I believe you may have been using them wrong for a long time.

I forget which company it was, but one cell phone manufacture basically said "gently caress sd cards" and gave the reason that they were tired of people blaming their phones when the 128 GB sd card they bought off a random amazon seller for $15 would mysteriously corrupt after writing 16 GBs. It's probably not as big as factor as increasing sales of their higher capacity phones, but I can see their reasoning.

I'd obviously rather have an SD card slot than not, but I can live with the 32 GB built in storage.

Maybe it's fine for folks who live in the city and get good coverage and have big data plans, but I don't.

Whenever my phone hits WiFi it syncs all my photos and videos to Google Photos where they are automatically archived and indexed (photos are searchable, i.e. "dogs" will pull up my photos of dogs in my library) in full-res and available for download on any of my devices. This happens instantly without any user intervention and has never failed or bugged.

If you hold your phone wrong the bits have to flow against gravity. This aggravates the phone gremlins. Keeping your phone gremlins happy keeps your phone ticking over just nicely.

Yeah, but manufacturers don't wanna give it because 1) charging $50-$100 for an extra 16GB and 2) having to spend support time explaining to idiots that their 128 GB sd card is actually 16 GB and that they are idiots.
