Apparently, Radio Shack is going to go back to their old model instead of trying to offload phones. http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/gadgets/a19703/radioshack-back/

Now there are inexpensive soldering irons and a 3D-printing pen capable of "drawing" small plastic sculptures, and RadioShack-brand do-it-yourself starter kits to make water alarms or electronic clocks or a theremin. These kits, which have been around for years, were an important part of the new effort. Michael Tatelman, the new chief marketing officer, says it's an explicit attempt to court a new generation of makers and STEM students—the type who might be buying parts for decades to come. I remember Radioshack would have remote control cars sitting out for people to play with in the store. Only problem was that every time you tried to ppay with one of them they'd either have no batteries or be broken.

Skoll posted:Apparently, Radio Shack is going to go back to their old model instead of trying to offload phones. Yeah no that article is BS. It's from April and it's now September and Radio Shacks are still exactly the same as they were before the bankruptcy. If anything they're even worse. I don't equate hiring Nick Cannon as Chief Creative Officer or whatever to design yet another line of overpriced headphones with "going back to their old model." quote:One of the revamped RadioShack stores on the outskirts of Fort Worth, Texas—where the company was headquartered for decades—has an aisle full of remote-control cars and boats that could have been featured in Saturday morning cartoon commercials 30 years ago. These kits, which have been around for years, were an important part of the new effort. Michael Tatelman, the new chief marketing officer, says it's an explicit attempt to court a new generation of makers and STEM students—the type who might be buying parts for decades to come. -lovely RC cars and drones have been there for years, and "an aisle full of cars and boats" just means they still haven't gotten over their bad habit of severely overstocking lovely low-margin products. -TVs and laptops are gone because nobody will give RS credit for product anymore (even before the bankruptcy they only carried Toshiba laptops and low-end Samsung and lovely Chinese-brand TVs) -Most cell carriers are gone because Sprint bailed them out and obviously won't let them sell Verizon or AT&T. -Inexpensive soldering irons have been there forever, too bad inexpensive in this case means really lovely. Their mid-range models are OK, but "Radio Shack carries soldering irons" has always been a thing. -Those DIY kits are meh. Almost all of them are either a decent assortment of resistors/LEDs/whatever, which is OK, but they're overpriced for what they are. The actual "make a water alarm!" kits are really basic stuff, and the money would be much better spent on one of those MAKE books and a grab bag of components. They at least carry some decent Arduino shields and a few random things from better-known brands like MAKE or Adafruit, but it's extremely hit-or-miss. For example, if you want to buy a Raspberry Pi, your only option at Radio Shack is the 1st-gen board, and even that is only sold as part of an overpriced kit. That whole article sounds like it was written by one of Radio Shack's PR people.

I used to go to jaycar in Perth all the time until it turned into a gimmick/toystore. The last time I needed bits and pieces I went to altronics in Perth which is not far from jaycar. Altronics seem to specialise in professional a/v stuff rather than toys. While I'm not into a/v it's a much nicer store than jaycar is these days. Of course sometimes when I need certain caps I have had to resort to farnell/e14 anyway. RS components sent me a fancy catalog and set me up with an account when I started my business so I went there a few times, but they don't really hold much stock in Perth, (everything was order in for what I wanted), just lots of expensive tools. So often I would try a jaycar or altronics for stock before ordering from RS

Speaking of Nintendo circa 1991, anyone else ever shop for video games at Toys R' Us? I remember they would have like the box art or something for games/systems, with a little pouch full of cards underneath. Instead of actually picking up the game/system, you'd bring the card for what you wanted to the register, pay for it, and then after the registers, there was a little bodega-looking enclosed counter where someone would check your receipt, then give you the game. I guess that's kind of how Gamestop does it these days, except not as lovely since you still ended up with the sealed game instead of an already-opened copy that's been sitting in a paper sleeve in a drawer.

Yep, that was standard operating procedure for Toys 'R Us videogame stuff at the time. I remember going there once to get Super Metroid, and the pricetag had a typo on it. It said the game was 999 dollars. I was 10 years old at the time and was crestfallen.

I am absolutely shocked that the TG16 got a namedrop here [well, referencing "NEC" anyway, so a really roundabout one]. Also, I want that wall of CRTs and the video splitter that's driving them. e. shocked because the TG16 was drat near nonexistent, at least in the northwest. I had a friend of a friend with one and I was utterly fascinated by it

I distinctly remember saving up the $48 it took to buy Mega Man 2. My brother and I didn't get regular allowances so the money literally came from finding change on the ground and the like. It took like three months. I made up a posterboard "thermometer" fundraising-style progress meter and everything.

I counted myself as broke and unlucky that all I had going was an old 2600 and a Game Boy, but I amassed way more $20-30 games of the latter, and around 40 of the former, than I ever would have if I'd had an NES. It's way easier to get a parent to give you five bucks toward a $20-30 game than one that costs $50-60, at least in my house.

JediTalentAgent posted:I do have to say, though, I get antenna for most my TV and there's a lot of content on there if you have an interest in older TV and movies. One station is even showing reruns of MST3K, and another plays old Johnny Carson Tonight Show episodes. JediTalentAgent is correct about the amount of teevee stuff that's bouncing around the airwaves free for the taking. Ever since analog teevee went dark and digital took over it's only gotten better. It helps perhaps that I live in television market #2 and Los Angeles has a special topography where all of the television towers reside way up high in mostly one place (Mt Wilson). However, there is nothing stopping any of you from simply plugging in a pair of old school rabbit ears and seeing what you can get over the air for FREE. It's not like buying and installing an aerial on your roof is a difficult task either. I'm the most un-handyman in the world and it was dead simple helping my buddy install an antenna with a simple roof mount. We had his garage mancave wired and running over the course of a Saturday and 3 or 4 beers. Of course, your mileage will vary on what you can recieve where you are at. Thankfully, there is a very well put together website that'll clue you in on to what could be out there for you with as little legwork as plugging in rabbit ears to dropping 60 bux on an outdoor antenna. http://www.rabbitears.info/market.php Happy hunting! In LA we have 2 better equivalents to TV Land (Me-TV and Antenna TV), a Game Show Network clone owned by the holders of the entire Mark Goodson/Bill Toddman library, a SyFy clone that shows new and old Outer Limits, one channel that airs Xena and Hercules, NYPD Blue, Hill Street Blues and others. A Western themed channel... the list goes on. It'll work when your cable falls over too! It's win-win. And often, you will be getting the best possible picture quality available since OTA doesn't squeeze and compress the pipe to fit everything through it like cable.
