This one's a two-parter On April 8, 2000, Mark Hogancamp was severely assaulted by some guys outside a bar. He spent 9 days in a coma, and when he eventually came out of it, had few memories past 1984. His body was horribly wrecked, and suffered major brain damage from the attack. Unable to afford therapy, he was basically on his own to get better. With no retained knowledge or experience, and no desire to go back out into the real world, he started building his own little town that he could live in and control in 1/6th scale. He called it Marwencol, a portmanteu of "Mark," "Wendy" and "Colleen"; himself, and two friends. Human interaction was still incredibly intense for him, so rather than having typical social relations, he'd make characters of the people he met, and have them "live" in Marwencol. Marwencol was sort of based on a Belgian town in World War II. At this point, the only people who knew about it were his neighbors and the people at the town hobby shop who sold him paints and figures. As it turns out, he was incredibly gifted at modeling, posing, and photographing, and started taking pictures like this: and this and this One day, someone in town saw him pushing that model jeep down the road with a stick and asked him what the deal was. (Pushing it makes the rubber tires wear more realistically). They started talking, and Mark showed him the stack of pictures from Marwencol. He was stunned, and started showing the pictures to friends who convinced him that the pictures needed to be shown on a grander scale. The movie, Marwencol came out in 2010, and Mark's book, Welcome to Marwencol was published last year. Reportedly, Robert Zemeckis is working on a narrative documentary as well. An amusing follow-up, last year when Bruce Jenner became Caitlin Jenner, this is something you probably saw posted on facebook by your weird uncle: ... which is interesting because it's not actually a picture of two people, but of two 1/6 figures modeled, posed, and photographed by Mark Hogancamp. Also interesting because when Mark was attacked outside of that bar in 2000, it was because he had let slip to one of the men that he liked to wear women's clothes sometimes. This apparently threw them into a rage. I happen to live sorta in the same area where all of this happened, and where Mark still resides. He has a display in the front of the local hobby store that he updates regularly, which is always amazing to see. The local doll company, Tonner, set up a drive to get more figures and supplies to him. You see him around town, but you just give a nod because human interaction is still something he's working on. When they did a screening of the documentary a few years back, he made an un-announced appearance and answered questions. Completely unexpected, everyone knew that he probably wouldn't be there, and when he did show up, everyone was very polite and respectful. I think that has helped him be a little more comfortable. I thought folks might enjoy this even though it's not one of those "Oh yeah, I entirely forgot that happened", and more of a "This sounds like a far-fetched movie" type of thing. There's great articles all over the place, though this one gets a lot of the important character and detail. an AOL chatroom has a new favorite as of 19:15 on Sep 16, 2016 |

The search for the Titanic was actually a government funded cover for the search of missing attack submarines. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wreck_of_the_RMS_Titanic quote:The Navy commissioned Ballard and his team to carry out a month-long expedition every year for four years, to keep Argo / Jason in good working condition.[28] It agreed to Ballard's proposal to use some of the time to search for Titanic once the Navy's objectives had been met; the search would provide an ideal opportunity to test Argo / Jason. In 1984 the Navy sent Ballard and Argo to map the wrecks of the sunken nuclear submarines USS Thresher and USS Scorpion, lost in the North Atlantic at depths of up to 9,800 feet (3,000 m).[29] The expedition found the submarines and made an important discovery. As Thresher and Scorpion sank, debris spilled out from them across a wide area of the seabed and was sorted by the currents, so that light debris drifted furthest away from the site of the sinking. This "debris field" was far larger than the wrecks themselves. By following the comet-like trail of debris, the main pieces of wreckage could be found
