The cop in question also has a history of bad mojo in her past, which is totally not acceptable to reveal unless you're a black murder victim.

Jesus, kid, you're almost a detective. All you need now is a gun, a gut, and three ex-wives.

I don't believe that's correct; they can't just bust into your friend's house and search it, that's an illegal search because it's not reasonable. If you left the murder weapon at a friend's house and the cops said "Hey, can we search your place?" and your friend *consents* to the search, then that's a legal search and they can use the evidence they find against you. There are exceptions to the exclusionary rule (Most recently, a case where the officer had what he thought was a valid warrant but it was filled out in error ), but I don't think that's one of them.

From my understanding, the act of giving it to your friend is crucial. Once you do that the item is no longer yours. In the linked case it was just stuff the guy had left in the room so it was still technically his and thus protected.

So what you are saying is that the only reason he isn't in jail right now is because he paid the extortion money. And not because the police don't have enough evidence to charge him with anything.

Yea, Europe can't bitch about the US judicial system any more.

You have absolutely no idea that the US is the only country in the developed world to demand payment for bail, do you? Nobody else does it, because that would be called "extortion" as you rightly pointed out.

That is utterly false. It literally could not be more false. Unless you consider countries like Canada and the U.K. to be not part of the developed world. The actual deposits might be referred to as a surety, but the concept is identical: an amount sufficient to compel your appearance at trial.

No, it's not applied in all cases, but people in the US are often freed on their own recognizance. Where on earth did you get the notion that bail bonds or payment are a uniquely American thing?

Bail bondsmen have never really made sense to me.

The whole point of a bail is that it’s a deterrent from fleeing.

If I run, the government wants me found. They have a lot of resources to make my life difficult, they have most of my liquid assets, and I’m forfeiting anything I can’t carry on my back.

Why should I care if there’s a bondsman looking to find me on top of that?

It's how her species communicates

Government ain't gonna go chasing you. They put out a warrant, call your parents or spouse, and sit back until you run a red light in some podunk town. Your bank account won't get frozen unless you did some heavy federal felony. Bail bondsmen are the deterrent, the go getters, the followers. Actual cops and sheriffs won't look for you after a couple days of your warrant being out, there's lots of policing to do. Bail bondsmen are motivated by money, which means they're way more motivated than police.

And despite what conspiracy wonks and class warfare dipshits say, the primary job of the police is to maintain order. If you run, and you stay quiet, there's no reason to waste resources finding you. You're unlikely to be a threat to the peace if you don't make yourself into one, and the system means you'll either be found or live an extremely quiet life for what remains of it.

One of my favourite professional idiots was this guy who travels the world doing "50 most dangerous" of this and that. This time he was doing the most painful stings in the natural world and naturally, the gympie gympie was right up the top.

Now, this is a plant so insanely dangerous it can still poison you 100 years after being dried, pressed and put in a drawer in a museum. The barbs, once they're in your skin, can release their toxin for up to a year. The pain also is not affected by opiates, so you get to enjoy every moment of it unless, like some victims, you sever the afflicted part of you body.

So, naturally, this bloody fool just couldn't resist the urge to gently brush a single leaf against a tiny piece of skin on the back of a single finger.

Five seconds later he's doubled over in pain so severe it makes him vomit.

Yeah, but at least it went to a jury. So the system worked to a degree.

It's also difficult to compare because since it's a jury of your peers the viewpoints and opinions change. In the early 90's crime rates were still skyrocketing and you had Hillary talking about super-predators. If you sat those same 12 jurors down and tried that case again two decades later the results would probably be different.

It's the cases that don't go to juries that are the problems.
