Anatomy is a surprisingly creepy game, there's just something inherently off putting in a dark suburban hallway.

One of the designers on Alien: Isolation made a little horror prototype called The House Abandon that you can try for free. It's a game about playing a text adventure, so I'm pretty sure there's some spooky fuckery that goes on between the layers.

I will look forward to it, even if it has underwater spiders.

Just finished up my first play through of Until Dawn for my let's play series and drat what a great god drat game. I really want to go back and replay the chapters but I also want to just replay from the beginning with a new game. Has anyone played "Emily Wants to Play"? I picked it up on the PS store because it was cheap and I need stuff to stream, and I've avoided trailers and such so I'm going into it blind as possible.

IDK I didn't have much of a reaction to anatomy. these are just stream of consciousness thoughts there are some moments that feel tense when you're just, you know, sitting in the dark, but I feel like those moments exist in every 'walking simulator' game ever. I was expecting something mindblowing from the narrative based on what people were saying here but it really fell flat for me. Maybe it would have felt more powerful if I hadn't played Imscared, which I feel did the "the game's not over..restart" thing a lot better. I also felt like the game got significantly less tense once things started 'breaking down. I don't really like intentional 'glitches' in games. they feel really lazy at best and immersion-breaking at worst. I would have really preferred if like, the layout of the house was just subtly changing or something.

"Emily Wants to Play" is garbage. The sound mix is loving awful and either too quiet or too loving loud when the jump scares happen which happen entirely too frequently. What a waste of time

Despite the monsters being modded to be "passive", SOMA still got a scream out of me when the teleporting guys with lightbulb headscame to say hello. I'm really enjoying it, though, and with the mod it's striking the right balance of creeping horror and exploration with having to worry about jump scares. I love horror but man do I hate jump scares. Edit: days late but sorry about the busted tags. Hellburger99 fucked around with this message at 22:21 on Sep 3, 2016 |

Jump scares have completely overstayed their welcome for me at this point. It just feels like the creator's are indirectly admitting that they aren't sure how to properly make the player freak so they're falling back on invoking a physical reflex instead.

Despite being reviled by certain folk, I still think that (at least the first of) the Five Nights games made great use of jump scares. That poo poo didn't just happen at random, but because you done hosed up. Git gud. Yes, I genuinely like the Five Nights games and am looking forward to seeing Sister Location. What of it?

FNAF did jumpscares well because there was a process to them rather than just having them dumped on you in the middle of a random hallway. You sometimes know they are coming because you can hear something or even see something (in the case of losing power), and that is what makes it all the worse. I have never actually beaten any of the games because I don't like jumpscares, even if they are well done, just because my poor heart can't handle hours of that stuff.

FNAF 4 is genius because it makes you strain to hear the audio cues for the monsters, setting you up to get blasted full-force in the face if you gently caress it up. You have to lean into the jumpscares to avoid them, it's brilliant.

Absolutely yes. I have an example of pro and con jump scares because I was just thinking about this yesterday. Pro: Until Dawn. Plays with the jump scares and feels like they're trying to have fun and get a rise out of you without it being just LOUD NOISE THING IN YOUR FACE. Not to mention the game itself is gorgeous and all around fun so when a jump scare happens it's more like a fun house. Con: Emily Wants to Play. Aimlessly wander around a house with no real directions on how the mechanics work or what you're supposed to do then LOUD NOISE JITTERY DOLL IN YOUR FACE deaths. It's infuriating because there's nothing else to the game to engage with other than "Well I guess I'll wander around for a while and wait to trigger the doll to kill me" 99% of jump scares in movies and games annoy me because they are either too obviously set up, or they're just the loud noise/thing fills the screen jumps.

The first one was good fun and while I myself at least got pretty done with them, I can appreciate that the game's productions have never relied on just being the exact same shtick every time, when god knows people would still buy a billion copies of every sequel even if they were. The dude actually puts work into mixing up and developing his creepy animatronic games, when he could easily rehash for the same payouts.

al-azad posted:Satire has to walk a fine line and in the end Harvester really doesn't have anything to say about its message. It almost gets there but it's too blunt and eager to gross out. It's kind of an early look at the "Would you kindly" twist where you're trying to reach this nebulous goal while performing seemingly innocuous tasks moving from simple vandalism to straight up arson. At its core it's a fun commentary on adventure game logic where the main character is often a destructive trickster (like Monkey Island 2 where you imprison a woman to solve a puzzle) but meanwhile the secondary characters are murdering, raping, and loving each other from the start which immediately destroys the illusion. On the other hand the "1950s neighbourhood is secretly bad" cliche is really tired and having everything be bizarre and awful from the start helps make Harvester feel a little more unique.

I've been playing through Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon on 3DS lately. The controls took me a while to get used to, but what a fun, goofy spookfest. I liked the original Luigi's Mansion on Gamecube but haven't played it in like 10 years, so I forgot all the personality these games have. Luigi is constantly terrified, which is hilarious, and he does a lot of slapstick pratfalls when poo poo goes down. Even then, there are some legit creepy moments. I think this would be a good gateway game for kids or people who aren't necessarily into horror games.
