This puts me under the impression that their friendship was going down the shitter anyway.

This sounds like some sort of strange American thing I'm not aware of where coupon = grave insult?

Then again, where I live you can buy a book of coupons for various local restaurants and attractions with part of the proceeds going toward charity, so there less of a negative connotation?

Alternatively... What if I'm a horrifying goony goon and my partner has been silently cringing all this time, too polite to say anything?!

We have those too, and people go to restaurants all the time using Groupons and other huge discounts. Some people don't using coupons because they don't like to look cheap, but I think Solice has it right.

I have a friend who would come to restaurants and not eat anything, then go to McDonald's on the way home. We drew the line at him bringing outside food to the restaurants, but other than that it was fine.

Bingo. Like Switchback said earlier, it has more to do with their friendship than the bill. If they weren't both terrible shits, they could navigate it easily and a coupon would barely be a blip on the radar.

Thrifty is great. Thrifty is reasonable. Playing within your budget can be difficult but is a necessary thing to do. I doubt that's what's happening here.

I had a friend in high school who was a total miser and it became too much to deal with. She was always willing to "share" as long as it was one direction. She wasn't a mooch, she had a compulsion problem. She'd tell you how much money she'd hoarded from skipping lunch and pocketing her lunch money while sharing your lunch. She'd begrudgingly go out to eat with you (you couldn't eat at her house unless her mom was home to feed you because she hoarded food, had no prob eating at my house) and order the cheapest thing with water and expect to share your drink at minimum, she'd go to the mall and shoplift, she'd brag about her straight A's while trying to cheat off my tests, she texted my husband the night of my wedding because she was mad he broke up with her months before we started dating

What I'm saying is, there's more to the story.

No, but saying you're worth $11 billion dollars based on $1 billion in non-liquid assets and a $10 billion estimated valuation of your name, means that he definitely doesn't have as much money or assets as he claimed to have earned in the last 20 years.

On his financial disclosure forms to the FEC he reported that his total worth in just over $11 billion, that his name was worth $3.5 billion, and that many of his hotels and properties were using a higher valuation estimate than they would normally be assessed, because a "Trump Hotel" is worth much more than a regular hotel.

So, it is all self-reported and very vague.

She mentions that she literally never goes out to eat unless she has a coupon or is getting a discount, so it's probably this. A coupon is fine. Regularly using coupons is fine. Being one of those extreme couponers is fine. Changing your entire lifestyle so that you never do anything unless you have a coupon is too much for most people.

On a lighter note, this comment was pretty great:

Hello, aircraft mechanic here. I'm going to be showing up at SFO on the 17th for a job with an airline. I don't have some predisposition to "fall in love with cities." I prefer being far, far away from cities. But my career track prefers the opposite, and professional passions win over the passing distaste.
As of now, my plan is to live in the back of my 2007 Nissan Xterra with a couple of bins, a couple bags of clothes, and my tools for work. The airline will let me stay indefinitely in their parking lot, but there's no water/power, and you are not allowed to loiter outside your camper, RV, or in my case, sleeping-truck. I have a butane stove I can use with windows down.
Financial stats:
I will have about $1,000 left over by the time I start work
I will earn approximately $2,200/mo (EDIT: This is NET income, what I will earn in-pocket.)
My fixed expenses (pre-housing) are $1,400/mo.
Does anyone have some advice, suggestions, etc? I'm open to any and all ideas.
Thanks,
TFH
EDIT: My calculated income is actually ~$2,600 after taxes, but I am assuming Union dues are a big monthly chunk - mostly because I have no earthly idea how much they'll actually be.

This guy is screwed but I honestly feel bad for him. He's gotten himself a job, he's got a plan (a dumb one, but a plan anyhow), and it doesn't rely on some kind of magical "investment" coming out of nowhere or a get-rich scheme or exploiting anyone else. His plan isn't going to work, but maybe he can roomie-up with another airport worker, or get to park his vehicle at their place, or something.

He was smart/educated enough to get a job. Good for him, I wish him the best despite his foolish plan.

I'm 26 and since I started driving I've been driving clunkers. My current car is a '92 Buick LeSabre. I've put 4 times it's worth (assuming it was in good condition--it's not) into repairs over the last 4 years, easily. It's got no horn, it's held together with duct tape, and it's ugly. But it runs well enough. I've been looking at the upcoming Tesla Model 3. It's 35k and it comes out at the end of next year. No more gas, better for the environment, autopilot mode, high quality and a working horn. I want it, and I'm determined to make it happen.

My financial situation:
About 8k in credit card debt
6k in student loans (not accumulating interest atm)
No savings
In school for Radiology tech with about 3 years left to go. Projected yearly salary on graduation: 50-70k a year
Currently a Massage Therapist pulling a little over $1400 a month (month-month varies due to the nature of the work)

Monthly bills:
$100 for car insurance (basic)
$120 for cell
~$100 in subscription fees (Netflix, Hulu, audible, spotify)
$80 on student loans
$200 in credit card payments (I do most of my purchases through credit to take advantage of various cash back offers, and I usually pay much more than the minimum on every card)
$20-$40 a week on gas
~$100 on expenses for pets
I'm living with family and they're covering utilities and rent.

I can pick up a few extra hours at my job. It's a tough line to walk though, because a repetitive stress injury from pushing myself could result in me being unable to work. I'm thinking of picking up another 5 hours, which opens up between $300 and $600 dollars a month (depending on how well booked I get). On top of that, if I cut back on expenses (hobbies and the like) I could definitely be saving up a lot more money. Last month I only spent $300 on food because I mostly make my own meals and I paid with some using my cash tips (which usually go to hobby expenses and my gas tank).

Between cutting down on non-essentials and picking up extra hours I could potentially save up between $900 and $1200 a month, realistically I'd say that $800 and $1000 is more likely.

So here's the question: The car is 35k for the most basic model, and I have roughly 12 months to prepare. How do I most effectively use this money towards the purchase of this new car? I'm assuming that getting an auto loan is the best course of action here, but I have no experience with auto financing. My credit score is about 650 right now, mostly because I have almost all my credit tied up. If I pay off a lot of this credit I could potentially increase my credit score, which would get me better terms on the auto loan. Or, I could save it up and put the money on the downpayment, directly lowering the monthly payments. I definitely don't want to be in a situation where I'm crippled by paying off a car loan. I'd like to pay as little monthly on the car loan as is possible, and I don't mind stretching it out over a longer period (and paying more total) if it can give me extra breathing room on monthly bills. I'm also aware that I'll have to increase my insurance cost with the new car, I'm estimating $250 monthly on that (although I'm not sure if that's realistic or not)
tldr: "I'm too cheap to get the horn fixed on my current car, but want to throw money at the waiting list for a Tesla. Also I'm still in school. And I'm 8k in credit card debt, but justify it with cash back."

It's near impossible to break into the mortuary business unless you know someone/are related. My friend went through that after college and it took her 4 years to find a job in the field and it started out paying less than what she was making at the time to boot because they wanted to "try her out" for 6 months before they started really paying her.
