This is probably why the planet standardized on two day weekends. Three days are just too much, people's brains turn to sludge and they lose any ability to remember what was happening last week and need emergency meetings and planning sessions to reiterate things that were set in stone previously.

Not really. Your employment agreement should spell out your compensation for X hours per week. I'm fortunate that I a) don't really get called on to work more the a couple hours extra here and there and b)when I am, I get comp time in return. I've had other jobs that have tried to pull the "you know you should be grateful" or "you really need to follow-through" guilt trips, but I've either stood my ground or taken a hike and found another job.

If you keep letting them guilt or bully you into working ungodly hours, you're going to burn out young in this industry.

Yeah, I don't get the whole "work all the hours!" thing. If there's a major catastrophe, taking one for the team and putting in a bunch of extra hours is understandable and admirable. If there's an emergency every two hours, it's time to gtfo if at all possible (in some cases, I can understand why you would stay in the lovely job, but still....)

Pissing me off: People knowing what is causing an issue that was emailed to the team, when said issue was a pretty big deal, and just not saying anything. Sure, it was on a weekend, but they admit to having seen the email and just didn't respond for whatever reason, which caused me and another developer to each spend a couple hours on Sunday looking into the issue(work for an insurance company so hurricane weekends have a lot of activity in the company). Thanks for loving wasting our time because spending a minute sending out an email explaining what is going on was too much loving effort.

I don't care how many people I probably infected with COVID-19 while refusing to wear a mask, my comfort is far more important than the health and safety of everyone around me!

Our financial controller is a loving idiot. He's been having an email conversation all morning with some scammer who's impersonating another person who works at our office (the emails look like they are coming from tomjones@ourdomain.com but they're really going to like tomjones@ourdomain.spammerdomain.com). The whole email chain is "Hey can you do something for me? Can you send me a wire? I'd call you but my cellphone died..." and he's playing along hook line and sinker.

Around 11:00am he puts a helpdesk ticket in saying the emails look funny. 45 minutes later he asks "should we block this person as spam" when he's STILL emailing him back and forth.

I wrote back that we can't block every malicious email and we should be more careful about requests that come in to wire money (we never ever do this for people that work here anyway, he's not his personal finance manager) and we shouldn't be wiring money based upon email requests in the first place.

He writes back on the ticket "Wow great advice thanks for your help"

Get all pissy with me when you fall for textbook scams. :shrug:

The best part is we had this same thing happen a few months ago with him falling for fake emails from the owner of our company.

About 8 months ago there was a surprise mystery hire. A guy showed up requesting equipment and when I asked around I found out he supposedly had worked for Google and was going to do... something. His connection? He was engaged to the daughter of a friend of the CEO.

I had no idea what he was doing. No one told me. The guy said he was working on "projects" for the CEO. The CEO directed me to buy him whatever he wanted. Equipment, domain names, etc. Just get it. The guy did drop by my office one time to ask about our bollixed Salesforce implementation.

Today I get an email that he quit yesterday. No warning, just a "I'm off to do something else, bye!" email to my boss. Scrolling through the email I was forwarded by HR I see that whatever his project was the CEO only looked at it on Saturday for the first time and is now asking questions about it, how it works, how it will be maintained. It must be some sort of roll your own CRM since he said it didn't look any better than Salesforce. One of the VPs suggested pulling me in to a meeting since I'm in charge of technology and must know all about it.

There's a reason I say this place is dysfunctional.

It's the most I've ever been paid for the least work I've ever done. Too bad it's a terrible place.

My $AWFUL_JOB was full of stuff like this. Someone would just show up with the boss/owner, and we'd be told this person is going to partner with us to make $DREAMS_COME_TRUE and they needed all this stuff that had to be setup instantly. Sometimes I'd stay all night or work a weekend to get something setup for them, and then two days later they just never appear again and we never talk about it.

As a salaried and exempt worker, I shoot for 35 hours a week. If I have to do overtime some weeks so be it.

Pissing me off today: the US banking system and how loving behind it is in the whole "send money electronically" business compared to the rest of the world. The insurance company I work for is going to be implementing EFT payments as a way to pay out to customers, and the process is manual as all hell. There is a federal standard for the file format, which is good and fine, we can generate that just fine, and that is the one good part. After that everything is manual as all hell. The file our system generates has to be manually uploaded to a web site by a person, which is then processed by the bank the next day. A person has to manually check to see if any payments were rejected(due to bad bank account number or whatever). If we had to ask for the money back that is also a manual process. There is so much loving human interaction required in this process it is just beyond dumb.

Our bank doesn't have a SWIFT code. Try explaining that to a foreign company who wants to give you money.

All of this is very true and it's a huge pain. What you should do is ask your bank for an API to use to transmit the data to them. Most banks have some form of method to get the detail to them without needing a person, even if that is just "Upload to this FTP site and our server will pull the details :v: "

Although I am concerned that the full company doing EFT might overwhelm their manual systems, since instead of the occasional life payout there are going to be a large number of payments daily.

Well, yeah, a company that just hit $1 billion in revenue recently probably shouldn't be using a tiny little 2 branch local bank, but that is a decision made by people with 1 or 2 more digits to their paycheck than I have.

Get a new bank. Even our tiny bank, headquartered in a village of a thousand something people, gets things like EFT service. It isn't in house, they go through a bank that just provides this sort of thing to smaller banks.
