The last Abner comic I saw in the thread, he was in New York or wherever the hell the explosion was. How did he get back to his podunk town if he can't even remember his name? Was this covered in one strip?

I hate this comic :(

Help a hero out!

I think what I like about Tina's Groove is how the author seems to want you to laugh with the cast re: their femininity and youth, rather than at them. If this were Dustin the joke would be written where we were supposed to laugh at Tina's friend for her Illogical Woman Desires (I swear I've seen strips with Dustin's mom buying shoes and everyone rolling their eyes), and there's countless strips where Tina is doing stuff on her phone and it's just... normal. Like a thing a young woman would do, and no one gives her poo poo or talks about how much of a degenerate she is for not talking to random strangers nearby instead. It feels really genuine, even if it isn't particularly funny sometimes.

I can only speak to my own university but our ID locks are only used during off hours for buildings with classrooms and offices (e.g. late at night, weekends); for obvious reasons residence halls are 24/7. I can't imagine one being used during regular class hours because of the massive congestion it would cause.

e: Oh, wait, the student id in the comic is on their phone? Yeah, no, plastic cards with magnetic strips are still the norm.

Bobulus
Jan 28, 2007

I've seen RFID chips in plastic ID cards, but never on your phone. In theory your phone is capable of NFC communication to unlock a building, but I'd be shocked if any school required it, as maybe only half the cell phones on the market today have NFC chips, and only a fraction of the student body will have new enough phones to have the hardware and OS to run the app. Either that, or they've got the least-secure security system ever and you're just holding a QR-code on your phone's screen up to a scanner.

And we never had card readers on classroom buildings, only dormitories and private research wings.

In the US they've just started rolling out chip and pin debit cards to major retailers. We're way behind Europe in both technology and infrastructure that it takes a good 5-10 seconds for each step of the process to go through. So the reader asks you to insert your card, then wait, then asks if you want cash back, then wait, then verify the amount is correct, then wait, then enter your PIN, then wait, then remove your card. Compounding the issue is some stores might ask questions in a different order or skip the cash back option or throw new questions at you like asking if you want to donate to a charity or something, so for people unused to them it's easy to yank your card out too soon.

Unrelated to our laughable banking systems, how old are these Go Comics posters? You won't have the widest selection, but there's wedding gowns out there under $200 that aren't flour sacks or Carol Burnett's Gone With the Wind dress.

That used to be an issue and there are still slight variations, but they basically always say when it's OK to remove cards and they just keep removing steps.

I work at a hotel, and we just installed these kind of locks last week. Yes, they're supposed to work with cell phones; the idea is that the guest can check in and obtain the code online and not stop at the front desk at all. I've not seen anybody use a phone to do it yet. Also the installers didn't code the linen closet doors right, so for the room attendants to get in, we have spoons jammed in the door frames so the doors won't close.
