It slowed down a bit. Lots of people are frantically trying to offload their properties or pay lawyers crazy amount of money to expedite the transactions. But guess what? There's 13 billion people so another wave will be here pretty soon!

Once people figure out another way to get around Uncle Xi's floodgates, and get their money out of the mainland, there will be another surge. Especially if another round of purges start up and the average official is worried he might be the next symbolic arrest. Or possibly if the Chinese economy takes another stumble like earlier in the year, some of the upper crust might see the writing on the wall and decide to cash out. Either way, affordable housing in Vancouver will never be a thing.

So foreigners buying land instead of gold or other investments? Only the land just sits there or is underutilized so it's a poo poo deal for the country/people the land is situated in. Example: Vancouver's housing shortage despite there being enough housing.

It means they put their money into buying land/housing/industrial buildings etc just as you would normally park your money in a bank. Like parking money in a bank, they don't do anything with the assets like rent them out or develop them, just own them to tie up money. So the buildings are left vacant, reducing supply and increasing prices (which in turn makes them appreciate - so its self fulfilling when enough people do it). e: If you're buying property to rent out or develop, that doesn't count as land banking, it's investing. The only reason sales in Vancouver slowed down is because everyone looking to buy a place made sure to do it before the tax applied. Give it a few months and it'll be back to normal.
