And personally, I think killing him off works in that it removes anything close to a role model for Akito from the series, leaving him basically adrift until he finally figures things out himself during the last episode. (Akatsuki attempts to take that mantle up but is either terrible at it or doing a half-assed job of it on purpose.)

Agreed! But again, I do concede that the death doesn't work nearly as well in SRW as it does in the show (or in the backstory of an SRW), especially considering they don't even consistently attempt to depict the same death.

How he dies in the show, for those who don't know but don't want to watch: After his first sortie, Jiro "Gai Daigohji" Yamada (Gai being his soul's name) goes to the hangar to put some Gekiganger stickers on his robot to mark his kills. He hears a sound, it's a random bad guy wandering the hangar for an unrelated sabotage, and then the bad guy unceremoniously shoots him without so much as a scream. Gai dies alone and nobody on the ship besides Akito is even moved by it.

Screw it; The Strongest Card ~ King of Hearts isn't doing it for me.

Starting next update, I'll be alternating these for the G Gundam units:

My favorite version since I'm not too keen on Impact's Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire-esque brass.

Came down to this or SRW 64's version but, in the end, I preferred this one's more rocking feel since it was closer to the original.

I've always had a soft spot for the Playstation F/F Final version, the crescendos are especially bombastic in that version, really gets you pumped, even though it's noticeably more MIDI-fied. F Final also has the best-for-its-purpose version of Ode to Joy in the Bad Ending, the channels kind of blend together, with the same/similar levels of loudness, lending it an even more chaotic, even oppressive, feel, like something out of Clockwork Orange, which fits the situation perfectly, in a way a more "faithful" rendition doesn't manage.

Darkest SRW recipe: Fafner Exodus, Mazinger Zero, Getter Robo Armageddon, Evangelion 3.33, and Muv Luv Alternative. Maybe add some Godannar too, and make the Memetic Beasts BETA creations. Possibly include Turn A Gundam, Zegapain, the Big O and Linebarrels of Iron for extra post-post apocalypse flavour.

...Somewhat of a tangent, but how the hell does Z3 handle Rebuild 3.33, anyway? TVTropes has been kind of vague on the issue, and the events of that movie are so cataclysmic, and leave so much hanging for 4 (still hoping we get 4...) that it seems like a nightmarishly difficult thing to include in a SRW game with any degree of elegance.

Short answer is: it doesn't. Shinji does his thing and everything Evangelion-related gets blooped out of the multi-dimensional world. Later on, they come back in their flashy new EVAs but no plot happens; when the game ends, the kids are in their world again and go back to NERV/Wille.

Edit: Oh, and if this beckons an Evangelion 3.33-centric discussion, every please be careful to not spoil anything related to future MX events, yes?

Instead of almost causing another apocalypse at the end of the film, Shinji accidentally opens a hole to the Z3.2verse and all the Evas go through.

So they basically just skipped the whole thing. We don't even get the Wunder.

A quick reminder that 3.0 is going to be in V, but without any plot. I don't think Banpresto's going to even try until 4.0 is released they know where the creator is actually going with this poo poo, since 3.0 goes off the rails from the shows in a convoluted and completely batshit way you have to build around.

Was Linebarrels actually finished, though? Because SRW obviously isn't scared to give a series a new ending to make it fit the setting or theming of the game better, but I don't know if it's ever taken a completely unfinished thing like Rebuild of Evangelion and given it an actual ending before the actual writer did.

Aside from Linebarrels, Evangelion TV had not finished its broadcast run by the time SRW F came out, resulting in a slightly different ending.

And then there's NEO, which managed to cobble together enough material to make the canceled fourth Eldoran show, Daiteioh, into a playable unit complete with its own upgraded form.

This is actually untrue, SRW F came out in September of 1997, while Evangelion ended in March of 1996. Any alterations were likely early attempts by Banpresto to rehabilitate NGE, an art they'd perfect by the time of the Alpha games.

MX is a whole lot more limited in its Skill Choices as Banpresto was still experimenting with the system. I usually just follow a standard priority for everyoneeeee:

Offensive units: Hit & Away if your unit lacks stopping power in post-movement attacks > SP Regen > Attacker > E-Save if your guy chugs too much EN; if not, take Infight/Gunfight at least up to L7 (depending on whether it focuses on melee or ranged). After that, get whatever else you can, as you'll probably be in the endgame.

Support Units: SP Regen, Concentration if its caster support like Hikaru, Attacker if its an offensive support like Vega. Support Attack can help squeeze some added damage for offensive support, Concentration can help you squeeze more spells without having to wait for regen.

Ships: Hit & Away, Guard/SP Regen/Attacker/E-Save are all good afterwards.

Vega I know is offense support because I attached a minovsky craft to it so it's a flying bike.

Does Michiru and Boss count as Offense Support? Boss has the spirit command to take 10 damage.

Michiru can be both. Unlike Z1, she has her combined attacks to pull some damage (her offensive stats are crap, mind).

Boss is Boss. He wants to be an offensive guy but his unit and stats can't back that up. If you wanna field him as such, put him in a better unit to compensate a bit or throw a ton of money at the Borot.

Location: Hundred Demons’ Island Fortress

We find Brai, emperor of the Hundred Demon Empire, exhorting the troops that they are the only ones fit to rule the Earth. Of course, the place is still filled with those worthless humans but the leader of his troops, Marshal Hidler, says they’re no threat whatsoever.
Brai likes hearing that, commanding Hidler to convert every single human into a demon like them – then, the world shall belong to him.

