Yeah like I said, I had it left over from college and even if I don't plan to use it for students its still something I think would come in handy doing other stuff or for my own personal usage. I don't know.

Yeah. I decided to just spend some money using USPS to mail stuff to my family that I decided I didn't need to bring. Cleared up a fair amount of room now.

Don't gently caress around with shoes. I wore a size 300 for a couple years because it was all I could find in a weekend of looking. Now my foot is permanently damaged. I've started wearing toe shoes (vibram) for the past year and my foot has mostly gone back to normal, but it took most of the year to get there. I'll be wearing the toe shoes for at least another year or two to nurse my foot back to health. Primary problem being that EVERY normal shoe I wear, no matter the fit, style, loose or tight, hurt my foot just having it on at all. Everything felt like it was pressing on the sides of my foot pretty hard, like wearing the size 300 felt.

My foot probably would have been fine with a size 305 or 310. My girlfriend at the time convinced me that the shoe would stretch and after multiple days of looking for shoes over 300, I gave up and gave in.

People pack entire computer towers when traveling overseas? What?

What city/province are you headed to, new guy?

I have big boy feet so I'm definitely bringing shoes. As for computer stuff, I am going to be guilty of that a bit. The big pain for my suitcases is that the winter coat I have is poofy enough to cause issues. As is the collection of clothes and such I am putting into the suitcases as well. It's all manageable, just annoying to figure out what should go wear to fit properly.

As for where I'll be at, its Guri City which is just outside of Seoul apparently by like 30mins.

Why not just wear the coat when boarding and take it off during the fight? I ended up having my big winter coat draped over my arm while boarding instead of in my bag. It freed up weight and a lot of space in my bag.

I wear 290 and can find them easily enough online or in stores here if you go to Brand stores or know how to look online. TreFitty, I'm 100% certain I posted Real Picky here before, which has like 150 pairs of size 310 right now.

Regarding Guri, I went out there one night to meet some friends my first year here. I remember passing out at a bar and then vomitting all over their single bathroom then frantically trying to mop it up and clean myself up. You got a subways stop which is nice, but the subways will stop running around 11pm. It has a small expat crowd and small party district. So, you'll find yourself in Seoul quite a bit.

My advice for weekends is maybe consider getting a room at Seoulland for the night and then being able to just go back in the morning. That or a taxi could cost you maybe 20k? 30k? idk, LUMMOX lived in a similar situation for ~2 years and could offer a better perspective on transportation costs.

I'd rather put it into my suitcase. I'm probably making it sound worst than it actually is to be honest.

Re: shoes they don't take up all that much space (its just 2 pairs on top of what I'll be wearing on the plane). I have a feeling I'll probably be going into Seoul every now and then since I'm a history nerd and remember going to the museums and such when I went to Korea back in like 2003/2004 so I'll probably go there on top of some of the other stuff.

One thing I might as well ask about, what are thoughts on VPNs and using them in Korea or is that not necessary? I don't watch a bunch of TV but someone I know said they were pretty sweet to have to access shows on the official streaming sites (eg. HBOGo) that have geoblockers.

Just use torrents. VPNs slow down your connection and there's nothing you need one for in Korea unless you really want to look at North Korean websites. Korean internet speeds are good for torrenting, you can usually get a show downloaded in a few minutes if it's well seeded.

The other issue with Asian sized clothing is shoulders. Even if I were rail thin I personally couldn't wear Asian shirts because my shoulders don't fit at all, I can't even move my arms.

The major streaming sites are blocked, but since it's a manual process (volunteer busy bodies) there are still plenty of options for you. Tumblr is popular for korean homegrown stuff.

I use VPN for stuff like Crunchyroll, there are free apps that you can put on your iPad. Or Tunnelbear works well if you need a paid option. The stuff I stream is infrequent so the free app I use, Betternet, works perfectly.

I don't use either of those. Amazon is typically what I use but I think I'll let my subscription lapse since the shipping won't be as useful while there. I'll hold off on getting a VPN until there to see if its actually needed or not.

If you're bored, I bet the following works well: get a $5/mo. VPS, turn it in to a VPN. AFAIK, they're blocking known VPN IP blocks, not VPS's. Last I checked my VPS/VPN worked, but I haven't had a reason to use it in well over a year. If you're at all technically inclined, a VPS can probably serve you in multiple ways beyond just VPN as well.

It'll probably have a bandwidth limit, and the terms of use probably won't allow it. You could just set up a raspberry pi at home and use that.

Most VPS's don't meter their bandwidth even when they say they do. RPi is nice, but you can't set one up at home from Korea. However, that would be a better option if you are at home now.

My flight to CA isn't til 7am Eastern so I'm just chilling watching Atlanta and eating pumpkin pie (I will miss this so much :smith:). I have an old SIM card phone from when I was living overseas a few years ago, how compatible are they with the Korean carriers or are they like the US companies that use the built in stuff?

Sometimes they work sometimes they don't, Korea has a weird system that isn't always compatible. Also you can get pumpkin pie from Costco, cinnabons are the better choice because there isn't one of those in Korea.

Their pecan is pretty good too. Costco is magical in Korea. Also make sure to get a hot dog and sit in the dining area to watch the people around you. I won't spoil anything but it's quite a show.
