Shittily drawn would be enough of an insult.

Just roll with that, it works well.

there is literally no reason to engage in an honest debate about the nature of objectification because you're a grown-rear end man who thinks an ancient video clip somehow defends the stance you're taking to avoid confronting that maybe you have personal flaws that could be gradually corrected or acknowledged without shame, at least the elsa guy is consistently unapologetic about is lovely fetishes

They speak pretty well. They're entire scenes that everyone has access to. Media does this sometimes, and it's handy. The Simpsons episode Homer Badman for example predicted the future. Anyone can watch Homer Badman. I'd recommend it too.

Thank you for the comments, I'm seriously trying to improve my skills, but have a hard time seeing errors in my own work (I sometimes draw asymmetrical proportions that I can't see until someone points it out to me, so criticism helps me a lot).

As far as the rendering, I mostly did it zoomed into small portions of the picture (started with a small sketch then gradually doubled the canvas size occasionally as I added in more detail and refined it); I did try and zoom out and flip the canvas on occasion to see where parts were starting to have mismatched levels of shading or contrast, but I wasn't entirely able to clean it up and harmonize the different areas enough. The abs were actually even higher contrast earlier in the process - I tried to smooth them out to make them look more blended, but I guess it still needs to be blended in more, so thank you. I also like the tip about using a gradient for getting the overall shading to harmonize, that's something I feel like I should be kicking myself for not thinking of it myself. :shobon: The hair was actually painted from some photo references of real braids, I had been so obsessive about getting the uniformity and pattern of the braiding right, that I totally didn't catch that I had it shaded with the light coming from the wrong direction, that's totally a failure on my part. I've never worked in this style before (all my prior art I did as a teenager and young adult was pretty much comic-book style with relatively flat shading and strong black outlines, I've never tried to do realistic shading (or anything resembling traditional painting) before.

As far as 'boob plate' vs. practical, I'm aware that realistic women's plate armour essentially looks identical to men's plate armour, and had even started the initial sketch with a plain, un-contoured plastron, but I really hate covering up a bunch of fine muscles so I actually dialed the amount of armour coverage way back and put boobs on the chestplate, as I'm a big fan of the old school Boris Vallejo style of fantasy art and wanted to show off a muscular, slightly cheesecakey hero rather than have it be historically or practically accurate.

I'm still working up ideas for my next piece, and it will probably be either a character in more historically accurate, full-coverage armour, or wearing no armour at all, so either way should be more appealing to those who dislike cheesy impractical fantasy armour.

Thanks for being reasonable in response to my comments. I only wanted to share the story I got from looking at your character while I had no other context to why she was dressed up that way, as a design critique rather than a taste critique. I'm glad you're considering other subjects as well. Alongside a woman in reasonable armor, you might also consider a ridiculous oversexualized Vallejo-ish man for your next subject so you can practice idealized men's anatomy in pinup form, or! Whatever keeps you drawing and is fun, since you mention you're just getting back into practice. :unsmith:

One last thing thing to try: Work only in grayscale at first, then toss an Overlay layer on top to apply colors afterwards. It simplifies a lot of lighting and focus issues before they spiral out of control. Just keep going, not everything has to be a big piece, you can keep the momentum up by doing sketches and noodling with brushes too. Get your money's worth out of the tablet.

I don't use the overlay trick for colors, but after I get the initial composition worked out I like to create a half transparent layer set to multiply and very roughly draw out the shading over the whole piece. In the end I pick different colors for the shadows and refine them a lot, but that first shadow layer really helps keep me consistent with my light sources. I put an example below so you can see how I plan out my lighting, and how the finished piece turned out.

Also what GreatJob said, draw what makes drawing fun to you, but don't be afraid to try more difficult things because challenge is good.

I am drawing 31 witches this month. Here's the first one.

That was just a real, real bummer of a rolling with the punches post

I will be completely sincere and try to help by saying if you keep writing off everyone criticism of your subject matter as being overly sensitive pc bullshit you will be stagnating yourself, that's a defense mechanism that people use in every field of entertainment and its always bad. A large section of people will not be able to relate to your art because looking at it in an internet forum you post in feels like looking at a really sleazy picture in a gallery and the artist is standing next to you jerking off and the picture is of someone who looks kinda like you but in a really humiliating grotesque scenario

Like I'm curious if you at all understand why people view your work differently than other erotic art, do you understand why one thing is objectifying and lacking artist merit while something else isn't, people very quickly explained why that guy talking and loving south park are terrible arguments for your position and even though you keep asking people to explain their stances and be honest you totally blow off the people who explain why your reasoning is flawed

Every time I take the time to make a long lovely sincere post like this in an art thread trying to help someone they either stop posting completely or start sending me angry pms so I'm excited to see how this goes
