That feel when you blow your wad on the first fight expecting that to be it but then they hit you with another one after a cutscene with no warning or prep time and you half low hp and mp and you just accept your gonna have to do it again and its bullshit but then you mange to pull through anyways. So basically what you said but when you win

i learned playing all the DQ's last year that about the 1/3rd mark all debuffs stop affecting bosses and at 2/3rds they remove your buffs every other turn so i knew to depend on pure physical damage the whole game

yup I just fought that boss. Sap is a vital part of my boss stratagem too, luckily I was just able to to basically replace it with oomph this time. looking forward to the first time I get to drop a double sap + ( double if possible -- haven't tried yet) oomph + focus strength knuckle sandwich on a bitch

Do you need anything special to capture more than one monster, ive used that monster masher skill a bunch on guys I have one of already and it doesn't seem to work.

oh and 8 was harder too which iliked, the boss fights were close and the first time i played it i even died to the first guy cos i didnt give yangus herbs to hold. i havent risked dying once yet in 7

8 also didn't have the job system which made it harder to break, instead it had tension which was a a real fun risk/reward thing

tbh i don't like the job system that much but I like how DQ9 changed it to be level-based instead which was way more managable

still enjoying DQ7 a lot though, the, it helps that it's long enough that you really will fight a couple thousand battles unlike DQ6 which was normal sized but still required hundreds of fights

How'd you pull this off? Ultimate Sword/Oomph/Sap/build power type skill? My top is 500 just from oomph knuckle sandwiching bosses while leveling monster jobs

You need to move the monster you want to duplicate to a monster barn and then you can capture multiples of the same kind. The barns are next to the monster meadow entrance

I kind of like 6's because it forces you to commit to a class tree, you'll have one advanced vocation mastered by the endgame and most of those are good enough to carry you. Also you keep your skills so you don't feel like you're loving yourself over by reclassing if you really want Thin Air, Multiheal or Monster Mashers taming skills.

good point but that kinda leads into the question of "why bother with the class system instead of static progression" though, I think 8 hit a good balance where everyone has a clear specialty but there's room to mess around with different stuff

Yeah the vocation system is definitely imperfect, 8's system was pretty cool except for how you just had to just know to not spread yourself too thin. 9's was the best compromise though, but they should really do an FF5 system where endgame fodder trash gives more points than earlygame bosses.

During battle, each character in the party has the ability to attack, use items, or use magic and skills. New to Dragon Quest VIII is the tension system, which allows the player to choose the "Psyche Up" command for a character during battle.[13] This command allows the player to skip a character's turn in order to build "tension", making that character's next attack stronger. By using it multiple times in succession, the character's attack will do more damage.

Also the 3DS vers is coming next year, it's out in Japan already since last year?

The tension system is really cool and enemies have access to it too, so boss fights can get rough. VIII was actually a pretty tough game if you don't overlevel yourself on metal slimes

Only 48 more battles to get gladiator from level 7 to level 8 and then I can make Aishe a champion. And then I will tackle the post game dungeons, I think. I might need to find more mini medals to even unlock it which would be a pain

Basically every character can equip weapons based on their archetype and put points into the weapon tree as they level, as well as their "unique" skill tree (courage, sex appeal, ect) that give them increased attack power with those weapons and skills. So if you put enough points into Courage (hero's unique) you get unique skills like Zap and Omniheal, swords gives you falcon slash and miracle slash, scythe gives stealing stuff and multitarget instant death, ect. There's not a lot of weapon overlap, so you can have one character change depending on what you focus on, but characters never stop learning spells normally so it's more like a supplement to their innate talents instead of 3 having characters be their vocations or 6/7 relying on vocations to teach skills.

Sorry for the effort post.

the twist is that some status effects/skills can cut tension altogether making the turns spent on it wasted and almost all later bosses will have access to these types of skills, but a high tension'd attack does a TON of damage(and the bosses canceling it doesn't happen so frequently as to make tension worthless) so it makes a fun risk/reward dynamic.

also the protagonist literally goes super saiyan at 100% tension

everyone can go ssj4. also each character gets 350-ish skill points to allocate into different abilities. usually 2 weapons, a character specific skill, and "fisticuffs" which everyone gets. it takes 100 points to master a skill, and u unlock new stuff by dumping skill points into them.

well, you can also grind an item to get free skill points like seeds, but it takes forever.
