The idea is that "No, you see, we're not racists, the LIEBERALS are the real racists!"

It's a common trope amongst the alt-right-o-sphere that you can, in the same article, accuse the left of being racists and simultaneously express the opinion that black people should be deported from the US. I think the underlying rationalization of it is that you can't not be racist, therefore, people who express opinions like "I think black people are people and deserve to be treated the same as me" are the real racists because they're lying. :psyduck:

I'm kind of getting the impression that a lot of people haven't really bothered to learn the actual definitions of words, and just sort of form their own associations on them. So in this case, "racist" turns out to be something like "says Bad People things about race," rather than "displays racial prejudice" or whatever other, more sane definition normal people use.

That, and I think it's a side effect of the "colorblind" approach to race relations: if you acknowledge race at all, that makes you racist and you lose the game. I know it was pretty heavily implicit when I was a kid, before people started realizing that trying to ignore the problem did not, in fact, make it go away.

Probably a bit of both; my impression of a lot of alt-right types is that they're less interested in actually understanding problems than in finding an "I Win" button for arguments. (Granted, that's not solely their province, and is part of why parts of tumblr also live in Crazy rear end in a top hat Land.)

Yeah, the review is annoyingly inexact for those of us who have nerded on this one to the point of needing a molecular laser to Julienne the hairs in question, and particularly the bit where it puts EY forward as the basilisk's proposer or proponent. But I did like how it put EY as a proponent of the urge to rightness that leads to Moldbuggian idiocy.

I don't dislike the review overall either. I think it's mostly just that a significant chunk of my job has consisted of trying to explain the difference between various Protestant sects in the early modern period to 18-22 year olds only to read (in tests, papers, etc.) about "the church" as the sole source of religious authority in any given region. Which isn't what the review's doing at all but this theology stuff's become a bit of a thing for me because of that.

What on earth did History and Philosophy do to these people that they feel the need to so thoroughly abuse and debase them as both words and concepts? Does the resentment of arts and humanities run so deep that entire fields of academia must be ground underfoot in their interminable, petty and bloody minded culture war?

It was Heinlein, and that always brings up the uncomfortable fact that he was much harder to pin down to some stupid dogma than people who want to claim him for their side want him to have been.

Weirdo, yes, but also a sexist creep but I suppose that came with the times.

On the other hand any author that can go from libertarians on the moon to military service meaning citizenship to the oldest man ever that gathers a harem and then uses time travel to go back and have sex with his own mom (oh and the time travel mechanism exists only because other characters from another entirely unrelated book figured out that they were in a fictional universe and just switched fictions) is going to be hard to pin down.

Same.

In a way, being a nazi would require more intellectual honesty than I think either Rev or Scott have. They don't like non far-right spaces and places at all, but they don't want to have to admit that they're kinda far-right because they still have some vague sense nazis are bad, even if they get angry when prog sjw regressive leftists say the same thing.

Well he thinks that humanistic inquiry and the social sciences are unrigorous, as articulated in his book The Blank Slate. He on the other hand is a great methodological scientist doing neuroscience with his psychology Ph.D. and making book-length arguments about how the enlightenment was a unified movement that made like an international superteam with English, Scottish, and French philosophers joining together like voltron to kill superstition.

I'd still take him over the usual hordes of small-dicked boobs we talk about here who think that the enlightenment was a jewish conspiracy to make white women not want to sleep with them or whatever.

I don't have anything on that specifically, but Pinker's work on violence is incredibly terrible even by the low standards of people who consider themselves "public intellectuals." In his book Better Angels of Our Nature, he double-counts death tolls from archaeological sites because he doesn't realize he's using the same sites twice, uses ludicrously inflated statistics to determine medieval murder rates, thinks that the fake torture devices invented in the 18th/19th century are real medieval artifacts, and in general is terrible at just about every aspect of historical research and analysis.

Historians HATE him! One weird trick to make up complete bullshit to sell a bunch of books!

The extra funny thing is that Scott cited Better Angels of Our Nature to criticize Moldbug's everything-has-been-getting-worse-over-the-past-few-centuries narrative.

(Pinker's view is probably closer to the truth than Moldbug's, but still.)
