If you are learning Mei, let me tell you one thing you should never ever do. You shouldn't put your ice wall directly in front of a payload when you're on defense. Ever. The payload plows through

I think trying to use the wall to stop the payload is something almost every new Mei tries once, and the bad ones are the ones who never figure out it doesn't work.

How the gently caress is Hanzo fair? Everything less than 250 hp is dying in a single loving shot. And it's always a goddamn scatter arrow.

Scatter Arrow does not, in fact, have to actually hit you. Generally the opposite.

In a game where road hog can hook me through walls, mei can basically permafreeze me with a football sized ult, and Mccree can snipe, stun and murder tanks, the only thing in the game I think is bullshit is Scatter Arrow.

i mean a scatter arrow instagibbing you is frustrating, but actually pulling that off is marginally trickier than just straight up spamming arrows at your head which can instagib a lot of things just fine so i don't think it's worth noting

Put up the wall very close to the cart, so close that you can get sit on the other side within the cart's aura that it doesn't move and won't plow through the wall. Not something to do as a habit but it can be a way to stall while the defense groups up on the cart.

I would say the good Mei just completely doesn't exist on the bad tier I play on so if you do the things that the people say here you should do it'll probably push you up the rankings pretty fast. Things that opposing Meis do that I laugh at and help me win on my bad level:

He wouldn't switch characters on Eichenwalde despite the enemy team having half the counters to Torb on both defense and offense. He didn't even get a good amount of kills and no cards. Now that I see his character record, he doesn't play other classes and doesn't get one of the basic concepts of a game where the developers have verbally encouraged you to SWITCH YOUR loving CHARS YOU CUNTS.

My last competitive placement match an hour ago had a level 20 mic-less pubbie Mei on our team. We were playing CTF and we lost. That level 20 pub deserved to be MVP. I have no idea who they are, but they made walls so well timed that I forgive them twice over for ult-freezing four times over five matches. PS - gently caress you, bronze star slampick genji pubbie, I couldda started at Plat you gently caress. The map didn't even favor him, Christ I have that guy.

I've seen people say Zen's M2 is worthless and that complaint doesn't make a lot of sense to me, because it's perfect for situations where you anticipate an enemy coming into view, or where the enemy is in a temporary "can't shoot this" state (particularly Mei, Reaper, D.va, and Genji). Genjis in particular will pretty much always hit their deflect key as soon as they've been discorded, and that's your cue to start charging.

So I've been playing again with the free weekend and OW is fun even if there's some design descisions I don't like, I've come to understand that say, only one loadout per character is probably in the best interest for the game balance wise. Anyways, in TF2 I really liked Engineer, Scout, Pyro and Spy. To what I've seen, Spy doesn't have anyone remotely close and Tracer is kinda like a more burst mobility Scout (with less overall map mobility). Torbjorn sort-of seems like Engineer, but with way less emphasis on a turret and that's all he has, so he seems only vaguely similar at best. Pyro, I'm not sure. I assumed Mei was supposed to be like it at first, but Mei's classed as defense. Also stunning people is way less fun to play as/against then juggling people in the air and burning them to death. Is there anyone Pyro-y? It was my favorite class by far. I saw in the career screen there was a "time on fire" clock but I don't see anyone who can do that unless it's part of Torbjorn's molten core or something???

Honestly the game just isn't tf2 and trying to draw counterparts doesn't really work as there's so many more characters than classes in tf2 and everyone is more like a specialised specific subset of a class rather than parallels. Play around with everyone, you'll find characters you enjoy that really have nothing in common with how you play tf2 - I was a medic/demoman/spy player yet here I am in everyone faces melting them with the power of gravity as Zarya, or more recently playing a role that doesn't really exist in tf2 as Winston.

Anatharon posted:I saw in the career screen there was a "time on fire" clock but I don't see anyone who can do that unless it's part of Torbjorn's molten core or something??? Being 'on fire' is a somewhat arbitrary concept that Blizzard put into the game that tracks whether you're doing very well by their standards or not. You can see the little meter in the bottom left of your HUD, and it will go up as you continue to do good things without dying, and once it hits a certain threshold you are 'on fire' (which is also shown on the TAB character overview screen by a flaming portrait background). It's arbitrary because different heroes seem to have different formulas for how quickly/easily they get to be on fire (I think Zenyatta is particularly egregious because he can do mediocre healing and damage and still catch on fire very quickly). It has no impact on gameplay, and is kind of useless as a stat to track because you can easily be on fire without doing particularly well during a game (and vice-versa if you make key plays in between deaths or play certain heroes). It has nothing to do with the status effect from TF2, but you'd have to be a mongoloid to be confused by that.

I always played Pyro in TF2 and my favorite characters are Pharah, Soldier 76, all the tanks except Roadhog (can't land them hooks) and the supports. I guess what you can take from this is that there's not really a Pyro class in this game. The closest you could probably get to airblast/Reserver Shooter is juggling people around with Pharah.
