Tom Welling actually refused to play Superman on screen, so he's no Superman.

Refused to loving hard that they had to get a body double for the scenes in the finale where he flys up and touches the plane window. And for the last scene they had to stick the S shield onto him at the last second which is why it looks so drat goofy.

gently caress Tom Welling. I heard he was actually pretty upset that he didn't get a shot at this new version of the role and I just hope he sat at home crying over it for days.

Why would he want to be the new Superman if he refused to be Superman?

I had a dream, too. It wasn't pleasant, though ... I dreamt I was a moron...
Gary’s Answer
All of the Supermen are flying through Smallville at super speed and fighting causing Man of Steel disaster porn everywhere, and it cuts to Tom Welling in a barn having a beam fall on his head.

Because when you have a cushy 10 year job where you're the center of attention you can refuse to do something simple because you have that power. And now that he sits at home out of work waiting to be in bad movies the suit doesn't look so bad.

If I remember correctly wasn't Paul Walker offered the role before Routh was but he didn't want to sign a long-term deal?

Huh. I guess Returns could have been worse.

IIRC Jude Law has also said he got offered the part in Returns and they courted him pretty hard, up to sending him a costume so he could see how he looked in it.

I'd heard Josh Hartnett turned it down because of the multi-film commitment. Ashton Kutcher claims he turned it down because the role is "cursed." David Boreanaz did a costume test shoot. Matthew Bomer allegedly was denied the role when they found out he was gay.

That's a nice summation of his entire non-TV career.

But man what a tv career. Two years as a side character leading to five years starting in his own spin-off, and then his own crime series for what, 11 years at this point?

I'm not knocking the guy's career but he really did want to break into film back when he was still young and it just did not work out.

Victor Webster was also up for the role at one point, somewhere I have a magazine with a ton of the back story but Paul Walker wasn't mentioned in our anywhere.

I may be confusing Paul Walker with someone else but I remember a lot of big names at the time being under consideration and a couple turned them down.

Jude Law as Superman would have been just weird to look at.

I'm not saying you're wrong, just that I never read that before. There were a bunch of names attached to Superman Flyby in the early stages as well but we all know that went nowhere. At one point Cavil tested for the Returns role as well.

The Question IRL
Jun 8, 2013

Only two contestants left! Here is Doom's chance for revenge...

There was also a Batman and Superman movie which was going to have Jude Law as Superman and Colin Farrel as Batman.

In other news James Gunn put up a very long Q and A on his Facebook.
The part where he is asked what what DC film he would do and he says

"My answer changes all the time. Shazam. The Metal Men. Doom Patrol. Batgirl. (Cassandra Caine version.)"

Made me smile.

Also, related to the Bomer casting, he was cast as Superman in the animated Brainiac film years later. This is because the animation division is separate from live-action, and though it's never been said outright that's why he was cast, it's pretty clear people on the animation side agreed with Lurdiak's opinion.

Really random, that Brainiac film annoyed me because it was a fine pilot for a series we're never gonna get. It's just like Johns Brainiac arc, complete with the New Krypton ending. No follow-up. What a waste. That arc would translate really well to a season of a Superman series.

I think they planned to do a sequel but that film didn't sell well enough to warrant it.

Deathstroke is going to be played by a fairly generic white dude one way or another. I don't mind Mangienello. Hopefully he'll be more compelling than any of the Snyderverse villains so far.

To be clear that was me dissing Deathstroke's appeal compared to more interesting and well-known Batman rogues, I don't really know the actor too well.

Even Riddler would be more of a draw.

Deathstroke was the lead villain in the Teen Titans cartoon. He's one of their more recognizable villains and he's also a badass guy with a KATANA which is basically enough to sell him to people.

Me too. I can think of so many actors who could do the role justice, and there are so many ways you can go with a villain that's so focused on intellect

The top villains have all been done so if this franchise wants to do something different they're going to have to use someone a little less recognizable.

Though I think the effect of a recognizable villain is not that big on the average (non-fan) moviegoer once you're out of the absolute top villain tier anyway. There's no way to substantiate it but I feel like the trailer, cast, crew, and any goodwill from previous movies has more to do with it.

The only worse performance than Tommy Lee Jones in that movie is the security guard at the beginning sitting about being melted in acid.