But that’s not their entire plan of worldly conquest, so Brai turns to his chief scientist, Gura, for details. Gura relates the chaotic state of the entire Earth Sphere, beset by battles of not only humans but also space invaders and more. Gura suggests they leverage the situation to conquer the whole thing… but there’s a problem.
Namely, their island fortress needs more energy. It can operate just fine right now but waging an offensive against the world isn’t something so mundane. They’ll need more forces than just this mighty base and while Gura already has plans to produce large amounts of units and weapons, that’ll require a tremendous amount of energy.

How do they solve this problem, then? By getting their hands on the Getter Ray Amplifier that one Prof. Saotome’s recently developed. By improving and mass producing the thing, they’ll have all the energy they’ll ever need to power their island fortress.
Sounds good, so Brai commands Hidler to grab some Hundred Demon Robots and capture the Saotome Laboratory. Let that be the first blow of the conquest!
HAIL BRAAAAIIII!

Location: Tekkoryu Fortress

Saiga’s approached the empress, suggesting that the Tekkoryu should also take measures against other potential threats than just the Zeorymer. He figures she’s already been informed of the Nahel Argama team, the ones who showed up in the aftermath of the Lanster’s defeat.
Indeed, she’s aware of this squadron comprised of several unique robots but Yura asks how Saiga takes them as a threat to their plans. “Maybe not yet but someday… And that’s saying nothing of the fact that, like the other robots, the Zeorymer could also be taken into the group,” he explains.
So, he figures it best to nip this problem at the bud in the interest of fulfilling the empress’ plans; fair enough, Yura decides to send Si Aen and Si Tau to dispatch them. Saiga is silently pleased: it’s best to eliminate any potential threats for HIM, as well. And that applies to the other Hakkeshu as well.

Location: Last Guardian’s Base

Oki isn’t done traumatizing Masato yet, showing him a clip of a test tube. Or, rather, of Masato as an embryo, growning inside that test tube. What the hell? It’s true. Masato’s a man-made human, unique in all the world and cultivated with a specific purpose in mind: pilot the Zeorymer
Masato is stunned, whimpering that he’s lying, but Oki say it’s all fact. Is that why they commanded him to use the Zeorymer to fight the Haudragon? “Correct. It’s your fate,” Oki says matter-of-factly.

: (I’m… a human designed to pilot the Zeorymer… Same as that girl, Miku Hirumo…)
: (But even as a test-tube baby… they’d still need to obtain the sperm and egg from someone. If it was the same man and woman… would that make Miku my sister…?)
: Masato.
: …
: Did Mr. Oki brief you about the Tekkoryu – the Haudragon?
: He did; an army of robots bent on world domination, right? That’s great but it’s not my problem to deal with.
: Hahahah…
: What’s so funny?
: You will pilot the Zeorymer and fight them. It's your destiny.
: How can you be so nonchalant about this?!
: …
: We were made only to pilot that robot… How can you accept that?!
: Humans are meant for… you know… more!
: Do you think so? I believe all humans have a predetermined path in life.
: !
: And ours is with the Zeorymer, Masato.
: …

*ALARM!*

: ?!

The kids run back to the command room, where Oki reports that some unknown troops are attacking the Saotome Laboratory; furthermore, intel just came in that two Hakke Robots are also headed that way.
Miku’s surprised to hear that the Hakkeshu aren’t focusing on Last Guardian but Oki has no idea what they’re up to. The Federation Army’s currently engaging them but it’s only a matter of time before both break their lines; the Nahel Argama’s already been dispatched to the Saotome Lab but Oki also wants the Zeorymer to head there.
Miku is wary but Oki says that the Hakkeshu’s involvement demands they launch; she accepts and pulls Masato to the hangar. “Do I really have no choice but to pilot that thing…?” he mulls.

Mission 12 – Burning Water, Frigid Flame

Saotome does not recognize his attackers, obviously not Mechasaurus. Hidler gets on the mic and introduces himself as Field Marshal of the Hundred Demon Empire. The ones who’ll supplant the foolish humans are rulers of Earth!
They are the apex life in this world, so it is only natural that it all belong to them; and they’ll remake every human into demons along the way! Saotome stands baffled but, regardless, the demons’ plan starts here: Hidler sends his troops over to stomp the lab and take Saotome’s Getter Ray Amplifier.

Or not; the Nahel Argama arrives and blocks their path. Saotome confirms to Michiru that he’s fine and tells of what the attackers are after. Hayato muses that, if they’re seeking the Getter Ray AMPLIFIER, then their the exact opposite of the Dinosaur Empire who sought to destroy anything related to Getter Rays.
Seems to Ryouma that this gang wants to actually use the energy to fuel their world domination, prompting Hidler to once again harp of how they’re the most suited to rule. “Well, at least these guys are pretty straightforward,” Asuka quips. “True, true. None of that ‘new world order’ or ‘revolutionize mankind’ song and dance,” Light adds.
Still doesn’t mean we’re just going to let them do their thing, of course. So off go our troops to keep their hands away from the lab.

