WSS can correct me, but I believe that:
some head units have an aux-in
some don't but you can add one with a soldering iron
some you can add them, but you need a TECH2 to enable them
some can't add them at all

Don't get me wrong, it's not an offensive sound system. But if you like mp3 or loud music, it's crap and it is impossible to replace - so if that is important to you, get the spiffy one with lots of speakers and a sub, cause you ain't changing it.

1-Top down
2-Sunglasses on
3-Seat back and tilted to allow more movement
4-Love Shack to full volume (except in residential areas)
5-Singing voice to max

Pretty much spot on. There are only a handful of speakers in the 'vert. They don't sound awful (if the speakers aren't thrashed), but I wouldn't say they're better than any 90s econobox.

So excited this thread is moving again. I could use some guidance on what to work on next. Have a 06 v6 aero combi.

First is replacing the spark plugs. My shop will do it for a decent price, but I want to do it my self. I have access to tools and read some quick guides and it did not seem like much. So is this worth doing my self?

Second is my oil pressure sensor seems to have gone bad. It likes ring all the time even after a oil change. The part is cheap but seems very hard to get to. Some guides I have found list making a custom tool for it. Think I will have shop do this but not sure.

Last and the most worrying is the car starting to have big shifting problems on the 2-3 when the engine is hot. Was told atf was changed about 15k ago so I hope it's not a trans valve problem. One time the Sid showed a gearbox malfunction but when I stoped the tech2 didn't read anything.

This thread has been a huge help before so thanks everyone.

1- Plugs. I don't know about that particular engine, but they are usually dead simple to do, as long as the previous owner got them replaced the right intervals and so not seized into the block. Any monkey with a plug spanner can do them.

2- for me, 'custom tool' often means 'get a mechanic to do it' - but depends on your wallet and need for the car for daily use.

3- scary for me: that's what happened to my vauxhall and it ended up totalling the gearbox.

Anything worth noting about a 06 9-3T with 80k miles on it for $4,900? I'm not super familiar with Saabs and the missus has her eye on one. So far, the worst thing I can find online is typical euro-gremlins in the electrical systems. Almost no one has anything actually bad to say about these cars besides the cost of repairs, which I'm almost positive is price gouging from dealers and "European specialist" mechanics.

I plan on doing all of the repairs myself, but I just want to be sure that we're not getting a ton of expensive problems wrapped in 2 tons of steel

I guess that depends on your definition of 'thirsty' - I guess from the land of big trucks, it's not too bad.
Over here, where fuel costs are a killer, I'd expect something with a similar engine size/year to be mid-30's (though less fun) - and with our fuel prices, that's something of an issue.

it pumps out a lot of CO2 - again, not applicable to you?
But for me, it puts it in the 2nd highest annual tax bracket, so I have to pay £485 per year just to own it (as opposed to <£200 for similar donks) and if i used it as a company car, the costs would be insane.

If they aren't a problem for you, then I am jealous and enjoy your new toy!

Oh, you live in a country with legit environmental protection laws, that makes more sense. No, the emissions thing isn't applicable then, I thought you meant they have lovely exhaust systems that constantly fail emissions testing, America doesn't care about the pollution from individual cars. Illinois just doesn't want Chicago to get too smoggy, so we have "emissions standards" that I've never actually seen fail, including cars spitting out tons of unburnt gas, cars without a functioning catalytic converter, or cars that are getting less than 6 MPG on the highway.

Sweet, I'll tell the missus and hopefully we'll soon have a fun little tank to drive around in

By 2006 most of the bugs have been worked out. Make sure the ignition coils aren't original - if they are replace them along with the plugs.

I've been busy today.

There are a handful of NG900, OG9-3, OG 9-5, one C900, and one LG9-3. 3.0s mostly, and quite a few 2.3s. One 2.5, entirely unpicked. Of course the SIDs were all missing, along with MAFs, and the other easy to pick bits. I did end up with newer ignition coils for the 2006, a handful of ABS controllers, a wiper transmission, and lots of other goods for pennies on the dollar. I'll probably return tomorrow and take out the rest of the ABS controllers and maybe grab a couple of other goodies I have my eyes on.

