I love how basically once a week someone posts about how Chaos sucks while also revealing that they played the campaign completely wrong

1. you dont want to create an empire in the north, its just to level up a bit and sack some towns for money. I never go further than the dwarves.
2. dont wait for troops to replenish naturally. disband/merge and recruit new units.
3. go south as soon as you can recruit chaos warriors. early game chaos will destroy anything the other factions can throw at you. you should not be playing chaos as if you're the AI and waiting until you have three or four stacks to go south.

Chaos is annoying and not very fun, but actually one of the easier factions to play once you get used to them. You just have to rush Chaos Warriors and any given army stack you have should be basically invincible, especially since all three Chaos LLs have the potential to solo armies.

My late game Chaos experience is two stacks of Chosen/Chaos Knights/Dragon Ogres mowing down everything in their path until the Empire and Brets are wiped out, which takes actually very little time. Birdman is also a chump compared to any of the playable Chaos Lords, if you split up he'll helpfully split up his stacks to pursue so you can just take them out one by one and go back to conquering.

Are you using the beastwalk thing and their encamp stance to hide from baddies?

Yea but I think the problem is that I try to play them like chaos and just rush way to hard, I haven't tried playing them since that post but next time I'll probably slow down and give myself time to build up stronger units.

When you make your second stack, transfer all the troops from your 1st stack to it. Your 1st stack will be able to train replacements way fast than your 2nd stack will be able to build population.

I guess "item set" is inaccurate, it's just one item. If you preordered Total War: Warhammer, when you launch DOTA 2, you'll be given a "Genuine Pre-Purchase Warhammer: Treasure of the Old World", which is worth about $20 on the Steam marketplace right now.

1. Then why have the ability to awaken tribes? It's pretty bad gameplay because you are assigned quests to attack the dwarves and move in that direction unless you want to get chewed up by Kislev. Like clearly the developers meant for Chaos to sack/subjugate the tribes in the north and then begin the march south.
2. I do that, you still cannot heal generals, heroes, and various monsters and they're arguably the most important guys in your army.
3. I do that with two armies. It's still super tedious for the reasons I mentioned. Like I think the developers rushed the Chaos faction when it comes to the grand campaign, because they have cool quests and a nice army roster but the mechanics of how they operate on the map and in relation to other factions seems rushed or outright broken, in particular rushing south and building up the tech tree because the AI doesn't match your units for a while.

It's also difficult to get a good rampaging horde going with the Chaos because of the horde infighting attrition they take. So you can only really fight concentrated for a single turn and then disperse or suffer attrition. It sort of defeats the purpose of a horde based faction if you can't concentrate your forces. Orcs do much better in that regard, and getting at least three main armies together to fight concentrated battles is a perfect way to summon Waaagh armies, which then just makes the Orcs into an avalanche of armies.

The infighting doesn't even make that much sense for Chaos armies, unless there was a mechanic for friction between units/armies aligned with different Chaos gods.

Oh poo poo I forgot to mention that, too. But yeah, that's a really silly mechanic, which causes you to take Lightning Strike (which reduces epic huge battles). It just seems poorly developed.

If anything it makes way more sense for the Orks to have infighting between armies, it's the primary reason why they generally remain splintered. In the steppes beyond the world's end mountains its pretty much just a massive green tide beating the poo poo out of itself.

Has anyone noticed Empire minors building heavy cav? In all my games, I don't think I've ever seen even Empire Knights. Honestly, halberdiers are extremely scarce. Outriders yes, cannons rarely, but no elite cavalry. I think some combination of small provinces, ai building algorithms favoring foundries, and unwillingness to replace units means that only a very successful AI will have the infrastructure to recruit knights, and once they can, they already have their armies full of equally "elite" units (outriders, mortars, handgunners).

Of course, maybe I've just had bad luck. What are other people's experiences?

madmac
Jun 22, 2010
I've seen Empire factions (Including Tilea/Estalia) building large amounts of heavy cav, but only later in the game assuming they've managed to secure their position somewhat. Like any other faction they will spam elite units assuming the infrastructure is there.

When conquering Empire settlements I see them building a lot of stables even in minor provinces. This is probably the real reason they like using Outriders so much, since they don't require an armory to unlock. Of course, the "smart" thing to do would be to drop in Reiksforts instead, but I don't know that I've seen the AI doing that.

Oh, I'd say most AI armies will be composed of low tier units during 90% of the game, it is only when an AI faction manages to consolidate into the midgame that they pull of stronger units. Which will often not happen at all, specially for Empire factions getting clobbered by Norscans and Chaos.

I am being very lucky that both Middenland and Wissenland have survived nicely into six provinces in my Legendary Vlad game (which is probably the same as an Easy Kemmler game, goddamn, is this guy overpowered), so I think I'll have something other than the Chaos doomstacks to use my high tier units on.

Yuk's Beastmen vs Trujillo's Vampire Counts. Yukitsu brought an interesting BM army which had the ability yo hack down infantry very quickly. He effectively used his cheaper spear ungors to keep the heavy cavalry off his back while his Gors set to work hacking down all the VC front line. Trujillo could haver made better use of his Blood Knight if he managed to slip past the spearmen early on and get some rear charges on those Gors, but Yukitsu had a good numbers advantage letting him control movement.

Trujillo's BM vs Yuk's VC: Yukitsu took down the expensive Bestigor flank of Tujillo's army early on with a surprise crypt horror summon combined with aerial charges from his ghoul king, and it didn't get any better for him from there. The different types of stuff in Yuk's army (crypt horros, skeleton spearmen) made it hard fore him to get his Bestigors to be able to focus on the Grave Guard where they might have done well. We saw in the previous match that the uniformity of Yukitsu's own BM composition meant there weren't as many keystone units that could be assassinated. Also surprised he didn't bring any Gorebulls, so he certainly scores non-redeemable points for variety.

I hope they give the Dwarfs some more love. I would love to see an Ironbreaker (Drakefire Pistol) variant where they ditch their shield in favour of fire damage pistols. They would be a seriously beefed up Empire Free Company Militia. Master Engineer heroes should get cooler unlocks too, like gadgets and vehicles/artillery. I swear in an old stream/videos CA had said they could get artillery mounts, but I guess it never made it in. They could get a Gyrocopter/bomber as a mount. Perhaps different weapons instead of mounts too, Drakefire Pistols, Trollhammer Torpedo, Flamethrowers, Satchel Charges etc. I suspect we will eventually see the Anvil of Doom with Thorek, or at least I hope so. It would be nice to see Runelords as lords with the Anvil as a mount option as well. Thanes are quite possibly the most vanilla Heroes in the game next to Empire Captains, though I'm not sure what to do with them. Army wide buffs ala the Gorebull would be a nice start (really the Gorebull has just ruined every other Hero).

What other cool poo poo could the stunties get/whats missing? I love the little dudes.