Mission Objective: Destroy all enemies
Mission Failure: Nahel Argama destroyed or any enemy unit reaches the Saotome Lab
Simple, so long as you form a decent defensive line. The frontline Horned Demons will make a beeline for the lab, not even attacking if no one’s in range after they move, so field speedy units to run them down.
It’s a long way for them to reach the lab so you’ll be fine… unless you really screw up.

Of course, I’ve no problems with this whatsoever as Domon has a Haro and can move twice as far as the demons.

They’re made of sturdier stuff than most but your protagonists should be capable of twoshotting them.

Everyone else closes in.

Enemy Phase!

So do the Horned Demons, Domon’s quarry dying when he attacks. Hidler and the rest stand by.

Player Phase!

And we might as well take a quick gander at Hidler:

Mecha Fortress Demon (Field Marshal Hidler)
Pilot Skills:
  • Unyielding Spirit
  • Support Attack L1
Hidler’s Voice Actor: Kenichi Ogata (other known works: Leo Shishioh in Gaogaigar, Dangel in Combattler V, Great General of Darkness in Great Mazinger and many others)

Well, he’s a lot weaker than he was in Z. This Skill List is positively ridiculous, especially when you consider Balendos has Prevail; as is, Hidler relies solely on his ship to stay alive and, while it is decently powerful and bulky, it’s not enough.
If anything, he has decent enough stats but that’s only a problem if you let him get a clean hit in.

Domon cuts another demon to size and in goes Rei.

Gone.

One thing that can give the Horned Demons more longevity are the forest around which’ll boost their defenses. It’ll also slow their advance, however.

Hugo giving an assist, Kouji moves in.

But it’s not quite enough. Puru Two is nearby to wrap that up, though.

As Domon zips far away to hurt a fresh demon, Ginga gets to work on the closest one.

Easy pickings for Akira.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fs_JGAZgWWw
Also, watch as Akira Kamiya goes crazy for what is, essentially, his vulcan.

Might as well send our remaining guys to start dealing with Hidler.

: Rrrgh! This fly won't sit still!
: Heh! How good are you at tag, Mr. Demon? You're it!

… Or the plot can kick in as soon as I start.

: Ah! Those are…!
: Hakke Robots, I think!
: Hmph. There are others beside us targeting the Saotome Laboratory?
: So that’s the Nahel Argama squad…
: Plus some other unknown group, it seems. Tau, they are—
: Spare me the step-by-step, I know. Our orders are to destroy the Nahel Argama, so we’ll ignore the others, right?
: … Right, yes.
: Then we are ready. Let all here behold the Si Sisters, masters of flame and water…
: To battle!
: Ignore them! Capture the laboratory ASAP!

Not like the sisters are close enough to attack any of the demons but whatever. We’ll deal with the in a bit but, before that, Hidler needs to go.

: We’ll end the lot of you and, then, this world will belong to the Hundred Demons!
: I don’t think so! It’s you folks who’ll get a crushed by us!
: What he said. The lizards are saving you a spot in Hell.
: Hah! You’d best not bunch us with the likes of those geckos!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MbYmhG557g

: Demon or whatever you are, all I see is another bad guy pulling the same crap as the others!
: Silence, boy! I will not allow a worm like you to bungle the first step in our conquest of the world!

: I always thought demons only showed up in fairy tales but…
: Come on, weirdo! We’re gonna drop a ton of salt over your head!
: You brats dare mock the Hundred Demons?!

: Mutropolis’ Raideen, eh? We’ll also claim your Mutron in time!
: These guys are after super energies?!

I gave Raideen a Jammer :v:

: Urk! I should retreat for now and revise our strategy…!

Yeah, Hidler runs off once he reaches 9.5k HP. I could easily have set up a kill but I was in a hurry when recording and didn’t do it.
Also, here are the other convos we missed:

: Trying to attack the Saotome Lab while we were all away, huh? You demons are a bunch of chickens!
: Silence, human! You being here or not’ll make absolutely no difference!

--

: Hundred Demon Empire! If you’re here to threaten peace, then we’re ready to fight back!
: Impertinence! A mere human dares challenge us?!

Back to our regular program, Elle weakens the last Horned Demon and Asuka takes it.

So there.

A Spirit cast later and Domon get Hyper Mode going.

That’s just to speed things along, as these Wheel Demons are resilient, at 8500 HP.

Not resilient enough, mind. Also, is it wrong that Domon is like five levels ahead of everyone?

Off go Hugo and Ginga, each picking a demon to whittle down.

This one’s in Tap’s range.

Perfect.

Ryouma finishes Hugo’s, gaining a Prevail level.

Enemy Phase!

Ow.

FYI, Si Aen and Si Tau have been slooooowly heading towards the coast. They’re almost there.

Player Phase!

: Sister, this signal is!
: Can it be… him?!

: …
: Zeorymer…!
: (That’s Prof. Kihara’s…!)
: Curse you, Zeorymer…! Did they detect us and come in pursuit?
: But that’s good. If we can capture it ourselves, the Empress will be delighted.
: Hold, Tau. That very Empress ordered us to, above all, destroy the Nahel Argama and its team. This is not the time for us to engage the Zeorymer.
: What are you babbling about, sister? Reclaiming “Heaven” is the empress’ ultimate desire. We’d be shaming the Hakkeshu name if we let it go now!

