I understand that, but the way he phrases it is strikingly similar to the apocryphal story of the introduction steel helmets in ww1 leading to an increase of head wounds which lead to the British government consider recalling them. The increase of course was due to more people not dying immediately when shot in the head.

I didn't know there was any helmet that stopped the brain from sloshing around in the fluid inside of your skull.

Theoretically if you made it big enough and the padding just squishy enough, you could slow the deceleration and prevent that. Also, it would be hilarious to watch football games played in real life big head mode.

Baseball started using larger helmets to help with head injuries, but players hated them because they were ugly as hell, and obviously huge. Barely anyone uses them, and only if they just suffered from a head injury.

It does, sort of. USAR classifies groups by age and at the younger levels kids who are 2x as big as their peers get pushed up into a higher division. I'm a ref (but normally avoid doing kids' matches where the rules are different because no contest scrums and rucks are boring) and we got some info about this but I don't remember the exact brackets.

GrandpaPants posted:

So uh, do they not require kids to wear helmets in rugby? Is this just the American in me to think that that seems like a bad idea?
No, it's goddamn rugby, you don't wear hard plastic anything (except the cleats on your boots). You see some of the kids wearing scrum caps and those are fine, but they're just soft padding to reduce the chance of concussion. Rugby has a way lower rate of concussion because you're not taught to lead a tackle with your skull.

Clearly Apple didn’t think its censorship techniques through all the way. Try searching “tits” or “dick,” for instance, and you’ll get nothing, so it’s safe to assume Apple decided just to block those entirely. “Butt,” however, appears to have made it through. And since Apple is probably pulling from GIF storehouses like Giphy, whatever those storehouses let through, Apple lets through. Which means Apple just sent a cartoon pony vagina to millions of phones nationwide.

Hmm yes a lot of cool and good ownage on me in this thread because I dissed a sport that makes people shoot themselves in the heart later in life because they know their brain is broken and want to donate it to science.

American football is a great sport to watch but you have to realise the damage it does to players who get it into their heads that because they're wearing protective gear they're indestructible, and the culture of the NFL that encourages them to destroy their bodies for the spectacle of the sport. The rampant performance enhancing drug use doesn't help.

It's like how boxing gloves contribute to CTE. You're constantly getting hit very hard by something sort of padded and since one guy doesn't break his hand/the other guy doesn't get cut to ribbons, the fight goes on. Obviously you're still getting punched in the head but the fights would be over sooner without gloves.

Boxing also has various rules planned to maximize getting punched, such as resetting the fight on knock downs, and the ref separating clinching fighters.

Artificial difficulty.
Having the 3-knockdown TKO rule also helps when you aren't just forcing someone with brain damage up again over and over to get hit again with no way of defending himself until he basically got knocked unconscious or beat to death. Also round limits and not fighting in broad daylight and getting heat strokes.

People loving die all the time during boxing matches after boxing gloves, and all boxing gloves aren't created equal: at this point in heavyweight bouts they weigh 10 ounces and the boxers are allowed to have their hands wrapped with 18 feet of bandage and 10 feet of zinc-oxide tape. It's not certain that bareknuckle would be safer but it's pretty plausible:
