What if, instead of insomnia, I just had to fight an orc every night? Id probably get better at fighting, also orcs get like only a +4 to strength or some poo poo, that's nothing.

Allen Wren posted:Michael Haneke is just a sadist as a filmmaker, and the audience is his victim. His thing is basically "you enjoy movies as stories? here is why this makes you a bad person." Oh man, I had heard of that movie and it in absolutely no way surprises me that it was made by the same guy. I actually find it pathetically hysterical that he made Funny Games twice. Like it makes me want to call him a nerd and laugh in his face because it's like he had a temper tantrum yelling "no you guys you're not getting it!" when nobody cared when it was originally released, so he made it again and still nobody cared because it's a lovely movie. If I did turn it off it wouldn't have been out of disgust over the subject matter but out of boredom because he couldn't even make a torture porn movie interesting cause he's a total wuss. Like it's the kind of movie that if I was watching it with him I would probably find a way to fall asleep during it because I think that's the reaction that would make him the maddest and I would just want to troll him. Anyway, I only watched it because I made my list by scouring internet lists for psychological horror movies and someone somewhere put that on it. I'm actually enjoying going into my list almost entirely blind, although some of the movies have definitely been duds, I'm happy to be watching more movies. In the Mouth of Madness was kinda meh. Nothing about it really grabbed me. It wasn't bad, but It could have used a few more rewrites or different takes or something. A solid C+ movie.

Funny Games being made twice is less him yelling you don't get it and him just doing a funny goof

Saying nobody didn't cared when it was released is also kinda completely untrue and the film is talk about academically a bit. I mean you can dislike it. I don't really have much of an opinion on it myself but whatever.

It was talked about in the story of film which is a documentary series I recommend to the thread.

Snooze Cruise posted:Saying nobody didn't cared when it was released is also kinda completely untrue and the film is talk about academically a bit. By nobody I mean actual people going to see it, which almost nobody did. It didn't even make back half of its budget. I'm not talking about people who are overanalyze movies to feel superior who I'm sure love it because it makes them feel better than the masses. Snooze Cruise posted:Funny Games being made twice is less him yelling you don't get it and him just doing a funny goof From what I've read since watching this movie because I was so curious what the hell the deal with this garbage was, I believe that he would say "haha I was just doing a funny goof" while actually be silently seething. I've never watched a movie that had such contempt for its audience.

You wanna talk about a movie with contempt for its audience, its actors, and everyone involved in its production? The Visit is horrifying in a way that isn't even fun ironically or in a "haha let's watch this horrible disgusting movie" way. Shyamalan has fallen far.

Speaking of people who reuse stuff in movies the story of film has a great story from Paul Schrader where he talks about copying wholesale the ending of Pickpocket for either Light Sleeper or American Gigolo (I can't remember which came out first) as a tribute, and then making the later movie he realized it work better for that so he did it again.

Snooze Cruise posted:Wren forgot to mention that the funny games director also made a sweet little romance film about an old couple. It's adorable and charming. Also in the mouth of madness is a solid b flick. It's dumb but the effects are cool and the ending owns. And the soundtrack is so 90s it hurts. Quidthulhu posted:I watched Hellraiser tonight. Don't. It's nothing but diminishing returns. Also yeah it's kinda supposed to be really weird and rapey. Poison Mushroom posted:You wanna talk about a movie with contempt for its audience, its actors, and everyone involved in its production? It was totally dumb and the characters were all terrible but I was drinking and it was exactly the movie I wanted to see. For a second I thought you were talking about the visitor

Haneke is extremely sadistic in terms of how he treats his audience, yes. He has some amazing ideas, in general. White Ribbon is a lot more tame, and Amore is his finest and most accessible work. If you like off beat movies that aren't so sadistic, check out Certified Copy, a film not by Haneke. I have recommendations for days.

Spike Lee's version was pretty bad, honestly. The original is OK, though I don't think it's aged very well (or I'm just older.) Lady Vengeance is superior.
