That Works posted:Oh cool, same person that did Hito Hitori Futari. Thanks for linking this. Bakuon Rettou is a really cool period piece look at the bosozoku life of the late 80s and the way it attracted aimless souls. Dark but really compelling and it was popular enough that it's actually getting reserialized in a magazine right now.

I've been reading Dorohedoro. Its really good. If anyone else has been sleeping on this excellent manga for as long as I have, I would recommend that it is time to wake up and read it (the manga Dorohedoro by Q. Hayashida).

I've noticed that I'm a huge sucker for manga where either 1. a group of people are forced to play some sort of Death Game* (either due to the rules or due to some time limit) and don't know who the culprit is or 2. a group of people is thrust into a post-apocalyptic scenario with monsters and poo poo. Even if I know it's bad, I still enjoy reading them. A good example is that manga by the Boku Dake ga Inai Machi author with the kids trapped in a sinking ship or something. It is not a very good manga but I'm almost always fine with different iterations of that same premise. *I might even go as far as to say this is its own genre.

In the realm of gore filled garbage that knows what it is, Baki is way better than Gantz e: actually I'm not sure that Gantz even DOES know what it is

Turns out the real monster was the aliens all along.

I recently saw a manga called Kyochuu Rettou (literally "giant insect tropical island") which is basically exactly what it sounds like and about as lovely as you imagine it is but just like you I gobbled up like a dozen chapters before getting sick of it Also there's a Korean webtoon called Hive with a similar premise about gigantic wasps which was also bad but inexplicably pretty popular What I want to say is giant insects are cool and good Higanjima, Hakaijuu, Cage of Eden, etc. also qualify and I agree it's totally a genre of its own

Hakaijuu is great and obviously takes a lot of inspiration from Lovecraft and The Mist. Too bad a handful of chapters get translated a year.

i like survival stories where there's a lot of focus on robinson crusoe type stuff. like in suicide island or 7seeds. building a life out of nature. although 7seeds is quite a bit more science fictiony and fantastical

Wonderland is by the same person who does Sprite and it's pretty good. It's about a city in which everyone suddenly shrunk. The dog is the best part of the manga. RatHat fucked around with this message at 22:37 on Sep 26, 2016 |

Higanjima is alright but the pace is glacial and there's something I find really creepy(not the scary kind) about it.

Aside from the Sprite suggestion above for number two, here's a couple other names mostly for the death game genre i have lying around. No comments on their quality, they vary greatly. Some are extremely trash, some are just trashy. You'll quickly figure out what's what. Not Lives (or sometimes Not Alive?) Darwin's Game 6000 Alice in Borderland Kingdom Game Doubt (or sometimes Rabbit Doubt) I've read Dorohedoro like 3 times already, every time it seemed like the scans pick up again. I think this time i'm just gonna wait until it's finished. Eh, who am i kidding

There was a "Death Game" series I read years ago and dropped for whatever reason. I don't remember what it was called but it had high schoolers being forced to play a series of lethal games, I think the first game was like the Japanese version of Red Light, Green Light. Does anyone remember that one?
