My runner up is the Tim Winsky classic "El Legendo de Smelda: Macarena of Time". Also if you've never played any of Cliff Blezinski's earliest work you really should because it's much better than his later stuff. The level is divided up into a binary tree: each location in the tree is a "node" which represents a particular area of the level (with the root node representing the entire level). At each branch of the tree there is a dividing line which divides the area of the node into two subnodes. At the same time, the dividing line divides linedefs into line segments called "segs".[6]

Knee Deep in the Dead is better than Doom 2 by a lot. Also I'mma reframe my statement: I don't think you can name a better game than Super Metroid. Equally good, yes, but not better.

It's hard to ignore the impact Doom and Doom II had. I mean, to me personally, it was mindblowing. I had never seen any other FPS before, like wolfenstein or whatever. Doom was the big new poo poo on the scene What's a modern equivalent of Doom in terms of genre impact? Half-Life and Halo caused real ruckuses but they're hardly modern anymore

I would argue that CoD has completely changed modern FPSs, not that its a particularly great series, but everyone has copied poo poo from CoD and its hard to find good arena FPSs like Quake or Unreal now.

Tetris literally cannot be made better. All the frontrunners like Witcher 3, Earthbound, Doom and so on have well regarded expansions, remakes, patches, people crying out for sequels and more content, people making mods, and so on. But by definition the best video game cannot be improved upon. Every attempt to improve Tetris has failed spectacularly, because it was born perfect. All we can do is to continue to reimplement. Tetris is also the only game that is clinically proven to cure a psychological illness, PTSD. Many of the games listed here actually cause them or make them worse. Add the fact that it's in the Smithsonian and MoMA, winner of countless best games ever awards, and sold the most of any game ever, 495 million copies, 5 times more than the next game, and, well, its not really a debate.