If you want something super simple feel free to drop a note - tomorrow will probably be the last day I'm picking parts before I drop off the internet for another couple weeks.

You have to replace the steering wheel buttons to MY03+ for a 04 SID. On a 98-01 you have to replace the wiper fluid reservoir as well or rewire the pump - no idea how.

The pinout for a 02 to 04 is:

13 BK --- 32
6 BU/WH --- 27
18 GN/WH --- 26
9 YE --- 23
22 BU --- 24
5 RD --- 1
25 RD/BU --- 28
24 WH --- 31
12 GN --- 30
21 RD/WH --- 21
8 RD/BU --- 22
11 BN/OG --- 17
19 BN --- 18
23 YE/WH --- 25
20 GY --- 19
7 OG --- 20

Old Color --- New.

The contact housing is also different, part# 12798073.

I plan to do this as well but :effort:

I don't really want to poo poo up the new car thread with SAAB chat but right now there is a discussion regarding new cars, weight, and efficiency. What I don't understand is why this seems to be so hard for automakers. Saab was playing the turbo 4 game a long time before anyone else and in late 90s made 3500lb cars producing horsepower in the high 100s (or more), all while averaging mpg in there mid 20s and performing exceptionally in safety tests. You'd think it would be easier in 2016.

The old 9-5 was designed in the early/mid 90s and has engine management able to detect, based on ionization, the level of ethanol in your fuel. Not bad for a 20+ year old design, eh?

Car manufacturers are partly very conservative (looking at you, GM, before the crisis) and partly catering to the public. Americans had to have a V-engine, even SAAB had to make some because those were the rules. The conservatism is a hindrance to innovation, in my mind, and thankfully companies like Tesla make enough impact to force the rest of the industry to act. No need to innovate when the competitors are also sitting on the fence . Sadly SAAB is not around to push the barrier forward anymore.

If you are seriously considering buying a clone, be aware that they don't come with any useful software, and the pcmcia cards are fairly delicate. There is a good thread on SaabCentral. I've had very good results with startech branded units, but not clones.

I have built a d620 specifically for use with software which does not work when virtualized, however you can virtualize the majority of this software under Windows 7 and virtual PC. It does work with Windows 8 & 10, but it's a bit more of a bitch to care and feed.

For USB->RS232 adapters, FTDI is the tits. They even sell their own adapters: http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/FTDI/US232R-10-BULK/ is my personal choice. The LEDs flash as data passes to/fro the adapter, which is nice. $22 and solid driver support.

I go out of my way to avoid their products whenever possible due to the fact that they intentionally released drivers crippling cloned chipsets. Instead of rewriting the clones (they set the numeric self (pid) to 0- so that it no longer works, which they did in 2014), they now inject bogus data into the stream.

Seriously.

I can understand their wishes to keep their own intellectual property, but by destroying devices which the consumer generally has no knowledge of being a workalike, I will never trust this company.

I ended up purchasing an ICUSB2321284, as it was incredibly cheap ($5 shipped w/ 1GB USB keyfob with drivers), and was surprised to find that it works incredibly well for any serial/parallel tasks I've thrown at it, from a 32 bit XP kernel through 10 x64. The fact that it emulates LPT1 is just sublime, since I tend to need both of those for these sort of deals- and only needs one driver, and one port.

You should be able to check the pressure on the rails.. It's not like the crazy regulation they did in the last generation 9-3.

The Tech2 only has basic diagnostics [for communication with] your car, but anytime you need to program anything beyond basic settings, you will need to obtain a security level access. This requires randomly downloading different portions onto the pcmcia card for different diagnosis, connecting to a PC, and writing that data to the Tech2.

You're probably fine with TIS2Web, it still makes sense to have your own local copy. MY2010 was the last release for TIS2000, and I haven't figured out what's required in order to update the databases for use with newer firmwares [available in GlobalTIS]. Granted, this doesn't mean a lot for most, but you can't do anything with the newer 9-5s without it (They also want MDI, but that's another story).

E: Ugh god it's difficult (impossible) to get a coherent post done via Google Keyboard's microphone input.

And you thought they were cute and cuddly.

Decided to tackle some more items on my car today. Replaced both the fuel filter and the cabin filter since I'm not sure when they were both last changed.

Fuel filter was actually easier than the cabin filter due to ease of access. The cabin filter was a real pain in the rear end back due to the maneuvering required to work under the dash. I should have taken a picture of the old filter as it was super nasty, lots of debris built up, etc. I seriously loathe working under the dash and I might pull the seats out next time I have to do something. That was a tip I received after screwing up my back repairing the driver's side blend arm a few years back.

Quick question: The hose that attaches to the glovebox got detached somehow at the other end (non-glovebox side). Where the hell does it go?

Taking a break now before I tackle a few more things. This afternoon I'll probably try cleaning out my EVAP Valve (intermittent P0455 CEL). string alignment, and SID repair.

Edit: I forgot that I did take a photo. This was after it dumped it's contents all over my floorboard and I had vaccumed up a bit. This Valeo filter was replaced with a Mann.

Edit 2: Clothes iron + silicon baking sheet = I now have all my pixels back! (This is a newish ribbon that I tried installing a few months ago with a hot air gun.)

The 2006 9-3 is puking and set the MIL. Boy I love cars (that aren't mine). Guess I need to check the other ignition coils, then plan for a teardown (or throw-away).

So far I have left to accomplish on that car:

  • Passenger side sun deflector :suezo: (vanity flap broken).
  • Identify other not-really-a-problem issues and resolve.

Haven't had the time to do much with the 'ol car for a while but I had a few hours the other night and welded in new nuts on the strut mounts on both sides. I noticed some clacking going over speed bumps some time ago and couldn't locate any flaws in ball joints, bushes or otherwise. When I replaced my front shocks (B8s forever!!!) I noticed that one bolt was loose. When I checked them this time all but one was fairly loose so I welded in nuts on all three on either side.

No pics sadly, is was fairly dark when I finally was done welding (that the welds looked like shite has NOTHING to do with it - honest!)

The original bots were rusty and quite worn so I replaced them with generic ones. The original ones are 10.9 and the generic I had were 8.8 so I have to replace them. They felt a bit "squishy" when I tightened them. Guess that's grade 2 and 5 for you americans.

Also hunting down new winter tires as the ones I have are four years old now and that's no good for "northern" winter tires. Looking to get Continental ContiVikingContact 6 this time. My old ones are 5s and they have been great. The 6s have shown even better performance. Also going up to 205/50r17 and using my old 9-3 Aero rims so I can put in my 9-3 Aero calipers sometime soon. 308mm to 314mm is not a lot but I was concerned when I put on the 9-5 Aero calipers as the fit was so tight. Also my old 16" Linear rims are boring and awful.

Other than that I have to look over engine mounts and vibration dampeners. Sometimes I get a large knocking sound when I release the clutch and I replaced both bushes on the torque arm with Powerflex some time ago so it can't be that.

Over the past two weeks I have done three ATF drain and refills. Fluid is still coming out brown and if the car is really hot, it still slams on fast second to third shifts. Guess the valve body's have worn out. Going to talk to my mechanic but I don't really want to replace them as a rough quote was at least $750. Maybe if I do a drain and refill with each oil change it will keep the transmission together long enough. The car is currently at 125k miles so I am not sure what to tackle next. Coils are on the list, but the back three look like a massive pain to diy it.

The junkyard finds have motivated me to look at the few local ones, and of course all the saab's are 15+ years old, so wont be much help. hopefully after this winter there will be a fresh batch of totaled cars to pick.
