i guess this is primarily a US/things people in the US would hear about thing but
1970s aus:
- The Dismissal (Prime Minister deposed by governor general, replaced by the leader of the opposition, still kinda a topic in politics today)
- Balibo Five, maybe
1980s NZ:
- Bombing of the Rainbow Warrior (protest vessel sank by french DGSE, caused total change in NZ international relations and defence policy)
1990s aus/nz:
- Port Arthur Massacre (aus)
- Aramoana Massacre (nz)
2000s aus:
- MV Tampa affair
- Children Overboard scandal
- Cronulla Riots
- Steve Irwin

worldwide stuff:
1950s you had things like the death of Stalin, the construction of the berlin wall
1960s you have the gulf of tonkin incident, gary powers being shot down, the cuban missile crisis
1970s was the jonestown massacre, the beginning of the 1970s fuel crisis
1980s: tianenmen square
1990s you have things like the Oklahoma City Bombing, Waco Siege, etc

no-one would've been taken out of school for those ones but people would remember them for sure

they first let people back through it in early november 1989, there were major chunks taken out for new crossings starting in december 1989, major desconstruction of it and the the much longer wall between the rest of east and west germany took place starting in 1990 and continuing to 1993, with most of the deconstruction being done for the berlin part by 1991.

the germanies reunited in early october 1990, when there was still a shitload of the berlin wall and inner german border still standing and generally being in the way
