It's.. just reached 'thin enough' territory for me. I had a 13" air before this 15" rMBP, and I loved both. It's subjective, I know.

It just kind of sucks since I bought into their ecosystem in the 2000's, like a lot of geeks, because it was functional UNIX that 'just works' instead of fiddling with your Linux install all day, and little niceties in design. It reminded me of a luxury car company -- yes, you pay through the nose for the branding and logos, but in return you got amazing customer service, real hardware design effort, and a sense that the company 'cared' in decisions to reject stuff like pack-in OEM bloatware and other gently caress the user decisions.

Now it feels like they are looking for ways to take advantage of me to sell dongles or headphones or cloud storage. I think what I really want is OS X on agnostic hardware.

No, I hear that. I've never really had a use for it, since I just plug my iPhone into a dock with a line-out at work or use the aTV at home on the stereo for music. I also have BT bone conducting phones for when I do want audio at work.

And honestly thinking about it, how much slimmer can they get? I think at this point the rMBP is limited by the fan and venting assembly. I'd love to see them try to passively cool a 4 core i7 with a discreet GPU.

I think you're right that Apple may be moving into reducing manufacturing costs by unifying/eliminating disparate ports. I'm not quite as cynical to see it as a "cash-grab" since everyone I know usually buys 3rd party for a fraction of the cost for those kinds of things.

Missing them already. I've got a mouse and a soundcard plugged in currently. If I want to charge my phone off my laptop, I'd have to unplug one of the two. To keep the same experience I'd have to spend money on a hub, or a new mouse with bluetooth.

There are some great USB-C hubs that make plugging all your poo poo in as simple as plugging in one cable and it's actually Real Good. More of the line using USB-C only will only help make said docks even better.

I imagine pro-audio gear would use it as a TB3 port. My understanding is Apple will be using the ports for both USB3.1 and TB3 (but obviously not currently on the MacBooks with USB C).

I don't mean professional audio interfaces, that's no problem. I mean using just a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter to connect a headphone directly to the laptop.

The 3.5 jack on MBPs is actually good because it doubles as a toslink and I use that all the time. You're drat right I'd be pissed if that's gone. I care more about that than the headphone jack on the iPhone.

I dunno, I don't see them removing too many ports on the MBP. It's easy to tell the guy who wants a superslim laptop for work to get a MB and upgrade the few peripherals they use to USB-C (or get a dongle.) It's much harder telling the pro creative guy to buy all new equipment that supports USB-C or buy a bunch of dongles in order to use their stuff with their new pro machine.

Why do you need an old and slow TOSlink when you have a dock with HDMI?

This terrifies me. Is there any truth to this? Is it only for certain models? For the record mine are both 8,2s.

Because my non-video audio equipment doesn't use HDMI. It's also an optical input. It's handy to not need yet another breakout box.

The only thing white people deserve is a bullet to their empty skull
People should probably stop preemptively freaking out over articles that are just taking advantage of the current overblown iPhone headphone jack feeding frenzy to stir up some more click bait. Apple has been picking MacBook users at random to survey about what features they use (and how satisfied they are with them) for a long time. I filled one out ages ago when they contacted me shortly after I bought a 2011 Air and I told them I didn't ever use the headphone jack, did use USB and the SD card reader, and was interested in using thunderbolt but didn't have anything to plug in yet. Blame me if they take the 3.5mm away I guess?

Seriously though, unless something has changed in a big way with these surveys they ask you about all the features. This includes the headphone jack because that is a thing which Macs have. It is not a new topic for them to ask about.

Also the leaked late 2016 rMBP upper case photos have 4 USB-C ports plus one round opening which is almost certainly a 3.5mm jack so this is really a tempest in a teapot.

:argh:And it looks like they took away my SD reader.:argh:

The graphics card in my 2009 27'' iMac went out (IIRC the Radeon HD 4850), so now the computer only starts up in single user mode or with extensions off and then works like poo poo. The computer ran like a furnace whenever it was on for the past 5 years, so I'm surprised it lasted this long and I'm glad to have replaced it, but I was wondering: is it possible to fix this issue? The Apple store doesn't work on computers over 5 years old, and the second hand retailer here, and I quote "the repair would have costed ca. [$617] to CHF [$823]". What the hell. The computer's not even worth that much in good working order.

Anyway, is it possible to get a replacement or alternative card for this? I look online and I see the ones that say they're for the iMac are all hilariously expensive (e.g. $328 on Amazon; I've seen them a few other places in the same 300-350 range which is insane) since the computer is only worth, max, $500. $328 + S&H to Europe + the suction cup things + my time is really not worth it and I'll just chuck it into the closest river. There's no way I'm investing $400 and several hours of my time into fixing a computer that's only worth $500 when it's new (and anyway I'm not 100% sure it's the graphics card). So, any ideas for alternatives?

That's the only thing missing from the MacBook that bugs me. When I'm out and about I don't want things hanging off my laptop, when I'm home having everything on a high speed connector is perfect. But for moving photos from a camera, the SD slot is useful as hell compared to cabling up to the camera or having an external reader handy.

Cook appears to be certain that these people are no longer required and/or should just design, develop and compile their apps on an iPhone running Xcode in the near future. I think he's wrong.

Unless it's a Seagate. We're all allowed to have our 'never buy again' brands, and holy hell for me is that Seagate. Think I'm up to 4 drives from completely different purchases that just died out of nowhere while all my WD ones next to them keep running smoothly.
