Their friendship's implied to have been when they were both very young, before either of them turned into terrible people. I think it might even be implied that Maggie's the way she is at least partly because Wrathia decided to start acting out BPD or whatever in her best friend's body.

What?

I'm pretty sure one of these general webcomic threads introduced me to it but it turns out one of the webcomics I really liked, Blaster Nation, has one strip left before it ends. Which is kind of ironic, given that not too long ago they retitled it "Blaster Nation Forever".

It's not really surprising considering over the past year updates got kind a bit sporadic at times, but it sucks that they're shelving it and ignoring all the dangling plotlines they left for themselves to pick up on later, especially after dragging things out by going from three days a week to two to just one, and then missing updates half the time. It also kinda means they effectively don't make comics any more unless you enjoy porn comics that update twice a week. I tried checking their other thing out but I'm not even going to link to it because clicking back a few pages it's apparently just been weeks of hardcore loving and uh :yikes:

Also I would be remiss if I didn't mention how the blog post in the latest strip is them explaining that they didn't update last week because they were shocked to find out their fans weren't happy to find they were shutting down their original sfw comic to focus on their porn comic despite them promising they weren't going to do this.

rip good comic, it was fun while it lasted

Blaster Nation was pretty good but if they want to move off to another project then it's best that they just shut it down, too many great comics are let down by having months between updates with "oh jeez just been so busy guys" text boxes.

Sad to see it go but it's for the best.

But really, it's like Oglaf, just because people get their tits out on half the pages doesn't mean it can't still be clever at times.

I'll have to take your word for it because I don't like webcomics centered around porn. It might be amazing, but I personally enjoy media that I can consume wherever I am and not have to hide in the corner or wait until I'm in private or something. There's just too much other stuff available to justify it for me, although obviously other people feel differently which is fine because I enjoy plenty of stuff they might not like

Also it kind of rubs me the wrong way because in that post they explicitly said they were basing the pateron around Rock Cocks instead of Blaster Nation or just their general works because they thought it'd bring in more money, but that one of the progress goals was to make enough money to hire an assistant for Blaster Nation and hopefully get more updates out per week consistently. They did end up hiring somebody, and it looked like it did help with their workload, but now they're shutting down Blaster Nation and whoa what a coincidence according to their patreon they just happened to meet their goal to bring Rock Cocks up to 3 pages per week. I wonder if they found an assistant or something?

Like DreamShipWrecked said I'd much rather see it end than limping along on life support, meandering for years, but the way they've handled this kinda leaves a bad taste in my mouth. C'est la webcomics, I guess

At least BN is being wrapped up? Plenty of other comics just fall off the face of the earth and never get any closure at all. I looked at that post claiming that the patreon didn't mean that they'd be abandoning BN for their new project, and I'd get the outrage if they made that announcement a couple of months ago, but it's dated January 2015 and there are a good 200 updated that happened after it. Over 500 pages is nothing to sneeze at, and while their ending does seem abrupt, the equivalent of two graphic novels worth of content is a good stopping place. I'm not sure why all of the angry comments I just read seem to prefer the idea of BN continuing while the authors just aren't into it anymore over it ending, that seems just as unsatisfactory an outcome.

Disclaimer: I don't read BN or their porn comic, and don't really know much about either. I can think of several comics over the years that I was into that unexpectedly ended with no actual conclusion, and I'd have been ecstatic to get even half of what the authors of BN are giving readers in terms of closure for them.

So are they going to wrap things up by putting the characters in places where they're not losers and have actual prospects for their futures? That seems like it'd go against the spirit of the comic.

Shame to hear it's going, but I guess I already fell out of reading the comic regularly after I couldn't handle the suspense of the story set in the past with a two-armed man who only has one arm in the present.

I went through a bunch of my RSS feeds not too long ago, and was surprised at how many comics just stopped updating with nothing from the creator. There were several that had a "Sorry for the long hiatus, we're back!" post after a months-long break, then absolutely nothing for years after the return post. Some are even domain squatted or just gone now.

