I mean her midsection isn't exactly far off from the old barbies really?
Also they sell her character on her rear end and even the victory pose change they did seemed like it made her rear end even more prominent.

Look at any given chapter of One Piece and take note of the unusually high panel-to-page ratio. And how dense each panel tends to be.

The quality of the artstyle is going to suffer for decisions like these, but they're decisions made very well. People connect with One Piece, despite it's length.

Maybe if he made less pages it would be a better comic, like that's not a good excuse. And yeah the male characters are all exaggerated in ways that are different and unique and he doesn't worry about keeping those liberties within the realm of what's still within shooting distance of conventionally attractive comic book character of that gender.

I thought that was real obvious honestly.

E: I've never read One Piece but isn't a ton of the focus on more of the other characters that aren't the ladies?

Don't these things kind of strengthen the idea that women are not being represented well, when he doesn't give a poo poo enough about them to draw them well or make them important to the story?

Don't worry about it.
I don't like design choices made for female characters in both overwatch and one piece. i think you can also like and even enjoy media that has poor choices in female character design, but all of this relies on acknowledging the problems and when you are control of the media (like say ur own art) working to move past that. fixing problems can even be done with media you don't have direct control over, like Troposphere's appreciation of what the overwatch fandom has done to resuscitate black widow's character. This also requires someone to recognize female objectification is real and be aware of what male gaze is in this 2016th year of our anime jesus because seriously wtf.

Why should we consider Christopher Hitchens to be an authority on this matter.

Why does Oda's schedule mean he can only draw one female body type but vary the types of male bodies.

Answer these two questions without being a dismissive shithead about them.

you can enjoy something and also acknowledge its flaws and that is something you have to do often if you want cool strong female characters doing cool things, unfortunately

I have a lot of issues with overwatch re: bad character design choices but it's so rare to find cool ladies with various body types and races being badass that I'm willing to forgive them. blizzard also seems to be listening to criticism(with the inclusion of an older woman character) which is nice

Humanity used to have plays in which the death of a character meant an actor straight up got killed on stage. now we're at a point where they don't even need actors to make a story about death except for voices.

Things continue to get better every day by the way of progress but i don't think small people can change a problem that's caused by entities significantly bigger than us if it continues to sell.

that's not female gaze though, the entire commercial is structured around how powerful and strong deodorant makes those men and look at how women watch them play beach soccer. The closest it comes to female gaze is the last bit with the guy standing up and stretching backwards, but even that's done from a downward angle, as if the viewer is on his/her knees before the deodorant-empowered abs

like you make comics, so you must understand how blocking and framing a body conveys certain things about the character and what the audience is supposed to think about the character

I can answer only one of those questions because tbh I have no idea who the gently caress Christopher Hitchens is or why he matters.

I don't know enough about One Piece to say much but if Oda draws dudes more and has them more focused on in the story then I get this feeling that he
A: doesn't know how to draw women well, which is actually a problem with some manga artists in general which leads to
B: he may not enjoy drawing them and just wants to draw goofy characters doing goofy things.
C: maybe even both.

Not being an expert on that series cuz I don't watch or read it, but the scenes i HAVE seen are almost exclusively focused on making a tense scene with some really silly bullshit happening. I could totally believe that he just doesn't know how to or just doesn't enjoy drawing women. It's even a possibility that publishers can straight up force artists to do different things or make more characters to bring in more readers. Akira Toriyama considers the entire Buu saga non-canon because he was writing a bunch of these scenarios for Piccolo, but publishers pushed him to change the stories to instead focus on Vegeta, a character he openly dislikes.

You could say that, but there's actually another scenario entirely that could be true: Liking the actress beforehand and then being adamant about them playing a character.

Yoshiyuki Tomino had a major obsession with a specific VA back in the day, and he made a fairy character for Aura Battler Dunbine that he really wanted her to play the role for. well, he wanted to keep her on board for more of his work, so when L-Gaim comes along he made pretty much the EXACT same fairy character just so he could get her to play the role again.

I think the main problem is that fitting the "rules" manga artists use to draw women that are obviously not men makes it really drat hard in his style, given that all of the faces are masculine. Usually this goes the other way, with all the male characters looking feminine. I have a few art reference books from Japanese artists and every one of them has a passage that effectively says LEARN HOW TO DRAW WOMEN FIRST THEN IF YOU WANT TO DRAW A MAN JUST DRAW AN UGLY WOMAN.

Also holy poo poo when I clicked on this thread I didn't realize it was going to be to a 4 page derail about how to draw boobs without insulting anyone. Good work guys.

Cartoons and Comics aren't exactly treated as high art and it's a bit easier to get in those areas and do poo poo. (unless you're after making a big name Disney thing in which case good loving luck lol) The fields might never be treated as seriously as live action media, and that's a little sad.
When you talk about this you REALLY gotta look at Hollywood and live action entertainment media, which is a loving nightmare in every way about objectification, misogyny, rape, and whatever else you wanna go by. It's a really big mess that barely ever changes or can be changed without being dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Even with everything happening right now they still aren't really trying to change, and THAT is aggravating as hell.
