I remember reading she's 20 at the start of DB, so she would be about 28 by the end of it (I think everything through to the end of the Red Ribbon Army is about two years, then there's three years before the 22nd Tournament, then a further three years before the 23rd). Then there's five years between DB and DBZ, one year between the Raditz fight and the Nappa and Vegeta fight, I think Namek probably covers another year, then there's about three years between the end of Namek and Freeza showing up on Earth with King Cold, another year (?) before the androids show up, then seven years between Cell and Buu. Not sure how long there's meant to be between Buu and BotG but it probably evens out to Mai being about 41.

There's a theory going around that the Namekians are actually descendants of the dragon god Zalama that created the Dragon Balls. Zalama created the Dragon Balls and then got mortally wounded in a fight with some other god or being. But before he died, he had a bunch of children that were called the Dragon People, who inherited his power. They were a powerful race and had mystical powers, some of them were even wizards. But many of them were also arrogant and prideful, and wanted to use the Dragon Balls to rule the universe. But others didn't want this, they felt the Dragon Balls should be used only for good. There was a huge civil war that nearly wiped all of the Dragon People out. Even though the good side won, they were kicked out of the heavens by the other gods (the Kaios) and went into the Lower Realm. After that they became a race of wanderers that wandered the universe until they found a little planet that they settled on, which became Planet Namek. Then they became a peaceful race of farmers who practiced a mystical pacifist religion. After this, they managed to create a new set of Dragon Balls that were much less powerful and had more checks on their power, so this was allowed by the gods. Only the best and most enlightened Namekians could learn the secret of creating Dragon Balls, and so they became known as the Dragon Clan. But there was still a dark strain of evil within the Namekians and those that succumbed to it became collectively known as the Demon Clan. Okay this isn't a theory it's just fanfiction that I made up.