*Si Tau steps towards the Zeorymer.*

: Do not run off by your lonesome! Did you forget that we fight together?!
: And what point is there to that when we still cannot perform the “Twin Lords”?!
: Tau!
: Flame and Water are twin Hakke Robots… We, sisters, are burdened with the same fate…! None of that matters! My Gallowin of Water alone is more than capable of defeating him!
: Masato, are you ready? We’ve to stop those two Hakke Robots.
: (Is… Is this really my destiny…?)
: Did you hear me? I’m shifting us into combat mode.
: …
: Masato… If you won’t fight, then why did you board the Zeorymer?
: I’ve no home to return to. This is all I have left… Isn’t that how it is, Miku?
: … Just try and focus on the battle right now. The Hakke Robots are engaging us.
: … Roger.

Gallowin of Water (Si Tau)
Pilot Skills:
  • Prevail L3
  • Support Attack L1
Si Tau’s Voice Actress: Yuko Sasaki (other known works: Sakura in Maruko-Chan, Shenhua in Black Lagoo and a few others)

Briest of Flame (Si Aen)
Pilot Skills:
  • Leadership
  • Prevail L3
  • Support Defense L1
Si Aen’s Voice Actress: Rei Sakuma (other known works: Rahda and Kuro in SRW OGs, Kazumi in Gunbuster, Nina in Gundam 0083 and many others)

See this, Hidler? This is what a midboss should look like. Standard to the Hakkeshu, the twins are both competent pilots with good stats and high-powered robots. The Gallowin and Briest have a lot of HP for this point of the game, too (though they’ll also retreat at 50%).
That being said, Si Aen is clearly the better pilot, having an edge on Tau on pretty much everything. The only thing she has over her is morale gains. Leadership has the potential to be dangerous but, thankfully, Tau broke their formation and the AI isn’t smart enough to get it back.
Masato would be in trouble if he didn’t have Iron Wall. You’ll want to get your people up there ASAP, though.

So, Masato will hold the line and weaken them however he can. His morale is way too lose to abuse the Dimensional Coupling System, too.

: Zeorymer…! I’ll best you myself!
: I-Incoming!
: Settle down… Keep your cool and fight back!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sliEODL29ac
Yeah, it’ll take a while.

The Demons on the northern front are all cleared out, though. Now there are only a few back on Hidler’s front.

A good chance to show off the Unicorn Drill’s File Load, even.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jniTvZkz98

Last one is weakened by Duke and sniped down by Rei.

Next, insert a few turns of me trudging my people over to the sisters.

: These fools are challenging us?!
: Calm yourself, Tau! It’s only by cooperating with one another that we show our full might!
: Do not tell me what to do, sister! I can dispatch the likes of them by myself!
: What… the pilots of these blue and red units are sisters?
: That matters not during battle!
: Yes, it does! Sisters are strong because they help each other – just like me and Puru Two!

: Did they ally themselves with the Hundred Demon Empire?!
: Idiocy… The Tekkoryu are the rightful masters of this world – we’ve no need for allies!
: Tau, please! Teamwork! It’s dangerous to underestimate this foe!
: Hrm… I know that!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BJ-5734kU0
That was a 98% chance to hit, mind. :psyduck:

: I’ve no choice now… engaging!
: Wh-What is you people's problem with me?!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7gW7GLydp0
“Zeorymer… I’ll reduce you to cinders!”

: Urgh…! If only we fought as one, this…!

*Si Aen retreats.*

: This… This is all I amount to by myself…?! No, it can’t be!!

*Also retreats.*

That’s the last of the enemies. When Bright asks, Torres reports that the Zeorymer’s not receiving any transmissions.
Miku calls for them to return to base and off the bot goes, leaving Hokuto to wonder just what kind of people could be piloting it. Misato looks on in silence.

Saotome sees that only his lab was attacked and posits that this means the demons aren’t launching a full-scale invasion YET. Ryouma asks if they’d be massing their forces now and, indeed, that’s what he figures.
Kouji adds two plus two and wonders if they were after the Getter Ray Amplifier to power the creation of more units; yes but Saotome doubts they’ll limit themselves to just this source of energy. Photon, Mutron, Light Quantum, Daimolight and even that robot from Last Guardian are all likely to be targeted… Having three robots powered by those in our team, the Nahel Argama’s now quite the prize for the demons.
Saotome will get in touch with the Federation and request some extra protection for the lab, so he wants us to worry about ourselves. Misato is about to leave but Ryouma asks her to go on without them – there’s one last thing they’ve to do.

That is, visit Musashi’s grave and tell of the new trouble brewing. That said, Hayato and Benkei tell him to rest easy – they’ll protect peace on Earth in his stead.
They probably won’t be returning to the lab for a while but they’ll always bear his spirit within their hearts; so, Ryouma asks him to wait for them.

Back to the Hundred Demons’ Island, Brai isn’t surprised that the Getter Robo’s proven to be a hindrance. Hidler begs forgiveness but the Emperor will let this failure slide on account of all the good data he brought back.
He turns to Gura and orders him to leverage the energy they’ve currently available and start mass-producing their Demon Robots. The professor says it’ll take a while but that’s fine: in fact, letting the Getter and friends run loose isn’t a bad thing. They’ll eliminate others obstacles to the Demon’s conquest for them, while they focus on building their strength. When the right time comes, they’ll attack in a massive wave.
Meanwhile, they’ll keep on gathering energy whenever the opportunities present themselves.

