Man I wish the best for him because he is probably my favorite PBP guy in the league, and I really biased in favor of Rick Peckham. Strader and Razor together might be my favorite duo in any sport.

And Strader and Redmond on WKBD 50! By the way, here's Dave Strader's last call for the Red Wings, on WKBD. In that time, local crews covered the team until the conference finals, so the end of the second round meant the end of the local broadcasts.

I can't stand baseball but love hearing Vin.
The bridge between radio and television broadcasting ends with him retiring.

Some could say Chick Hearns and they'd be right too.

Nobody could tell a waxing Koufax story and go immediately into a double play call without missing a beat.

Simmons: Did you stop liking me because I kept bringing up the Harden trade too much? I feel like you were mad at me for like two years.

Durant: No, I wasn’t mad at you.

Simmons: You weren’t?

Durant: Nah. I thought you should have gotten over it quicker than what you did, but I wasn’t upset. I was kind of puzzled.

Simmons: Puzzled? I loved watching you and Ibaka and Westbrook and…

Durant: Yeah, it was four years later, you should’ve gotten over it.

Do you remember way back in the day loving Lebatard had some picking thing where they'd get a b list celebrity to pick games and if they got too good, or too into it they'd fire them. I distinctly remember, or half remember, Lebatard firing someone for trying to "take into account wind conditions on gameday" because that's not what they were after.

Awful Announcing has a pretty interesting piece up about how some Disney stock analysts are getting a tad iffy about them, citing ESPN's NBA deal, cable subscribers, trying to follow up on Force Awakens' momentum, the new theme park in Shanghai, etc. A guy from Motley Fool refutes the concerns in there as well. It's a pretty neat look if you're into the inner workings of these kind of deals.

Would've really like to have seen this analysis include Disney's potential bid for Twitter b/v that seems to be several factors more bugfuck crazy than paying more for the NBA or for a theme park in China.

If that happens, also, doesn't Disney become God-King of Hot Takes?

Last night's BYU/Toledo football game was pretty rad. Adam Amin and Mack Brown are calling the game. Early in the 4th quarter Toledo is up by 3 in a 45-42 track meet.

Mack Brown promptly leaves and Amin has to call the rest of the game solo from the booth with Molly McGrath on the sidelienes chiming in. :stare:

E: Some context:

Yahoo posted:

It was bizarre, but I’m assuming there aren’t many flights from Utah (Amin mentioned Brown had to catch a car to Salt Lake City airport, which is 45 minutes from Provo, where BYU is located) back to Bristol. That leaves one to wonder why ESPN assigned Brown to the game in the first place if he had in-studio duties to attend to back East on Saturday.

Bill Simmons did a live facebook video and might be starting to realize torching the bridge with ESPN wasn't the greatest idea

quote:

“I think there’s some thawing with the ESPN thing. I think there’s a scenario in which Jalen would be on some day. I would tell you that, you know, there’s obviously a lot of things I miss about ESPN, I was there for a really long time… 14 years, but Jalen is way up there.

It’s just hard to believe that we just can’t do anything anymore media-wise. I mean, it makes sense, we’re on different teams and I get it, but you know, it’s just sad. We spent a lot of time together and we love doing stuff together and it’s a bummer. I mean I’m glad he gets to live on with Jacoby and on the NBA show and all that, but it’s always going to feel weird because that dude’s my brother.”

3 new 30 For 30 films on the way

quote:

“Phi Slama Jama,” focusing on the legendary University of Houston college basketball team that featured Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler, and made three straight Final Fours from 1982 to 1984, will premiere on Tuesday, Oct. 18. Directed by Chip Rives (The Eighth Wonder of the World), the documentary isn’t just a chronicle and celebration of one of college basketball’s great teams (who suffered one of the sport’s most heartbreaking losses in 1983). It’s also something of a mystery, attempting to find the whereabouts of role player Benny Anders, who disappeared after being kicked off the team in 1985.

Two weeks later, on Nov. 1, “Hit it Hard” covers the career of golfer John Daly. Following his 1991 PGA Championship victory, Daly suffered some professional and personal tumult before winning The Open Championship in 1995. Since then, Daly has had several comebacks while battling alcohol and gambling addiction, and various health issues. He’s still one of the most intriguing personalities in sports, largely because of a normal guy persona and personal flaws that make him far more relatable than many professional athletes. The documentary is directed by David Terry Fine (Salaam Dunk) and Gabe Spitzer (Every Day).

Then following the Heisman Trophy presentation on Saturday, Dec. 10, the third of ESPN’s new 30 for 30 films, “Catholics vs. Convicts,” will premiere. Directed by Patrick Creadon (All Work All Play), this documentary covers the Oct. 15, 1988 college football game between the No. 4 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (coached by Lou Holtz) and No. 1 Miami Hurricanes (led by Jimmy Johnson). Miami came into South Bend with a 36-game regular season winning streak. The nickname for the match-up came from t-shirts created by two Notre Dame students. Amped up from all the hype going into the game, both teams got into a fight before the game, which was named by USA Today as one of college football’s greatest games played from 1982 to 2007.

All of these sound great.

Assuming this is about Catholics vs Convicts that was a pretty big deal at the time. People acting like sports were going to die if Miami won, blah blah. I can get behind the thought that maybe find something other than UM for a while though. Jon Daly wasn't as plastered over the newspapers every day leading up to one event but I'd imagine that one will be interesting.

If you're complaining about Phi Slama Jama you can gently caress off right now.
