http://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/man-suffers-serious-burns-after-plunge-into-hot-tar-1.3088934

quote:

TORONTO -- A 37-year-old man is in life-threatening condition after being encased in hot tar that solidified during an industrial accident in Toronto on Monday morning.

Rescuers worked for more than a hour to free the man after the incident, which occurred around 7:30 a.m., according to Toronto Fire platoon chief Dave Denysek.

He says the man was in a truck when liquid tar spilled from a reservoir in the back of the vehicle, trapping the man.

"When (the tar) came out of the reservoir it went all around and when tar is exposed to the air, it hardened very quickly," Denysek told reporters at the scene.

He said firefighters had to slice away part of the truck before slowly cutting hardened tar in small pieces away from the man's body.

"The victim suffered serious burns to his head and arms," said Toronto Paramedic Services Dep. Commander Evert Steenge.

He said the man was rushed to the burn unit of a local trauma centre.

Police said the man was breathing and conscious throughout the ordeal.

No, he was probably just horrible burned. There's a serious risk he'll die from infection because his skin was burned off by tar. Even if he survives all that he's gonna be all hosed up and scarred for the rest of his life.

That's just a sad real life story, not a fun comic book story

Still not as bad as one of my wife's highschool classmates who had an entire dumptruck of hot-asphalt-or-tar-or-something accidentally empty its contents all over his car as he was parked behind it at a red light.

I had to have my cat put to sleep this evening.

I know she was only a cat, but she was a loyal friend and companion for 15 years and it was still one of the hardest decisions I think I've ever had to make.

If the encased in tar guy dies from his injuries after days of agony at the hospital, that's probably worse than dying relatively quickly in the tar spill

Thanks for saying, and I sure do hope so; she she definitely wasn't well - she'd been ill earlier in the year but recovered, but then it was a very fast decline over the past week. Still, she was never treated unkindly and she never wanted for anything. 15 isn't bad for a cat.

There's no such thing as "only a cat". Her friendship was equally meaningful as a human's, if not more. I'm sorry for your loss.