I noticed that, yeah. Seems like Banpresto figured they might as well go all-in with that design since Toei went there.

And we can't see it because of the portrait cutoff but Brai's always got the finger guns going.

Well, the confusion that came from the Break the World gave them a much easier time taking over Japan. Plus, they actually managed to tap into the Dimensional Power, which is more than most enemies ever did in Z1... looking at it that way, they WERE one of the bigger threats around.

Hard to top that but they might come up with something here (I don't really remember).

Light Quantum Energy is Grendizer's (though, in quantum physics light quantum is just another name for... photon. I dunno why they made it different from Kouji's!). This is actually the first time it's been mentioned in game.

As for the salt, isn't it a common superstition that it can be used to ward off evil spirits and demons?

The Japanese have this festival called Setsubun where they toss soybeans at Oni-costumed folks as a way to do that. Salt seemed like the closest equivalent as it's pretty widespread.

It's technically Photonic Energy but as discovered by an alien civilization. It makes sense that it has a different name.

Yes, this is also a thing they do in Japan, it's been a common belief in many cultures for reasons I'm unsure of. Though, pouring it on an oni's head, that's one I've not heard of.

We open to find the old Mr. Bähbem telling Watari that, after forty years, they’ve managed to make “that” a reality. Are they still in time? Indeed, they’ll be capable of readying the necessary amount… though some will have to use parts of Fossil Beasts they previously captured.
“Fine puppets, those… though, also, pitiful in their incapacity of achieving divinity,” Bähbem muses. Another matter, word has reached Bähbem’s ears of a squad filled to the brim with not only various unique bots but, also, those artificial humans. He and Watari figure NERV’s using said squad to keep their, and the enemies’, eyes focused elsewhere.

Face that, Bähbem posits that maybe they should also send the RahXephon to join their ranks. They’ll likely be able to make better use of it than Watari’s TERRA and, furthermore, if it causes the MU to focus their attention on the squad, it’ll buy them time.
Watari seems ill at ease over the prospect of having the Nahel Argama team play bait for the MU but they have shown themselves capable of dispatching Dotems before, no? That makes them qualified for the role of pied piper, Bähbem figures.

Watari further argues that sending the RahXephon over runs the risk of SEELE gaining intel on the thing. Bähbem says that matters not: “Thanks to the Scrolls, we both have a decent idea of what cards each one holds. Furthermore, not only do I doubt they could comprehend the RahXephon System, it’s also incomplete without two awakened Instrumentalists.”
What if NERV decided to simply destroy the thing? Bähbem doubts Gendou is the kind of man to do that; rather, he’d likely use the RahXephon as a smokescreen for SEELE. Bähbem sent him a modicum of intel precisely to induce him to do so.
Fair enough. Then Watari will handle the RahXephon matter.

Location: Nirai-Kanai

Back at TERRA’s HQ, Haruka’s brought Ayato over. He and Kunugi get in a staring match, prompting Isshiki to sigh that they’re like squabbling children. Regardless, the previous exams came back and results show there’s nothing physically wrong with Ayato.
Ayato still stares at him and Haruka stammers that this is something to be happy about. Granted, he’s just spent all that time locked away in that room, so he’s not in the best of moods; plus, folks kept doing check-ups on him over and over. Do they think people who’ve escaped Tokyo aren’t human or something? Are they expecting his blood to turn blue as well? Dot, dot, dot.
As no one answers, Kunugi cuts in to say that they’ve assigned a home for him in Nirai-Kanai and asks Haruka to take him over. When she tries grabbing his arm, Ayato snaps at her not to touch him.

As Haruka balks, this guy offers to do so instead; he introduces himself as Itsuki Kisaragi of the scientific division.
Haruka doesn’t say anything one way or another, so Itsuki takes it as her consenting. With that, he leaves with Ayato.

Along the way, they bump into Sayoko Nanamori, Itsuki’s assistant. He takes the opportunity to hand her a disk with a D1 aria recorded, to get to work on while he’s escorting Ayato. When the kid asks, he explains that a “D1 aria” is that song from the MU’s Dolems – the two of them are studying it.
Sayoko’s heard of Ayato and asks how he’s liking Nirai-Kanai. When the kid doesn’t answer, Itsuki breaks the silence with some exposition: Nirai’s the man-made structure built to facilitate the study of some ancient ruins on the proper island, while Kanai’s the above-sea city. Thus, the name.
As for said ruins, they’ve stored the RahXephon within; the place is called Neriya Shrine.

Quon shows up right then, complaining to Itsuki about her annoyance with the resident physician; the doctor insisted she’s in perfect health, but she’s certainly not feeling or she wouldn’t bother getting exams again and again.
Itsuki concurs, taking the opportunity to introduce her to Ayato: Quon’s his sister, and one of TERRA’s workers. Ayato’s a bit taken aback, seeing her again, though Quon’s as friendly as ever.

Itsuki shows Ayato to the house where he'll be staying... "temporarily" most likely. He doesn’t explain, leaving Ayato to introduce himself; he'll come pick him up later. As he goes, a girl steps outside; she seemingly recognizes Ayato, surprised that he’s the one staying with them. Rikudou, the home’s owner, also walks over and tells her to introduce herself.
Megumi Shitou is her name and, yes, Haruka’s her older sister; she lives here as well, by the by. Rikudou figures his more traditional Japanese house is rather different from where Ayato used to live, and it may take some getting used to, but suggests he look at it like he’s visiting some distant relatives… not that Ayato’s ever done that.
Either way, Rikudou asks Meg to show Ayato around the neighborhood. She’s not too keen on that but Rikudou asks “What do I always say?” and she pouts an agreement.

