Feds Accuse Texas of Misleading On Relaxed Voter ID Requirementsquote:[U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales] Ramos last month ordered Texas to spend $2.5 million to educate the public about relaxed identification requirements for the looming elections — an attempt to ward off any confusion after a federal appeals court struck down the state’s strict photo identification law — often referred to as Senate Bill 14 — as discriminatory. Worth adding that this comes after at least a few Texas officials - including, of course, Ken Paxton - have said or heavily implied that voters could face charges if they can't prove they were incapable of obtaining one of the forms of ID required under SB 14.

a friend of mine runs a distillery and tourist trap outside oaxaca city (a little past the town with the big tree) and he gets coyote; he was able to sell it to tourists for about eighty bucks a bottle before the currency crashed a year or two ago. he'd go on a long salesman spiel about how it was mystical and the only agave that was mildly hallucinogenic but i never bought into it. that stuff was excellent but still doesn't beat the poo poo old farmers sell in plastic bottles on the side of the road

Looks like big box stores are now saying "If you're going to make us pay property taxes, we are going to leave and create a giant abandoned building in the middle of your suburb, you had better value our property at what that decaying eyesore of a closed store is worth or we swear we'll do it." http://www.dallasnews.com/business/retail/20160912-will-big-box-retail-s-dark-store-strategy-lead-to-fewer-taxes-in-texas.ece quote:A strategy successfully used by some big box stores to cut local property taxes paid in Michigan and other states is now being tried in Texas. In at least four counties in Texas, the Lowe’s home improvement chain has challenged its tax bill, saying its property should be valued as if the buildings sat empty. Only the stores, which are in Bexar, Harris, Hunt and Taylor counties, remain open. The so-called dark-store strategy was coined for the industry term that describes a store that’s been vacated. Retailers who use the argument to protest their property values say if the business leaves, the empty building would be hard to fill. So far, North Texas counties haven’t seen the strategy used by big boxes, but they worry it could be spreading. And they say if large stores are granted big reductions, the tax burden will fall increasingly on homeowners.

Hm, if I were a complete sociopath I'd want this to work and then demand that my place be valued as if I abandoned it and left fetid pools all over to breed mosquitos. But I'm not nearly as sociopathic as a corporation. Oh well.

My mom's husband was on the city council for the small DFW suburb of Richland Hills about a decade or so ago. Sam's Club had pulled out of their location in that suburb and moved to another one, and had just left the building empty. It was a tough situation for the town, because the giant empty building on their one commercial street really prevented any kind of development from occurring. (Not to mention the loss of sales tax revenue.) Getting someone else to buy/lease the building was pretty much impossible because the only businesses at all interested in it (or capable of spending that much on real estate) were Sam's Club competitors that Sam's refused to sell/lease to. So yea, big box stores can gently caress cities over in a number of unexpected ways.
