silence_kit posted:Do you know a lot about this? What was the major technical obstacle to the idea? Even if it weren't technically hard, the idea is a little dumb in that people don't really care about customizing the functionality of their cell phones. 1) impossible to build a phone as compact as a consumer wants, because you are purposely designing in a bunch of redundant structural and connective elements and encapsulating every individual piece instead of jigsawing them together down to the micrometer 2) purposely spreading out all the technology throughout the phone and connecting them via pogo pins or whatever makes everything slow as gently caress 3) impossible to make it sturdy enough to drop without exploding into confetti while also making the bits and bobs on it easily removable 4) the concept is loving stupid and no one would give a poo poo about swapping out phone components Linguica fucked around with this message at 18:38 on Sep 2, 2016 |

oh yeahquote:An app on the phone will let you toggle the magnets on and off, and the 30 newtons of force in the on state should keep the modules from flying off when you drop the phone.

they were supposed to be electropermanent magnets, so at least they realized the 90 seconds of battery life you'd get otherwise i think electropermanent magnets need a tremendously powerful initial field though to set up the magnetization so dunno where they were planning on putting those coils

you have to store your credit cards inside your phone because your phone erases the physical ones it's great for change though

the verge finally asks why google is just poo poo and what i could have told you years ago (and did) http://www.theverge.com/2016/9/2/12764558/google-alphabet-cancelled-products-project-ara-summer-2016 cremnob posted:fuzzy mammal the sooner u let go of any loyalty u have to google and start treating it as a job u do at a lovely company the happier u will be. google x and the like are jedi mind tricks from management designed to brainwash the drones working for them. they want u to think u work at an innovative tech company, but really ur working at an internet utility that makes its money selling search ads. just ask ur self why the "innovation" never materializes into anything real. i tried to save fuzzy mammal years ago but he wanted to believe so badly. he could have started the next mini microsoft blog for google and it would have been a cult hit for everyone in silicon valley and the press covering it. it would have been more meaningful than the years of work he's put into hangouts, only to see it flounder because of managerial incompetence. there is no 20 year vision at google, there's just larry and sergei who checked out years ago from google and then formalized it with creating alphabet because they had delusions of being the 21st century GE. these punks are academics from stanford that just happened to stumble onto a goldmine by accident. they hire people like them with the same elite pedigrees thinking this is the key to success and have nothing to show for it meanwhile apple, the company started by a college drop out and whose executives all come from state schools (the only exception being scott forstall who went to stanford and coincidentally? no longer works there and makes broadway plays), continues to dominate. google is good at doing computer science and other science projects that they will never turn into business or product success. they won't be around in 50 years
