You should be able to pre-order to an apple store and pick it up launch day or the next day. You'll have an appointment time and probably be in and out in 20 minutes.

I said 'other options might be cheaper' :

- selling the handset and migrating to android, probably the biggest thing the upgrade plan seeks to block

There's nothing stopping you from selling the handset; it's not locked. You're still responsible for the payments until you pay back the 0% loan you used to buy the phone though. You can also cancel the AppleCare for a refund if you want (although the person you responded to said they wanted it); it just means you can't do the 1-year upgrade and only have a 2-year 0% loan to buy the phone.

Carriers won't sell you a phone without a service plan, they have no inventive to do that.

Who knows what demand will be. The iPhone 6 was huge demand and sales wise, and this is the cycle most of those customers will start to be eligible. But it depends on how excited people get for whatever the iPhone 7 ends up be8ing.

Personally, I saw a lot of people hold out for an extra year or more to get the iPhone 6 (bigger phone) vs the iPhone 5 and 5S. It wouldn't surprise me if that happens this year and then whatever is next year's phone is the big seller.

I thought I didn't qualify. I was considered, what was it... volatile, self-centered, and I don't play well with others.
I know this isn't really a huge dealbreaker but I've had my iPhone 6 since launch and enjoyed sending Animated Gifs to my friends once in a while. Recently, after the newest update, I can no longer save animated gifs to my phone properly. I know the entire deal of "The image won't animate while in camera roll" which I deal with, so that's not it.

To double check myself I've sent a friend an old animated gif I knew I successfully saved and sent in the past, and tried to do it again by saving the exact same gif off a brand new google search.. and to my dismay the image from google no longer saves as an animated gif on my phone. The old one I had saved and sent months past still works correctly in iMessage.

Have any of you guys encountered this?

Edit: Seems like the culprit was, specifically, the latest Chrome update. Dunno what to say about that since it's my main browser. Any workarounds?

Chrome > Safari. I only open Safari if some app I use doesn't let me switch the default to Chrome, or if I need to save a GIF. The smarter workaround is to just use Gboard and search for GIFs inside your Messages app.

Safari definitely feels lightweight and snappier on both macOS and iOS, but I prefer Google's set of features. I like on iOS I have a drop-down menu to search in the page (instead of doing it from the URL bar), I like it's tab manager better, I like swiping across the task bar to go back and forth between tabs, I like pull down to refresh or open a new tab or close the tab.

Safari lacks all of these features that make use of the touch screen and swipe gestures. Which is perplexing as gently caress because it's made by the same people who make the loving phone and OS. Google seems to have a better grasp on how to make a browser feel like it was designed for the OS than Apple does.

On the Mac, the one crucial feature that Chrome has over Safari is warning you before you cmd-q quit the whole app. It doesn't happen often, but every once in a while I go to close a tab and hit Q instead of W and Chrome saves me from the hassle of reopening/loading 30 tabs for work. Bless you, Chrome.

Oh yeah this is definitely the first time I'm expecting a feeling of "I probably won't give a poo poo about this" but I'm still really curious to see what actually is new about it over my iPhone 6, other than the 6S 3D Touch gimmick and maybe a better camera.

As for tomorrow's announcement, despite all the talk about how the next phone is rumoured to have just removed some stuff and not added anything new, I'm still looking forward to watching the press conference.
From MacRumors, the current list of rumored changes (from a good source) are:
  • New, faster A10 chip (obvious)
  • Storage capacities of 32 GB, 128 GB, 256 GB
  • 3 GB RAM on 7 Plus (still 2 GB on 7)
  • Five colors - silver, gold, rose gold, dark black, piano black
  • IPX7 water resistance (this is what the Apple Watch is)
  • No headphone jack; Lighting Earpods and Lighting to 3.5mm adapter in-box
  • Earpiece is a full speaker for true stereo
  • Pressure-sensitive click-less home button with haptic feedback (similar to MacBooks)
  • Wide color display (using iPad Pro 9.7" tech)
  • Dual-lens camera on Plus
  • Upgraded rear flash with 4 LEDs
  • Upgraded proximity sensor (possible)
  • FeliCa NFC support for Japanese models
There's been some others bouncing around (including a blue color), but those are the from the best source. And that's not including any iOS 10 changes that haven't been revealed. I wouldn't say it's as minor as people have been harping, but I also don't see myself upgrading from my 6S.

Of that list:
  • CPU/RAM/Storage upgrades are pretty standard
  • Most people won't notice the proximity sensor change
  • Home button is an implementation detail for IPX7 and shouldn't affect users
  • Headphone jack removal will be controversial and a usability downgrade to many users
  • Screen gamut improvement isn't that useful outside graphic designers

So the changes for a user are:
  • New colours
  • Waterproof (though arguably the 6S was too, unofficially)
  • Better speakers
  • Better camera flash
  • NFC in Japan

I can see why people are considering it a minor bump, compared to the regular 2 year cycle Apple has been working to. Obviously there's a lot of implementation effort going into making each of those happen, but none of them are game-changers.

I find it hard to believe that apple would put different amounts of ram in the phone depending on screen size.

90% of the complaints regarding the iphone 7 looking like the 6S are nothing more than apple fanboys getting upset that people in the street won't be able to immediately tell from a distance that they are using the latest iphone.

Since I really don't want a Plus, looks like I might be skipping out on this generation unless the camera gets a huge improvement on the regular human-sized model. Although it might be a good opportunity for me to upgrade from a 6 to a 6S. Was there much of a camera bump between those two?

Everyone enjoys a re-design, and Apple has been giving us one every two years. So I can understand why people might be blah about that.

Or it could be that 6 might be the worst looking iPhone? It is a step backward from the 4 and the 5 in design (but I do like the bigger screen). If someone was that concerned, just get one of the new colors. All subjective, but drat the 4 was a work of art.

I will be going from the 6S 64gb to the 7+. Given how I use my phone I am looking forward to giving the larger screen a spin. My only debate is memory size. I believe I can get away with 32gb since I store all my photos online using the Flickr app, and I use Apple Music for streaming. Still it has been nice to have a 64gb.

Yeah massive bump. 8 to 12mp, 1080p to 4K video. Camera in the 6s/s+ is so so good.

Why? They do it with iPads Pro (12.9" has 4 GB, 9.7" has 2 GB), which I'd argue have a much stronger argument for having more RAM. It's supposed to be in support of the new camera module.