Ayato was a bit surprised that Meg knew who he was right away but she explains that she also works for TERRA. Not Rikudou, however; he was a famous archaeologist back in the day but now he’s retired.
Meg’s a bit curious, so she asks: how’s Tokyo like? It’s just a regular town and she seems a bit disappointed that there isn’t anything crazy going on. You see, Tokyo Jupiter came into being before Meg’s time but Haruka was actually born there before the MU closed it off. She remembers always hearing her say how she’d go back.
The talk’s interrupted when Meg gets paged – looks like she’s on call and TERRA just asked her to come in. Ayato can find the way back by himself, though.

So there goes Ayato again, telling Rikudou what happened. Seems like it’ll fall on the old man to fix dinner for tonight.
Ayato takes the opportunity to ask about the line he used to convince Meg; what is it that he “always tells her”? “Ah, it’s nothing major: ‘never turn away from hardship – always face it head-on’. Hmm… And you’re still young, so I reckon there’ll be plenty in store for you, too,” Rikudou says.

Back in TERRA’s HQ, Souichi is welcoming the director, Watari, back from his trip. The guy actually saw fit to get him some souvenir, handing a batch of Shizuoka’s famous “Photonic Crackers”.
Regardless, he asks him to call Kunugi over and Souichi figures this means an official decision’s been made about Ayato and the RahXephon.

And as these things often go, they are asking/telling him to fight the MU with them. That strikes Ayato as one-sided as all hell but he’s the only one who can make the thing go.
But why does he actually need to fight with the RahXephon when there are already a ton of MSs and Super Robots all available? Kunugi’s sure that Ayato, since coming over, has heard of the myriad crisis that broke out into this world; we’ve yet to extinguish those flames fully and, yet, new problems are STILL rearing their ugly heads.
Ayato’s seen the videos about the invading aliens and whatnot but to Kunugi and the others, these are very real, tangible things that they must deal with.

Ayato’s still not having it and Isshiki sniffs that he’s, after all, still a kid; Itsuki figures his attitude is only natural, considering TERRA’s treated him mostly as a guinea pig. Quon interjects: “The dream from the abyss… Blue eyes illuminate the young boy’s face… That timbre…”
It’s actually a warning, as TERRA’s alarms start sounding: Meg reports D2s on rapid approach towards Nirai-Kanai. Kunugi calls DEFCON 3 and asks if there are any nearby Federation forces.

Another operator, Kim, is pinging the Nahel Argama team on patrol not too far away. Considering the number of D2s incoming, Kunugi has her call for our help.
When Ayato asks about that callsign, Haruka tells Dolems, MU weapons responsible for razing several towns in the brief war fifteen years ago. Uh, oh, are they actually thinking of making him deploy to intercept these things?
Isshiki confirms; why else would they have executed Operation Overlord and brought a kid like him all the way to Nirai Kanai? Ayato yells that he never asked anyone to get him out in the first place but Kim tells him to stop complaining and get in the loving robot.

: I told you, I’m not gonna fight! I wasn’t even piloting that thing because I wanted to!
: But you’re the only one who can, aren’t you?
: That’s your problem, not mine!
: So, what, you’re just going to freeload off us?!
: I can do some normal work just fine!
: Doing what?! What could a brat like you possibly do?!
: …
: Stop it, Kim!
: What do you think you’re good for other than piloting the RahXephon!
: I’m good for plenty!
: No, you’re not!
: You don’t even know anything about me…!
: But I know how the world is like and you don’t! Why the hell did someone like you have to be the pilot?!
: !

Haruka and Itsuki intervene, telling both to chill the hell out; if he could, he’d tell him to sit in a corner but that’s obviously not happening now. Regardless, they will not strong-arm Ayato into piloting but Itsuki asks if he couldn’t just be on standby aboard the RahXephon?
Haruka points out that he doesn’t really have the authority to decide that but Kunugi allows it – they’re calling the Argama team over right now. Ayato doesn’t see that as much of an improvement as they’re obviously still thinking of making him fight; as Kim bristles again, Itsuki tells them that if they don’t behave, he will tell him to sit in a corner… balancing buckets over their heads.
Fine, fine. He only needs to be aboard the RahXephon? Right – he can trust Itsuki.

Mission 13 – Encounter of the Mechanical Gods

The D2s are breaking through TERRA’s defense lines and the Nahel Argama’s still three minutes out. As quietly Ayato sits inside the RahXephon, Itsuki asks if he’s worried about what’s going on outside. He says no.
Ayato asks if this is really all he wants of him and Itsuki confirms – the RahXephon is an important research that he’d rather not risk and, to top it off, Itsuki’s a pacifist. Sayoko figures Ayato will be very mad when he sees how Itsuki’s guiding him by the nose in this. But, hey, Itsuki hasn’t lied at any point – the kid just hasn’t asked the right questions.
Should Sayoko explain what’s what, then? Itsuki is sure she won’t; as grown-ups, they understand that the truth isn’t all it takes to make someone happy.

