Does Kaine have much debating experience? I know he's been a good politician, and he's just generally a good guy, but will this translate to a winning debate? Pence is a god drat moron and a horrible person, but he's also been a politician for a long time, so I don't think he'll be as vulnerable or off-message as Trump.

I just don't want Kaine to put out a losing performance.

It's just gonna be two boring guys volleying their party-line talking points back and forth, for an audience a fifth the size of the Presidential debate's.

Regardless of who wins on points, there's unlikely to be any major gaffes or gotcha moments of the type that could make waves in the broader campaign.

The 2008 and 2012 VP debates had way more weight to them than this, and those still probably didn't matter

Only way for the VP debate to matter would be for Pence to have some kind of Trump-related outburst and/or decide to walk off the stage shouting "I've had enough of this poo poo!"

In 2012 you had the Ryan plan so the VP mattered for the Serious People, in 2008 you had Palin obviously. This year it's ultra-conservative idiot vs. veteran Democratic politician. It'll be fine and no one will care.

2008 was interesting because there I think the Dems were trying so hard for the VP debate to actually NOT matter. There was nothing they could do to make Palin look worse -- Biden just needed to bite his tongue long enough to not inadvertently increase sympathy for her. I suspect 2008 required far more coaching for Biden than 2012.

So just vote, get your ticket (if your place does that), plug it in to fry the machine, remove the stick, turn in your ticket and go.

No one is watching you over your shoulder when your voting. The next person to see that machine will be another voter after you've left and they'll just see a black screen. It'll take them forever to figure out what's wrong.

Yes, but when you go to vote, they check your ID and your address, have you sign your name in an electoral roll to make sure a registered voter is making a vote, complete with time-date stamps, then you can have access to a voting machine. They might not pick up on it immediately, but a time of failure filtered by a time of who had access to the machine means there's going to be a police officer and maybe some FBI men at your door by the time you get home just to ask questions.

Speaking of which, Gov. Abbott is using the possibility of a Clinton win in Texas to scare up donor dollars

quote:

On Monday, one of the most prominent Republicans in Texas has a warning for supporters that Texas could go blue this election.

Gov. Greg Abbott is sounding the alarm, citing recent poll numbers.

Democrats couldn't be happier, especially because the email from Abbott to supporters wasn't meant to be seen publically. It was sent to the governor's donors, and now Democrats are sensing a real opportunity to push ahead.

Anyone who knows anything about Texas politics knows Texas is a solid red. Although, polls have been showing Hillary Clinton running very close to Donald Trump in Texas.

The sobering email from Abbott is giving legitimacy to the possibility Texas could vote Democrat this year.

In the email, Abbott asks for donations to keep Texas red and get Republicans elected to Congress and state and local races.

Although the governor didn't respond to KENS 5’s for comment on this story, he made similar remarks when he was in San Antonio on Saturday, campaigning for Republican Congressman Will Hurd.

He's in a tough race with Democrat Pete Gallego.

“If we're going to get people to turn out and vote, we have to go door to door, person to person, explaining to them why this election is so important,” Governor Abbott said on Saturday.

The governor's email cites a Washington Post-Survey Monkey poll showing Clinton one point ahead of Donald Trump in Texas.

It’s the second poll showing a Clinton lead in the Lone Star State.

Survey Monkey

But, Texas Dems have been quick to let on that Trump is dragging the Republican Party down.

quote:

“Any other Republican would be winning by at least 10 points in the state of Texas, but it's Donald Trump,” said Manuel Medina, the Bexar County Democratic Party chairman who’s optimism is fed by raw data. “We have more than 1 million voters registered in Bexar County for the first time in the history of Bexar County. And you look at where they're registering at, and they're registering from places that traditionally vote democrat. It's younger people, it's Hispanic people, it's women.”

A third poll by Texas Lyceum shows Hillary Clinton within striking distance of Donald Trump, down just one point among registered voters.

The last time Texas voted Democratic was in 1976 for Jimmy Carter.

The whole waxing nostalgia for the supposed halcyon days of civility and compromise in politics by liberals and centrists is incredibly silly. There used to be civility and compromise because all the politicians used to be old white dudes who only really concerned themselves with old white dude problems, at best paying lip service to other people's problems mattering. We don't have that any more because increasingly, non-white people, LGBT people, and women have a voice in politics and white people are incapable of being civil with them, and compromise is impossible when the baseline stakes are "treat me as a human being, or not." The era people pine for is never coming back.

I expect Alabama to quickly adopt an amendment to the state constitution removing a mandatory retirement age from the state supreme court.

Note that in Alabama the state constitution gives the state legislature wide-ranging powers to meddle directly with certain (majority minority) counties, and for this reason it's the longest constitution in the world, because it's full of hundreds of tiny and very specific amendments to gently caress black people and their right to local democracy over.

I wonder how close the vetting for questions and questioners for the second debate is.

Gallup ostensibly has a selection of undecided voters that the moderators will then screen and interview before being allowed on national television. My two worries are:

1) What kind of people will we find in the sample of undecideds, at this point?
2) How easy would it be for a determined alt-righter to make their way to the debate and ask an unscreened tin-foil conspiracy question or something amazingly rude from Clinton in an attempt to throw her off?

The second one seems like a reach to me, but I hope they prepare for "audience member goes completely nuts" because you can't react to that the same way you can to Trump spouting nonsense. Hopefully unless Clinton responds in kind the story out of it would be "crazy person ruins debate", not "Clinton is taken by surprise by a man of the people."
