I think it's time to just watch Snow White and the Huntsmen, already. I've been putting it off, but I honestly wanna see if this rough, atypical queer-ness carries over into his sophomore outing is also predicted stylistically in his debut. Like, the obvious point of the marketing is to keep your awareness of the plot thin and focus on the visual conception, so that you invent your own narrative. In the one I'm picking up, there's nothing like how omni-present "huge tits" are as characterization in Ghost in the Shell, primarily talking about the show. It's gonna be really funny if they basically go for some kinda fusion between Silence of the Lambs and Ex Machina.

Considering Masamune Shirow's post-GitS output (lots and lots of lesbian porn) I don't think it was originally intended to be any sort of a statement on how cyberspace/new technology effects how gender is viewed and treated. Not that that isn't fertile ground for storytelling.

I think that's more Batou asking why she doesn't min-max like him, especially considering his specialty isn't heavy weapons but electronic warfare. Like there's morphological differences between male and female bodies are still there even if they're prosthetic analogs, at least with strength and durability, so he basically asks why doesn't the Major pair her brains and combat ability with a more robust body? Not that Megatech or whoever couldn't build a female cyberbody to match Batou's own specs, but it sure wouldn't look like Kusanagi in ARISE or even SAC. Interestingly enough, Oshii's rendition is probably the most gender-bending, since Kusanagi in those films has an fairly androgynous body with some wide shoulders.

The manga even says that her original gender is unknown since basically noone knows who she actually is and the manga never tells. In Stand Alone Complex (a separate kanon) she's definitely female, though. I doubt a hospital would randomly switch their patients' outward gender.

If a bunch of gendermuffins decide to make GitS some sort of ridiculous statement, they're going to miss out on the important stuff like invisible people shooting eachother and giant tanks that can ram through concrete and rebar and the inevitable deus ex machina hilarity of Batou pulling some totally illegal heavy weapons out of the trunk of his car.

It's still all the same visual information that we got in the clips, and it's still all rather visually striking without ever being quite picturesque. I'm surprised SMG hasn't sprung by to lend his commentary, I know he's a real fan of Snow White and the Huntsman.

When Arise was edited into eight half hour episodes for the Alternative Architecture broadcast they added a fifth hour called Pyrophoric Cult that helped link into the movie. I would bump Innocence way down. It's not a bad movie, but it's significantly less interesting than Arise. With Arise, it's more of a "I wonder how they're going to piece together the team and deal with the bureaucracy as some insane task force", and it's mildly interesting because of that because you have expectations going in. Innocence is 2 hours of SOMETHING WEIRD IS GOING ON I HOPE BATOU GETS TO THE BOTTOM OF TH oh never mind, the Major deus ex machina's his rear end. Wow Kusanagi, u r so l33t. The most interesting plot point involves whether or not Batou's dog would be taken care of by Togusa if Batou ate it on his super cool mystery mission.

I love Innocence if only for how much of the dialogue is just quoting philosophy/religious scripture/poo poo that sounds like I should be getting the reference. I know plenty of people who hated the movie for that very reason, but I especially love this line: quote:We weep for a bird's cry, but not for a fish's blood. Blessed are those with a voice. They got Kenji Kawai back so the music is great too. Arise feels really bland in comparison, we've already seen how Section 9 got most of its members from various SAC episodes so it really brings nothing new to the table besides a young(er) Major. The visuals especially are almost crude compared to Innocence and every other animated iteration of GitS. I'm sure that's due to budget but it overall just feels like the weakest of the group.

Why are you watching Ghost In The Shell for the plot. Moreover, why are you watching it for the plot when that tactic causes you to tune out the film's entire runtime.

It's funny that I could show SAC to my mother and she could follow along because of things like Law & Order or CSI with some caveats like explaining the "what's a human in GITS" theme. There's interesting ideas in the manga GITS 2.0 - Man-Machine Interface, but generally poor execution due to Shirow getting high on his own supply, and it would work better if it's core kept the procedural but replacing Section 9 with Motoko Aramaki's clone army and how these aspects of her evolve, interact, and compete against one another.

The "orientalism" kinda runs heavy, even more so than the source material and it's adaptations. Not that the series doesn't have robot geishas and networked monks, but that heavy focus on the only real name Asian actor as well as the mixed-heritage African woman, it's just all in the first minute of the film that we can see. It's screaming practically that "it's foreign!" but here is also ScarJo.

I love the mystery and weirdness of those early episodes, like the Laughing Man hacking that police official in the middle of conference and suddenly his face turns into the Laughing Man logo and the episode where Section 9 is fighting multiple assassination attempts who are all inspired by the death threat. I feel that the whole Laughing Man plot falls apart the moment they sent the army after Section 9 and it ends up amounting to a whole lot of nothing in the end. With 2nd GIG, I could care less about the racist nationalists trying to stir up outrage toward Korean refugees, but stuff like creepy-assed Goda and Kuze and the climax made it more interesting. But yeah, the standalone episodes tend to be a helluva a lot better than the serialized stuff.

For me, the Laughing Man suffered from being much more interesting before the mystery was solved. That's why I liked 2nd GIG more. I also forgot Solid State Society in my list. Haven't watched it in quite a while but I thought it wasn't half bad.
