You joke but we have literally this problem with one of our main backoffice applications. We have x users and roughly x*0.7 licenses. However the application is web based, just closing the browser window doesn't release the license and it doesn't time out. So occasionally an admin needs to log in and delete the orphaned sessions, but if there are no available licenses to log in, welp.

We do this and it's really irritating. In exchange for not having to spend a few hundred for a couple more seats we regularly have to play the "oh can you log out I just need to place this order" game. I'm glad that somebody has decided that the inconvenience and delay caused by this is not worth solving.

I have one supplier that has 2 teirs of logins. Individual unique login which we have and unlimited people on our network can log in at the same time. The lower tier is 1 single username and password for companies that just want technical documentation but no ordering or pricing access. Country wide.

The second one is regularly down if 3 people screw up the login in a day. ANY 3 people. This kills access to a large number of companies from logging in. I know this happens when my phone lights up with calls from service agents etc that need information right now.

The best part is that automated jobs which interface with the system (through their official API) also consume a license. So occasionally the jobs will fail because there's no license for them. :downs:

At least the jobs themselves are nice enough to destroy their session when completed.

So somehow Im in charge of getting Kaspersky Security Center working. In our small test group the first problem has appeared: Filezilla Client cant connect anymore. I try to add Filezilla to the trusted group. But theres no programs in the application policy list. So I scower the web on how to get programs in there. Both the network agent and kaspersky have the applicable setting. Then I run an inventory task. Still not a single program listed. Called Kaspersky, phone person has no clue and is gonna open a ticket for me.

Im going home.

This pisses me off too. We have a several departments that don't need to access it much so the license is free, most of the time. It also does terminate when you close the application or the program crashes, but if you pull the power or there is a power outage it doesn't kill the session.

The problem is when everyone tries to use it at once we often 2-3 licenses short, it really doesn't help that several power users will run 3-4 copies each using a license to run long reports that take 10h + (mostly because the drives on the server are a massive bottleneck).

On average we have 5-6 free licenses but end of the month when everyone is trying to get stuff in it's 2 days of people calling asking why they can't get in and power users being angry because they need to run their reports more than ever. To properly license for power users we'd need a dozen or so more licenses.

Give him aliases or a shared mailbox if you don't want to use licenses.

Edit: oh wait he already has aliases lol. Why the hell would anyone need that???

Edit 2: like seriously what security concerns could there possibly be that would warrant an end user to have two mailboxes? And are you using AD sync and now have an end user with two AD accounts??

You mean where I keep all of last years important contracts?

Also gently caress dealing with telephony bullshit so much, my eyes are going to pop out from this headache.

Our VOIP host contract runs out at the end of the week and it's rapidly appearing that our phone numbers aren't being ported in time, I submitted the request last month and nothing is loving happening. Of course I had to bring in upper management to play telephone deathmatch with both providers, because we're in for a world of poo poo if we lose our inbound customer lines. Our current provider threw us bone by offering a contract extension of three months minimum, of course this made the director furious since we've used these guys for three years and have paid them an obscene amount of money for telecoms, when all we want to do is temporarily forward the numbers onward having nothing to do with their call platform.

We're trying for some kind of hail mary as there are at least five inbound lines which are critical to the business, and prepping for the epic shitstorm of having to contact all of our clients if we have to change numbers (which never, ever goes well).

Sounds like if it's critical then you should suck up the 3 month charge and find a new provider to move to. They've dropped the ball right at the start.

One account is synched with AD, the other is not but the one that is has full access rights to it so if anyone knew his domain credentials they could just access both using outlook.
The password is the same for both accounts anyway, because it's the one he wants set for everything, so our whole department knows it and I know he's going to be pissed in a few months when the new password policy forces him to change it and won't let him reuse the existing one.

The mail migration was the single biggest part of this year's single sign on project (though there were many good reasons to ditch that hosted provider) and he's bitched every time an app has been added to the list that use domain credentials because he already used the same password for everything so the very concept is stupid.

I dislike him. For security reasons.

Pissing me off: other site.

Just got asked to fix an issue for a user that I don't have the account info for. Sounded like software I just installed for another user. Nope That other user left NINE MONTHS ago. The new person took over and has been using the old user's email and login for everything. The user only speaks Spanish so I've never talked to them directly as I could never told a technical conversation.

This is getting changed right now Next week. They are the accountant and end of the month means no downtime allowed. Even if I remote in at 2AM this will involve downtime when they don't call until half way into the day that they can't log in. Even if I make the new accounts and email it to them and have someone translate it and give them 48 hours, it wont get done.

Calling to suspend copper lines.

I was dragged into a meeting because I got the number for the alarm system by unplugging the line, plugging in a pots phone and dialing my cellphone. It was mostly does anyone remember what phone number was used for 20 years ago? No? Okay let's put it on the keep list just in case we still need it. I asked why we don't just suspend the line for 30 60 or 90 days and disconnect it if nothing freaks out.

So because I have the magical knowledge I get to call and cancel 2 lines and suspend 30. Best part is the CFO is the only point of contact so she still has to approve the list that is going to be snail mailed because there is no email on file. One can be added using the form that they are mailing along with a return envelope.

At least I've been told everything this saves is going directly into the server replacement fund. Sadly after the server gets purchased it will return to general funds instead of IT.

I'm not privy to the full details but I've heard of a data center horror story someone had to deal with.

Customer's DB server went down, doesn't boot now, and they were working on troubleshooting
Customer was working with a support group to troubleshoot due to it's location in the data center. At some point that support group ended up deciding to reformat the disk without approval from the customer, then based off of all the troubleshooting is billing $3K and won't return access until the bill is paid.
:psyduck:

Customer managed to get the server to another data center somehow but god drat.

I'm curious how anyone could live in a reality where formatting a disk is a valid recovery procedure, whether it's authorized or not. I mean we all know "reboot and reinstall" was a thing 15 years ago but no legit admin ever considered that to be a primary remedy.

Especially on a database. People stash so much critical data into those things my first inclination is to verify there's a usable backup and/or clone the disk before I start tinkering. It's too drat easy to get into an unrecoverable state if you dive in with a hatchet.
