Usually they have a pretty interesting premise, but then just go way off and spiral into cataclysmic scenarios on a Warhammer 40k scale. As dumb as they are, they're very entertaining though.

I got a giant book of New Yorker cartoons (strongly recommend getting whatever the latest edition is, to have a cinderblock-weight book to defend yourself with if nothing else) and one of the written pieces in it talks about how most of the old guard used gag writers for their ideas. It was actually uncommon for someone to both write and draw.
