Darko posted:Braveheart and Legends of the Fall have excellent scores. Horner had a nice little run in the 90s right up until around A Beautiful Mind, where he just gave up and repeated himself over and over completely. I always felt some of his strongest work was in animated features. His work for Don Bluth in particular was really good.

It's funny listening to music that was clearly inspired by John Carpenter and then being able to fit in his new music right alongside it. I was shuffling my favorites playlist on Spotify last weekend and by chance it went: Mogwai - Remurdered -> John Carpenter - Vortex -> Dance With The Dead - Nightdrive It was perfect. And it took me way too long to realize John Carpenter's theme for Assault On Precinct 13 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGME6jCwqw0) was sampled in Bomb The Bass - Megablast (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgjNb-6EOYw) which was turned into a theme for the game Xenon 2 (which is how I originally knew it) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2w-tiRnac2k Edit: Added links for the first trio of songs mentioned. What a guy, hella underrated director. Also, watch his music video for Big Trouble in Little China, super cheesy but I love it.

On the topic of Williams, here's an alternate, expanded arrangement of The Jedi Steps from TFA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZFkktFqi4M I really dig it on the reasoning that it's simply more of the best track of the whole film, and that it sees itself to a slow and satisfying conclusion rather than being preempted by a rushed-sounding rendition of the Force theme (as so happened in the film version).

# ? Aug 8, 2016 05:58 |

I couldn't get into TFA at all. It had maybe two scenes I enjoyed overall. The score itself was boring and I was kind of shocked that JJ Abrams somehow managed to make a John Williams score no fun.

# ? Aug 8, 2016 12:14 |

Regardless of the movie's endlessly debatable quality, I'd definitely rank TFA's score down with AOTC's for the reason that both are fairly mediocre scores boosted up by strong motifs (Rey's Theme and the aftermentioned Jedi Steps for the former, Across the Stars for the latter) and the occasional fun action cue (The Falcon and The Chase Through Coruscant, respectively and among others). Also, both have moments tracked from other films, replacing existing cues to varying effect. Still, I hope that Williams returns for VIII, or at the very least, whoever replaces him as composer (because let's face it, the dude's getting old) retains the leitmotifs from TFA because that sense of musical continuity is key to that Star Wars feel.

Here's an approximation of the original theme: Here's an approximation of the natural minor version you posted: Here's an approximation of the way I would prefer, in melodic minor with the leading tone (also a Picardy third at the end just to be fun): CRAP I missed changing a chord in this one. Oh well. Writing it out did make me realize that my version is still not identical to the original melody, because the 3rd is still flat as it would be in the minor scale.

Looks like Star Wars: Rogue One has replaced its composer: Alexandre Desplat is out and Michael Giacchino is replacing him. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/star-wars-rogue-one-replaces-929387 I'm sure Giacchino will do a really good job, but I wonder if he's going to be bringing something that's closer to John Williams' work than Desplat would have.

Pirate Jet posted:Man, that movie is having some problems, huh? Well, the composer change is because of the "problems", not a new one. They did the reshoots, which pushed back the editing timeframe, and thus the scoring timeframe. Desplat already had something else lined up after, and now it would effect that project.

Dan Golding did a response video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcXsH88XlKM I'm not convinced the Star Wars theme is particularly derivative. But he makes some interesting arguments about temp music -- that (a) today filmmakers use temp music from samey movie soundtrack tunes rather than more original non-movie tracks from Holst or Rachmaninov or whatever, and that (b) composition software better simulates brass and percussion so we get more of that instead of woodwinds and strings. The thesis then is: Marvel's music is forgettable because each film's music differs through "texture" not melody (not sure what this means). His argument is that we might be able to accept this as its kind of originality. It's a really interesting debate, to say the least.

Alien used Temp music, and the temp music is still in the actual movie and pissed Goldsmith off something fierce. It's not a trend. It's just how things work. You have figure out if the film works, and it's hard to really grasp that without some kind of music behind it. Other wise you're looking at very, very boring footage. But I don't like this whole series of videos that pop up and I think I figured out why. If you asked me to hum The Avengers theme, I could do it. Why? Because I enjoy listening to film scores. It's something that works for me. Most people really don't listen to them outside of something really big like Star Wars or Pirates of the Caribbean. No matter what, it will be background noise to them. But they could probably hum a popular song at the moment without an issue. They can hum Can't Stop The Feeling and I can hum the main theme from the new Ghostbusters movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1Jsuhzh948&t=104s Because I care about film music and I love listening to it.

You're this dude: Just kidding. But more seriously: He's obviously using a very simplistic test for whether a score is memorable. But most moviegoers know a good soundtrack when they hear one. You probably don't need to remember the melodies at all to know Carol and The Hateful Eight had some cool tunes.

Actually, kidding or not, I KNOW no one would know The Avengers theme and I don't blame them for it. The theme's barely in the movie, and has like almost zero outside exposure. The biggest issue with Marvel scores isn't really so much they're bland, it's that they don't have a through-line with their music. Captain America has 3-4 themes right now. Iron Man has almost 5. Thor has 2, Hulk has 3? Black Widow has like 2 or so? And they keep changing it. Repeating the score is all you need. Like I'm sure a decent amount of people can at least hum the new Star Trek theme, right? It's been used for three flicks so far.
