I can do it! it's basically been said already, but GABA is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, ~90% of your neurons are GABAergic. alcohol (relatively) gently and positively affects all of these and it's hard to reverse these effects without going overboard and causing seizures, as suppression of inhibition causes widespread overactivation. opioids are different because they only affect a very specific and tiny proportion of neurons, so shutting them all down with naloxone doesn't gently caress your whole brain. same with cannabinoids

but yeah basically gabaergic tone keeps the gain set for what would otherwise be a whole mess of interconnected positive feedback loops so it's under ridiculously tight physiological control. stuff that potentiates gaba's effects or release like booze or benzos is compensated for by dialing down the whole system, then you withdraw and there's not enough gaba around and its screaming howls of feedback everywhere