Anders Loves Maria came back to 'retell' in prep for a printing for like 9 pages in February, then ceased again.
Boxer Hockey had a couple of sputtering attempts to come back.
Dawn of Time (the silent cavegirl with a pet triceratops) just stopped suddenly in 2011.
Destructor had a very erratic update schedule before we got a "Our artist is going on an extended break to do other things, but we'll be back with a new artist!" 2 years ago and silence since.
A comic called Dullahan doesn't even resolve its page anymore, and it only had 9 pages before the school excuse (don't remember a drat thing about the comic).
El Indon went on indefinite hiatus in July, and I feel like it'll never come back.
Ellie Starling's Very Long Walk had a cliffhanger and a 'Last comic for a little bit. Not enough time' excuse...3 years ago.
Escape from Planet Nowhere appears to be Japanese person's blog now.
Kiwis by Beat suffered a similar fate.
Fanboys tried some sort of weird reboot after sporadic updates, then went silent over a year ago.
Fox Sister was sporadic and the last post was about how the creator was graduating in a couple weeks, and there were 17 pages left in this chapter; silence since.
House of Orr went on unexplained hiatus quite a while ago.
Kukuburi had a post mentioning a 'ramp up for an imminent return' 3 years ago.
Not So Distant has virtually vanished from the internet.
Max Overacts went on hiatus at the end of 2015 with promises of a return by June (and 5-6 strips before the hiatus), but nothing since.
Cheap Thrills just ended on a sour note.
Rosetta Phone, still in its introductory phase went on hiatus 'for winter break' and five months later the tumblr says they aren't doing it any more.
Roza the Cursed Mage stopped updating in 2013 and we got a few character sketches this year, and nothing else.
Sandi and Mari went on 'busy with games' hiatus 2 years ago.
Lair of the Dreaded Atrox just stopped updating.
Last of the Polar Bears creator had a baby last year and hasn't done anything since.
Tale of Tamarind has a 'working on new website and comics, more info later!' two years ago as a last post.
Tales from the Trenches (the Penny Arcade collab with Kurtz and a revolving door of uncredited artists) stopped updating without explanation in January (not a big loss, but still).
Three Word Phrase got a job storyboarding for Regular Show, but hasn't posted anything in quite a while.

I kind of expect that out of the internet. People will randomly go silent, and you'll never know if they moved on for better places, or they died quietly in their apartment and nobody's found the body. Most people don't plan for the end, and never want to finally close the book on their baby comic.

Back when I read Twisted Kaiju Theater, I remember the writer said that he had a plan omega comic written and ready for if something bad happened to him, which was an interesting approach.

Pouring one out for all the sprite comics I used to read back in high school that either stopped at some point or were abandoned and the owners let the domain expire

Unironically rip sprite comics though, even though way more than half of them just retold the story of the game they were from it's weird to think that generations going forward aren't really going to experience the sheer mass of sprite comics I was inundated with way back when. I did a reread of 8 bit theatre and Bob and George a while back and say what you will about the garbage they inspired, nostalgia aside I got more than a few genuine laughs from them both.

I'd look up other webcomics I used to read half a decade ago but the last time I tried with boxer hockey I came across the fireball 20xl callout and that site and the comics hosted there being such a big part of what got me into webcomics in the first place was so depressing I kind of don't want to dig around anymore. On the other hand, as an adult looking back it's super clear how loving creepy it was how hard grown rear end men and women latched on to cartoon characters so it's probably a good thing they're dying out

My favorite example of a sprite comic on life support is Pokemon X. Look, I used to read an unhealthy amount of sprite comics, don't judge me.

Anyway, that date posted about the latest page? That's not the date the comic was posted. See, the author got the idea when he started falling behind that instead of updating the calendar to the date the comic was posted, he'd post the comic he'd just finished making as the next date the comic was supposed to be posted, no matter how much later it actually was. Including "special" holiday comics, so back when he started doing this you'd see forth of July comics in October and the like. At first it seemed like he might catch up, but as you can see he's currently got six years of comics to catch up on, and given that the current page is different than however many months or years it's been since I checked apparently he's still stuck to this model.

IMO, sprite comics were the wild west of webcomics. I wouldn't go through that again but it's fascinating to look back on the poo poo people thought was acceptable or funny

I spent so much time reading sprite comics as a kid, it's ridiculous. The weirdest part is how I've mostly forgotten them. Kid Radd was amazing, although by some people's judgement, it's not a sprite comic because all the sprites are original. Of course, by that count, another favorite of mine, MS Paint Masterpieces doesn't count either since it's mostly original too. Then 8-Bit theater was great, but towards the end it was using a lot of mostly original sprites too, and it did a lot of really weird stuff with the sprites to really make it into something greater than the sum of its parts.

Bob and George was the only true straight-up video game sprites and recolors comic I can really remember and recommend. It had a certain dumb charm of its own.

Wrist Watch posted:

The thing that got to me the most about that revelation with Firebal20xl was just how much of a surprise it wasn't. You mean this man who was constantly making jokes about Sonic raping Knuckles in the butt, only ever depicted women as sexual objects, and hung out with a lot of his loyal fans half his age was up to something bad? He was also prone to throwing weird shitfits and exiling people who previously seemed like his friends. I can't even look to see how bad and offensive his old comics were because internet archive doesn't dedicate that much bandwidth to lovely webcomics.

The real tragedy is that there were a lot of better people than him making their own comics hosted on his site, and now their work is lost to the sands of time. The good news is that skilled, creative people can go on to do other good things. Tyson Hesse has gone on to work on published comics, and he did the Amazing World of Gumball comic, the new Sonic Megadrive comic, and his own original miniseries, Diesel.
