT: Found it. The national arm of NPR gets about 20% of its funding, directly or indirectly, from the Feds. ComradeCosmobot fucked around with this message at 03:44 on Sep 2, 2016 |

The local taco truck in my neck of the woods is an old school bus they stripped the paint from, ripped out all the seats and replaced with bar stool seating, and looks like it's a couple welded spikes from appearing on the set of the next Mad Max movie. The tires are purely decorative. I love that place dearly.
