How many generations of born-in-Canada do you need to be to not be a 2nd class citizen? I'm not even talking old-stock, just old enough stock not to get deported.

You can go back two generations and still get citizenship in Ireland. If you're part of the Jewish diaspora, you have a right to return, meaning that you're second-class by just being born even if you're like six generations of known Judaism in the family.

Depends on your skin-tone, I think. My father was from Germany, and never lost his very heavy accent. He probably encountered some crap in the years after WW2. Being an immigrant's kid has never noticeably made a difference for me, outside of the culture inside/outside the house being a bit dissonant. Even if people notice the Germanic last name, they're laughing over how to pronounce it or guessing that it's Dutch.

When people hear "cuts" they think of the former.

The rate has been increasing by 6% per year since 2004. Starting next year it'll go down to 3% per year (or slightly more in the case of improbably high GDP growth). The Liberals promised to "renegotiate" this before coming into office but are now saying they'll maintain Harper's scheduled reduction in payments. They might end up sending some money for specific programs but they've clearly signalled they want to stick to Harper's schedule.

That is a great analogy actually, the driver has a ton of control on where the car goes but he does have to be mindful of the vehicle's limitations. We're swerving all over the road so a driver change sounds like a good plan.

Monarchy over multiculturalism, says Leamington mayor
'Don't force us to change our ways,' Ontario mayor says

As the royal tour makes its way through Canada, one southwest Ontario mayor is calling on Canada to scrap its current multicultural policies and focus on ties to the monarchy.

In a Facebook post Sunday, Leamington, Ont., Mayor John Paterson responded to a post criticizing the monarchy:

The original Facebook post appears to have been deleted by the poster Dharmesh Patel. But a viewer shared a screen capture with CBC News in Windsor.

When CBC reached Patel, he said he's not personally offended by Paterson's comments and the two remain friends. He said he believes the money spent on hosting Prince William and Kate could be better spent elsewhere.

Patel said his parents came to Canada in the 1970s and they are proud Canadians.

Paterson stood by his Facebook comments Monday, telling CBC he welcomes new Canadians from around the world. But he expects them to conform to Canadian culture.

"If you're going to come to Canada and swear allegiance to Canada, which includes an allegiance to the monarchy, then be Canadian, that's all I'm saying," Paterson said. "Don't force us to change our ways. Come to Canada and be Canadian."

Paterson said he's not criticizing immigrants, but federal programs promoting multiculturalism. To Paterson, those come at the expense of traditions like the British monarchy.

"It doesn't matter to me personally what your background is. But when you come to Canada, be Canadian. Don't challenge our history," Paterson said. "Our history is tied to the monarchy and Great Britain. If it hadn't been from our forefathers from that country from centuries ago, Canada wouldn't be the great country it is today."

Nearly one in three Leamington residents listed a language other than English or French as their first language, according to the latest figures from Statistics Canada.

In Leamington, some residents said they weren't happy with the mayor, who has made controversial statements in the past. In 2013 he called on police to crack down on "lewd" behaviour from Jamaican migrant workers.

One person said they thought the mayor was "crazy" for making those statements.

"I don't think the mayor should be making a comment like that considering Canada is pretty much based on multiculturalism," said Tanya Smith. "If it wasn't the way that it is, we wouldn't be as free. People come here because it's warm and inviting."

Well they also passed a "middle class tax cut" that didn't effect anyone making less than 40k, which trimmed federal income taxes by about $50 annually for someone making $50,000 (the median income in Canada is 27,6000). For someone making $200,000 by contrast the savings are $800. This brilliant piece of policy making was supposed to be revenue neutral because they slightly increased taxes on earners over 210,000 but as I recall once they'd actually implemented it they found out it will remove about a hundred million dollars annually from the budget.

Hopefully some of the spending on social housing and infrastructure gets put to good use. The Liberals aren't literally the same as Harper but I'd say they're a lot more similar than most people seem to want to acknowledge.

Kelowna's top cop retires as Abbotsford Police investigate "multiple allegations" at the detachment
Investigation began at the same time Supt. Nick Romanchuk took a leave of absence

The leader of the Kelowna RCMP has retired in the middle of an independent investigation into his detachment.

RCMP Supt. Nick Romanchuk has been off since Sept. 6 with no reason given. In an email, RCMP Staff Sgt. Rob Vermeulen said Romanchuk had decided to retire, but offered no details.

It comes while the Abbotsford Police Department continues to investigate a series of allegations against the Kelowna RCMP - an investigation that began at the same time Romanchuk took a leave of absence.

"I don't want to get into the specifics of it, but I will confirm that our investigators are involved...and that it's a series of allegations," said Cst. Ian Macdonald of the Abbotsford Police.

"I don't want to say anything that could hamper or interfere with our investigation."

Romanchuk became Kelowna's superintendent in 2013, following a number of years commanding detachments in the Kootenays.

An interim regional detachment commander is now in place.

Ontario cancels plans for more green energy citing strong electricity supply

Energy minister says move will save province about $3.8 billion, keep $2.45 from being added to hydro bills

Ontario's energy ministry is cancelling plans to sign contracts for up to 1,000 megawatts of power from solar, wind and
other renewable energy sources to help keep rates down for consumers.

Energy Minister Glenn Thibeault says the decision is expected to save the province up to $3.8 billion in costs from its 2013 long-term plan, and will keep about $2.45 a month from being added to hydro bills.

Thibeault says the Independent Electricity System Operator's planning outlook determined Ontario has a robust supply of electricity for the next decade and won't need the additional power it had planned to purchase.

He's also looking for ways to reduce costs in the province's next long-term energy plan, which is scheduled to be released in 2017.

Thibeault says the government's investments in the electricity system over the past decade mean Ontario has "a strong supply of clean power."

http://www.cbc.ca/beta/news/canada/toronto/ontario-electricity-plans-1.3780440

$3.8 billion divided by the number of Ontarians is almost $300 bucks for every man woman and child, I'm not sure how they got $2.45 per bill but whatever it is a step in the right direction only 6 years too late.

"Tiny Trains"

So people in Victoria have been making a big deal out of our mayor being a reasonable host and greeting the royals. It proves she's a massive horrible hypocrite! You see, when she was sworn in as mayor she didn't pledge allegiance to the queen (as well as about half the council) because they thought it was a dated and silly thing.

Did you know you can't say hello or welcome someone to your city if you haven't pledge allegiance to their grandma? I don't know what they expected her to do, not show up at a major event? Be rude? Punch the royals on sight? Apologize and beg forgiveness from our natural ruling class? I had forgotten about the whole thing but apparently her and and bunch of council opting (as in it's an existing option, not some protest thing they did) for the swearing in that didn't involve the queen was a huge slight to CANADA. People were ranting about how it proves she's not just a socialist but anti-democratic because the queen represents democracy so if you don't swear your loyalty to a monarch it means you hate democracy and freedom.
