Since the thread's been talking about objectification for the last two pages i figure i'd throw my two cents in. I will admit that my base thought pattern when drawing women tends to be a bit too sexualized, i know that's problematic. so what i try to do is diversify the look, body type, skin tone, facial features etc. I'm a 100% positive It's made me a better artist.

I don't think the goal should be realism. But i do think it's a good idea for art to be more representational. it means characters can stand out more and their design says more about them.

You know I agree with what you've said but I have to say its really weird to hear coming from someone with a Widowmaker avatar. Cause that character seems like the perfect example of a boring sexualized design that was made to appeal primarily to men.

VVV The fact that she was kidnapped and brainwashed into becoming that character kind of removes all her agency though. If it wasn't for that part I wouldn't find the character so creepy.

I'll let her speak for herself, and you have a point, BUT Widowmaker is a classic femme fatale archetype character who owns her sexuality in addition to being there for eye candy (which is also true!). In my opinion, Overwatch is a good example of how to do a sexy woman character better, especially considering she's one of several women in the game, most of which represent a broader range of archetypes (even if they are all pin-up cuties in their own ways).

Overwatch is the game that lets you play as a badass middle-eastern mom sniper, after all.

I was saving this point for a later argument

But then I think she's in the same boat with men as she is a lesbian.

I mean, to go back to the robot game, like, that character literally doesn't have face. It's literal objectification.

I think it's cute. There are 3 things I would concentrate on.

Rule of thirds: place the eyes at the top third. Your pose already works itself out when you scale it up based on the eyes at that spot. Just a bit of space above and below the figure (in this case that counts the umbrella)

I extended the door outward after centering the figure so that it would be framed evenly on both sides.

Start putting down darks from there, and remember to place them around the image to tie it together. I would personally also make the mat in front of her knees dark so that she is grounded to the bottom of the image, but that's personal choice. It's also technically correct to make it very dark there, but do what you like.

edit: my tablet died in the middle of this crit lol wtf

edit2 fixed. The USB cable had worn connectors and a new cable works just fine.

I like how the fandom took widowmaker, a pretty dumb character, and made her extremely good, and gay.

she also has smaller boobs as far as video game ladies go and they look like mine and I enjoy that  I hate when people draw her with big ol titties it's very no bueno

c'mon, the guy's art just straight up doesn't totally 'get' anatomy anyway. I can't think of many instances where the characters look 'correct'. I don't know if One Piece is the best place to look.
Also, is it exactly a great point to try and go with japanese artists on this subject? That's a waaaaay different culture and the way they... well, everything, doesn't exactly vibe with western mentality. We could probly do better to pick from european artists if you wanna cross borders.

Scribblehatch

Yes, it's her outfit from Strong World, a movie where everyone is tacked with this ludicrously garish outfit. Look up some of the others. That image itself was someone's tracing of it.

As for the comic itself. 19 pages a week.

Those female figures you're seeing are a matter of creating a high-volume story quickly. He can do it quickly from memory without referring to a model sheet. It's no different from the cylindrical shoulders in Jojo that kinda makes them all look like a bunch of action figures. All of the main characters have these goofy wheel shoulders. Otherwise their output would be slower.

the thing I like about the overwatch women's designs is that even though widowmaker and tracer are both skinny they still have differences in their body types. all the ladies are varied and cover a fairly wide spectrum which is rare and nice to see

lol yeah as we all know having to make art fast makes you draw all your women like horrible barbie abominations

and oh no I chose a vector art tracing of a photo that somehow invalidates it somehow...except she looks exactly the same in all the other pics I posted. I wasn't even talking about her outfit I was talking about her proportions. which they kept ridiculous for the movie despite not having the time constraints of the manga

I went to meet a friend at an anime convention cuz she was doing an artist alley booth and her art is pretty much always this sorta thing:

She was even selling this as one of her prints.

Like yeah it's not totally correct but it's what she wants to draw. She's doing something she enjoys and what other guys and girls like enough to buy. I have no right to tell her to stop that. What gives you the right to think you should do that?

E: yeah tracer is actually a good candidate for being directly a barbie doll. her midsection is rediculously thin.

19 pages a week.

Look at any given chapter of One Piece and take note of the unusually high panel-to-page ratio. And how dense each panel tends to be.

The quality of the artstyle is going to suffer for decisions like these, but they're decisions made very well. People connect with One Piece, despite it's length.
