How many generations of born-in-Canada do you need to be to not be a 2nd class citizen? I'm not even talking old-stock, just old enough stock not to get deported.

You can go back two generations and still get citizenship in Ireland. If you're part of the Jewish diaspora, you have a right to return, meaning that you're second-class by just being born even if you're like six generations of known Judaism in the family.

Depends on your skin-tone, I think. My father was from Germany, and never lost his very heavy accent. He probably encountered some crap in the years after WW2. Being an immigrant's kid has never noticeably made a difference for me, outside of the culture inside/outside the house being a bit dissonant. Even if people notice the Germanic last name, they're laughing over how to pronounce it or guessing that it's Dutch. Pixelante fucked around with this message at 02:53 on Sep 27, 2016 |

There's a difference between "I was going to give you 10 but now I'm only giving you 9" and "I was going to raise your payments from 10 to 12 but now I'm only raising them to 11". When people hear "cuts" they think of the former. The rate has been increasing by 6% per year since 2004. Starting next year it'll go down to 3% per year (or slightly more in the case of improbably high GDP growth). The Liberals promised to "renegotiate" this before coming into office but are now saying they'll maintain Harper's scheduled reduction in payments. They might end up sending some money for specific programs but they've clearly signalled they want to stick to Harper's schedule.

Furnaceface posted:So the only place where the Liberals deviated from the old regime is on refugees. Well they also passed a "middle class tax cut" that didn't effect anyone making less than 40k, which trimmed federal income taxes by about $50 annually for someone making $50,000 (the median income in Canada is 27,6000). For someone making $200,000 by contrast the savings are $800. This brilliant piece of policy making was supposed to be revenue neutral because they slightly increased taxes on earners over 210,000 but as I recall once they'd actually implemented it they found out it will remove about a hundred million dollars annually from the budget. Hopefully some of the spending on social housing and infrastructure gets put to good use. The Liberals aren't literally the same as Harper but I'd say they're a lot more similar than most people seem to want to acknowledge.

So people in Victoria have been making a big deal out of our mayor being a reasonable host and greeting the royals. It proves she's a massive horrible hypocrite! You see, when she was sworn in as mayor she didn't pledge allegiance to the queen (as well as about half the council) because they thought it was a dated and silly thing. Did you know you can't say hello or welcome someone to your city if you haven't pledge allegiance to their grandma? I don't know what they expected her to do, not show up at a major event? Be rude? Punch the royals on sight? Apologize and beg forgiveness from our natural ruling class? I had forgotten about the whole thing but apparently her and and bunch of council opting (as in it's an existing option, not some protest thing they did) for the swearing in that didn't involve the queen was a huge slight to CANADA. People were ranting about how it proves she's not just a socialist but anti-democratic because the queen represents democracy so if you don't swear your loyalty to a monarch it means you hate democracy and freedom.

Seeing Hillary Clinton talk last night about how America will be the #1 superpower for clean energy made me feel bad for Canada. Y'all missed your chance to be relevant as an energy leader in the 21st century, instead pinning your future on tar sands. Imagine if instead Canada had invested heavily in alternative forms of energy, and could be instructing the rest of the world right now on how to build all the necessary infrastructure and having its experts consulted on all this stuff. Hillary Clinton posted:And let's build a cleaner, more resilient power grid with enough renewable energy to power every home in our country as well. Some country is going to be the clean energy superpower of the 21st century and create millions of jobs and businesses. It's probably going to be either China, Germany or America. I want it to be us! We invent the technology, we should make it and use it and export it, which will help to grow our economy.
