The Dude was very vocal with his displeasure when I moved... and he was in the car for about 45 minutes. I had another cat that would piss and poo poo himself anytime he was in the car though. I'll take yowling over that.

So the entire STATE of South Australia has been blacked out by a massive storm. Tore out transmission towers on the high voltage distribution network which shut the entire system down to stop itself blowing up. Best thing about being a camping enthuisiast is your prepared for when the whole state goes back to the dark ages is your ready for this poo poo. Running the laptop, charging the phone and got the fiber modem and router! Fiber internet in a statewide blackout!

That's my wet-dream scenario for my bus. It has a 2kW inverter, 120w solar panel, three yellowtop Optimas and another two backup (not deep cycle) engine batteries, an A/C unit, and a diesel powered heater. I have plans for two or three more solar panels ($200 each, ouch) to be able to run the A/C (350W when compressor is cycled on) outright without the engine or shore power. Maybe one day I'll actually go camping with it.

Sometimes the fiber forwarders have generator/battery backup, same as cell towers.

what even ARE you posted:Sometimes the fiber forwarders have generator/battery backup, same as cell towers. This. At least in the US, fiber usually runs through a telco central office - COs pretty much always have battery backup that are good for a day or two, and sometimes generator backup. No telling how long it'll last, but I assume it's a somewhat similar setup. Data centers pretty much always have generators too, right? randomidiot fucked around with this message at 11:00 on Sep 28, 2016 |

They have had to put battery backup into the exchanges and that to run the fiber service because they have to be able to provide a service for people with medical equipment that needs online services

Bigger issue is the 4hr battery backups on the cell phone towers, because they're all starting to go flat and shut down...

Over the weekend I got some poo poo in my eye while lying under my truck trying to drill out a broken exhaust stud. I was wearing a full face visor but no glasses under it. After having my eye mauled by multiple nurses in both the walk in clinic and in A+E throughout Monday and them being unable to get it all out I finally got to see an ophthalmic specialist Dr this morning - who was evidently an amazing wizard and got it out in about 5 seconds flat on his first try. I just cant believe how two tiny specs of rust the size of small grains of sand could hurt so drat much! Blinking feels so good!

You're lucky it didn't start to come apart before he could get to it. When I had that happen, it took 15-20 grueling minutes of an eye doctor carefully digging out flakes that had come off the main chunk to get it all out of my eye. loving man had the patience of a saint since I tend to have an automatic reaction anytime something comes near my eye, charged me his normal office visit fee ($80) since my insurance wasn't set to go into effect for 2 more weeks, sold me his office samples of antibiotic drops at a massive discount compared to getting them at the pharmacy ($10 v $200+) and regaled me with stories of him doing the exact same thing while working on the exhaust of his E30 years ago. I make sure to refer anyone I can to his office.

I also cant usually get anything close to my eyes but multiple applications of anaesthetic eye drops seem to have made it easier. I now have all the bits to put the exhaust back together but I think its going to take me a few days before I can bring myself to get under the truck again.

Woo! Power is back on. Dont know how long for tho- they're predicting an almightly shitstorm to hit Adelaide tonight/tomorrow morning- 100-150kph winds. Yes that looks exactly like a cyclone/typhoon/hurricane. Yes that has an eye pressure of 973hpa and yes we are getting a cold cyclone at 35 degrees southerly latitude!

Hope you guys stay safe! In lighter news from all this, I brought my other All Trac from my friends house this weekend. Now I'm just waiting to hear back from some of my friends in the Celica world on how much they'll charge to do an engine swap (or just the head on mine, depending on how bad it is). With work, and now college, I just haven't had time to wrench on cars. I think that just getting it to run (reasonably reliably) will do a lot for my motivation to install some of the mountain of parts I have in the basement and garage for this. I'll make a thread when I know for sure if they'll be able to do it. Just having it around makes me want to drive it again. When we were on the highway, it was the fastest that car has moved in like 3 years, and that made me sad.

Tyre was making an audible hissing noise from the valve. Took it to a garage to get a new one put in and the mechanic said "I can do that but you look this is an original tyre from 2003". Good thing I've only put 300 miles it since buying the car last weekend. Looking forward to Monday and getting the horrible bang looked at when hitting small bumps at low speeds.