Elvy’s the only one around to intercept, figuring she can handle D2s just fine without that kid’s help. She’ll do this for her dead comrades, even.
As Ayato recognizes her plane from Tokyo, Meg gets in touch; she figures she ought to explain why Kim acted the way she did. See, fifteen years ago, she and her parents were off on a trip in Australia… right as Dolems started attacking the place. Both her parents were killed in the onslaught and, thus, she swore revenge on Dolems.
This is a talk for later, though, as the Dotems are arriving just now. Off goes Elvy to keep them at bay.

Kill everything, don’t lose Elvy. She could probably take them all on herself anyway.

All we can do is move her forward.

Enemy Phase!

Here they come.

: These puppets have all come from Tokyo Jupiter…?
: Then I’ll end them for all those they killed in Operation Overlord!!

And that’s two down.

Player Phase!

: What’s going on… Some of them aren’t attacking…? Are they waiting for the RahXephon to come out?!
: …!
: The one included in this class, the one who’s just broken the jar…
: …! A D1?!

*Alarm*

: Contact! A D1 and several D2s on rapid approach!
: A Dolem…!
: … I can hear the song…
: The D1’s aria!!
: From the distance, once again, a sound like a banquet… No, she’ll die…!

*The Dolem blindsides Elvy from below*

: What?!
: Ah! Alfa 1’s!
: Elvy!!
: drat it, I gotta get away!
:!
: …
: You’re—! Reika… Mishima?! You’re alive…?!
: …!
: How are you inside the RahXephon…?!
: (Come on… Let’s go, Ayato…)
: Huh?!

*Alarm!*

: We’re detecting quantum condensation inside the Neriya Shrine!
: What did you say?!
: Heh… He finally steps onto the stage.

: The RahXephon’s outside!
: Very good…
: A-Ayato…!
: But why…?
: Heheh…
: Did you expect this to happen from the start?
: That's a secret… But I at least didn’t force him to fight, hm?
: What happened…? Why did you decide to fight?
: Because I can.
: !
: I’m able to pilot the RahXephon, so I should do whatever I can to help… That’s what I thought to myself…!
: …
: Have the RahXephon engage the D1 and D2s.
: Roger! You’re up, Ayato!
: Right! Here I go!

Don’t ask me what happened here because I’ve no idea. The important thing is that the RahXephon now has several new attacks.

So we move Ayato forward and have Elvy join up with him.

Enemy Phase!

The Dotems are more accurate at point-blank and Elvy can’t oneshot them with only her vulcans.

And here comes the D1 – Graave.

: Can I do this…? No, I have to…! This is what I chose!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUmepZyEPbo

Player Phase!

: … An unblemished mirror… The heathen poet… Spiraling time revolves…
: It comes… the other mechanical god.
: The Nahel Argama’s entering Nirai Kanai’s airspace!

: All units—
: Hold on! I’m getting some strange energy readings coming from the hangar!
: What?!
: Th-The Raideen’s launching by itself!
: What about Akira?!
: He’s inside it!

: !!

: RAAAAAIDEEEEEEEEEEEEN!!
: Ra…ideen…?! They’re alike…!

: !
: What…?! This is the Raideen’s cockpit…! But when did I…?
: That robot’s looking this way…?!
: …
: Huh?! There’s a girl there…?!
: …
: Who are you…? What are you doing at a place like that?
: Akira, what’s going on?! Akira!
: A-ah! Mari…
: What the hell just happened?!
: I felt the Raideen calling out to me… When I came to, I was already inside…
: Then it wasn’t you…? You’re saying the Raideen launched of its own will?
: It’s just like that time…
: What is the RahXephon doing?
: It appears to be triggering some sort of resonance but we’ve no detailed information!
: “Resonance”…? Not with the D1’s aria but with that Raideen?
: Are those two units somehow related…?
: The divine bird, crowned with ancient light, carver of the blue forest…
: I see… Looks like we’ll need to revise our understanding of things.
: …
: Akira, are you really alright…?
: Y-Yeah… Whatever was happening, it’s gone.
: Then send out the remaining units!

Again, don’t ask! Let’s just tear through the remaining mooks because both Raideen and RahXephon have shot up to max morale.

The Dolems make good fodder for our lower leveled guys to catch up.

Don’t even need to weaken them… on most cases.

Roux can carry her weight, though. She learns Alert.

Even Michiru can oneshot things today!

This actually turned out to be a risky move because I overestimated the Garmraid’s resilience. Hugo’ll be fine but only barely.

Maybe I should buy him some Prevail…

Meanwhile, we’ll send some of our chatty folks to deal with the Graave.

: Watch it, Ginga! That’s an actual MU bot!
: The ones who did that big war before we were born, yeah?
: Right! They got the whole world up in a huge panic!
: Well, that was back then! Today, we’re gonna wreck this thing right up!

: This foe… it came from within Tokyo Jupiter?!

The Dolem’s got a bit of HP but that’s all.

Courtesy of that resonance, Ayato’s in good position to blast two Dotems with his God Go-Gun Arched Light.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xumCpE0lhFs

Enemy Phase!

The Dolem can’t even break Ayato’s barrier now. Meanwhile, Hugo gets harassed by four Dotems, taking some hefty damage.

Player Phase!

Kirakuni needs some love.

Barely enough for a kill but he’s good.

Elvy and Iino clean up two of the remaining three Dotems; I insisted on having everyone standby for a turn however.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PC9PBZFkw64
Boss Borot is actually my most upgraded unit so far… I’ll make killers out of them.

