it's time for TGA's "Hey, We're Moving Offices in China! lol!" part one, in case you missed it well, i set the over/under on days off that we will get as a staff at 15.5. a few people have bet the over, so the line has moved to about 17.5. we are on our second day off. today my wife was near our old office, it's just like two blocks away, and said she saw three girls with boxes and bags outside our office, waiting around. one boxed had broken and fallen open and stuff was everywhere, it looked like a bunch of books, so my wife assumed it was my company. it sounds like the moving company won't be coming back, and despite the fact that i've asked work time and again if i can help them move, as i'm a dude that works out 5-6 times a week and is fairly well built, but I'm always turned down, it sounds like they have the marketing girls moving stuff, which is very lol and i secretly kinda like it because for all the hours they've spent playing FarmVille or DiamondCrush or whatever loving dumb game they are playing, it's nice of them to earn a paycheck for once. i asked my wife "please tell me you took a picture?" and she said no, it was too embarrassing. which is exactly why you should take a picture imo, but my wife is all class. i'm not. we now have five days off for the holiday, and we were kicked out of our old office today. we are officially office-less, if you don't count the picture in the original post. the HR girl i referenced in the original post is absolutely irate, she was talking to me and said "do you remember how you always say Chinese people tell you to 'wait a minute?' and then walk away?" and i was like "yeah", and she said "that's all anyone is doing to me now also" and i said "welcome to china" and she said "i'm furious" and i just wrote "lol". i kinda feel bad for her because i don't think she's that involved in this, other than it was her job to save face for herself and the company, which got blown up when andy and rich went over there and took pictures of our new office. lol! i'm going to spend the next few days drinking IPAs and Asahi Dry Black and playing with my son and not thinking about work at all, because there's nothing really we can do, because i'll ask people time and again if i can help in any way, shape or form, and even though i'm like the third highest person at the office, everyone assumes i am literally incapable of anything simply because I'm a foreigner. "Hey, don't forget you have to go to Beijing this week for that meeting," they'll say, and I'll say "yup" and they'll say "Did you buy the train ticket yet?" and i'll say "yup" and they'll say "Ok, please don't lose it, and please don't forget it" and i'm like "ok thx". people in my office unironically think they moving better than myself and the foreigners could have arranged. like they feel they are doing the best job that could have possibly been done. which is probably true given the circumstances, because none of us would have let our lease run up without a ready made office ready to move into. just seems like the first step in the moving process, right? ah well, who knows. will def. keep the thread updated as we figure out if this could be the very thing that causes a mass exit of employees and if this is the thing that ultimately kills the company. it would be funny if it were, lol!

in other news, yesterday the fam was out and about and we saw a lady put a newspaper out on the sidewalk outside a shopping mall for her kid to poo poo, but then held the kid over the very edge of the newspaper and it pissed and crapped and missed the newspaper. there was also a huge fight at the mall, involving two ladies, and there were definitely a few slaps and a ton of face lost, as well as a huge group of people standing around with their arms behind their backs, myself included. it was a good day off

Wow, he just had a vague idea of "present weapon, receive money" and ran with it with not even a second's worth of further thought. He didn't factor in that there might be resistance, or armed guards, or any kind of inconvenience. Even when he's there, he's so completely void of all independent thought and reason that he picks up his phone immediately to just chat about some other poo poo while he's robbing the bank. "Phone ring... so pick it up yes?? What means 'wait until better time'? It's an honest question there are cultural ideas that don't really translate to other cultures. Pettiness, being the bigger person, finding the thrower of a poo poo fit pathetic, these are all things that China doesn't seem to have and I don't know if it's just a completely foreign idea or what.

You just have to assume that every single possible thing is going to be hosed up beyond all recognition every day, all the time. Then find places that usually don't gently caress up and hit them up regularly. Whenever I go to a new restaurant I just assume they will gently caress up the dishes. When they don't it's like "hey what a great day", whereas in the USA I assume everything will just run smoothly and when it doesn't people freak out. It's the complete opposite end of the spectrum and totally doable if you have the right mindset

You can make yourself look like the king of hard work without actually doing much just by getting your work done efficiently instead of spending nine hours on Taobao looking at shoes. My bosses are Hong Kongers who lived in the US for 30+ years, which is nice because it vastly decreases the China bullshit I have to deal with at work but it does mean I have to actually put in effort. They have also never seen any of these wacky vegetables that are in China. Foreigners can only buy food outside. Do you know? The same people that believe this are the same people that can't boil water without starting a fire, and eat outside seven nights a week.

I will say here in Sichuan there is a lot more food knowledge and while people initially think it's odd that a man knows how to cook, they don't try to actively deny it the way they did in Korea. Assuming everything will be hosed up always is the way to go. If you go into a situation assuming it will work efficiently, you will be frustrated. When things do work, it's a nice surprise to enjoy. You have to act as if anywhere you go, it's everyone's first day working there and also possibly their first day on Earth. They simply sprung into existence, fully formed, with no memories or life experience prior to your encounter with them. No one has ever done anything before or knows anything about it, even if it's a job they've been doing for decades. When you do find competent people you treasure them and hold on with both hands. The woman who runs the office where I work is the most competent person I've ever worked with in Asia and is more capable than the entire rest of the company combined. The only reason anything works is because she is there. I think every foreign employee would quit immediately if she left.

I dunno, I've been to all sorts of places all over the world, and I've only ever heard of this kind of behavior - that is, acting like a huge baby, which is what you're describing - being regarded as normal and acceptable in China and Korea. Obviously, there are huge cultural differences all over the world. In many parts of Africa, for instance, while people have a great deal of warmth in regards to their family, their friends and their tribe/local community, it's not regarded as strange or a bad character trait to view people of lesser social status with contempt. Westerners, Americans in particular, appear incredibly self-centered to most cultures in the world. Russians have a sense of fatalism that is offputting to most other people. Germans despise the concept of humor, fun, or merriment. Every culture has its quirks, but nowhere in the world have I ever seen the total lack of emotional maturity and connection to the real world that people describe in China.

Whatever happened to trolling that cowboy hat guy, telling him he was a traitor to China for living in Canada? A lot of non-Americans have a hard time wrapping their heads around the concept of "how are you" or "what's up" as a form of greeting rather than a legitimate question. But it's an especially odd question coming from Chinese people whose typical greetings involve asking someone if they've eaten or where they're going or what they're "busy with doing."
