Mr. Smiley being gay isn't a bad thing Imo. It just feels forced somehow weather the time they have to tell the story is at fault or its just not a thing IDK. We also don't see alot of him to begin with so who knows!

We also don't see alot of him to begin with so who knows! i mean, a character's sexuality is allowed to be something other than straight without it being a plot point. someone's sexuality shouldn't define their life and while its important for shows to openly discuss character's sexualities and their subsequent struggles, it's just as important to have those kinds of small details in the background.

But no, he's still just a kid and the other gems are literally raising him because his mom (their former leader) is dead and that's why he's always around them and why they're so patient with him. Hey I think the show opens up kinda poorly, so if you're already at least enjoying it just know that it gets a lot better. I binged the whole thing over a weekend and went from "ehhhh" to "goddamn I can't stop thinking about this show". It's in a super good place right now too. The smartest thing it does early on is not overwhelm you with new info, it pretty consistently introduces like one or two significant facts about the world or a character each episode which makes it a show that grows really naturally.