Now, let’s wrap up the Dolem.

: Whatever happened fifteen years ago, we’re around now! You MUs won’t be doing your thing this time!!

: This crazy doll’s looking a whole lot tougher than the ones we took out before…!

: This is a D1, the MU’s primary weapon… Does this mean they’re starting another offensive like the one fifteen years ago…?!

: A D1… one of MU’s Dolems…! Did the Raideen make me Fade In to fight this thing…?
: Or, maybe, what awoke the Raideen was…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jiz_WAudjrw
The morale boost lets me show off Akira’s best attack.

: They even sent a D1 outside…! drat those MU… Are they starting a full-blown invasion of this world?!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxThJyiE5q0
Gotta show off Ayato’s strongest move, too.

Meg confirms everything dead, so Kunugi asks her and Kim to get in touch with Bright and call him over to TERRA’s HQ.

Goodies dropped: Repair Kit, Biosensor (Mobility +10), Super-Alloy Z.

TERRA’s managed to pull through without any issues, all thanks to the Argama’s timely intervention. Watari also praises Kunugi’s decisions during the whole thing… the ones made fifteen years ago weren’t as good.
Regardless, the past is in the past and more important is the contact between the Raideen and RahXephon. Watari had expected something like that to happen, even during their first encounter, though. For now, they’ll wait and see what happens.

Souichi’s briefed our commanders about the RahXephon – which Misato remembers to be the actual objective of Operation Overlord. Isshiki is “impressed” by NERV’s ability to know stuff they shouldn’t; of course, TERRA isn’t any better.
Either way, the reason Bright was called over is that TERRA would like to entrust both the mech and its pilot to our group. That shocks Bright and Misato, Douglas asking if the thing isn’t TERRA’s closest guarded secret; yes but the decision had been made by both the director and commander, so…
Misato wants to hear the reason behind this and Isshiki figures it’s the same as Gendou’s: have our group act as a diversion for their enemies and take out whatever Dolems Tokyo Jupiter sends. Bright looks on, dazed, at our growing “poo poo needs killing” pile.

Our people are appropriately puzzled over Raideen and RahXephon’s reaction, seeing that our previous convo about the two bots being alike to each other went beyond mere physical similarities.
Akira himself confesses that it’s not the first time something like this happened; while he hadn’t met the RahXephon before today, the Raideen displayed a similar reaction some two weeks ago (before he and Mari joined our group). That’s about the time when Operation Overlord was happening.
There’s obviously a connection between the two bots, though Tap doesn’t think they’re enemies… but they also don’t feel like friends either.

Akira hasn’t the faintest idea, though one thing does have him worried: he saw a young girl, in a yellow dress, standing atop the RahXephon’s shoulder during the last fight. No one else saw anyone there, though.
“A young girl standing on a robot’s shoulder in the middle of a battle… That’d be pretty strange, huh?” Ryouma ponders. “True, true. Dangerous, too,” Kouji adds.
Kaine asks if maybe Akira imagined things and Tap warns him to think his answer carefully, lest it set Mari off. As she insists she wouldn’t, Akira ponders how only he saw the girl there. Why? And just what does the Raideen have to do with that RahXephon?

Haruka breaks the news to Ayato that the two of them, the bot, and Megumi are to be posted to the Nahel Argama in three days' time. Itsuki says that this is surely a great opportunity for all kinds of sightseeing, and maybe to learn more about what’s going on in Tokyo.
Besides, Itsuki’s heard that there are plenty of kids Ayato's age in the group – he thinks Ayato should be able to make some good friends, including Reideen's pilot. On that subject, Ayato asks if Itsuki knows anything regarding a connection between the two bots but he says nope. Ayato hasn’t any idea either (Itsuki, privately, isn’t surprised).
Either way, Haruka says there’s still time before they move to the Argama, so he can take time to get himself mentally ready… or not, as Ayato says he’s fine. After all, he’s already resolved himself to do whatever he can with the RahXephon. At least that’s a weight off Haruka’s shoulders.

Isshiki reports the two mechs’ encounter to Bähbem and asks if he’s no problem with transferring the RahXephon. The old man tells him that’s none of his beeswax, so Isshiki drops the subject.
Still, Bähbem tells him to be at ease: “Without the Star of La Mu, its song will not reach the RahXephon.” Seems like they’re getting some confirmation as to what the Raideen is, though there’s no hard proof just yet; if they want answers, they’d have to ask Princess Lemuria, a.k.a., Reiko Hibiki.
That being said, Bähbem already has an inkling of what she, and the people of the ancient Mu Empire, were thinking.

In fairness, one of the biggest problems with using young pilots is that none of them are willing soldiers pretty much by default, so it's only natural they would balk at least at first. Especially Ayato, considering that he's being told to kill people from his hometown; aliens they may be, but one of them is literally his mother, so pressuring him to fight is actually pretty hosed up. If anything, they've all become accustomed to war remarkably fast.

In fact, the real problem seems to be with the willing pilots: Asuka and Rei are both incredibly hosed up on the mental side as a major plot point, Hugo must have been a child soldier who got screwed up something bad during the Gundam war, and most of the Gundam kids are just lucky to be alive; even then, I think Puru 2 was the only 'willing' pilot of the bunch, and her circumstances are also pretty hosed up.
