I don't understand the rush to predict that someone is going to gently caress up. What's wrong with waiting for them to gently caress up? Then if they don't gently caress up it's fine. If they do gently caress up then you can point it out when they do.

It is okay to walk that back, you don't have to double down just because other people, who are also looking at it critically btw, are telling you to chill and maybe give it another 20 pages or so before you firmly toss it in the 'another bad white saviour trope comic' bin. Hi, since you apparently missed it in the post you quoted, I'm not doubling down on anything. My argument basically can be boiled down to "as an african american this is kind of offensive and hopefully it gets better because it doesn't look very good so far". So uh, no I'm not walking back anything and trying to patronize me for saying that is kind of incredibly lovely of you.

Why does HW only have so many "slots to give away"? Is there a quality threshold they want to maintain? Or like, a certain "brand" they want to establish by having comics of certain genres? OR WILL THE HONEYCOMB COLLAPSE WITH TOO MANY COMICS? They host my site because I was previously using dreamhost which promptly exploded as soon as I started getting hiveworks traffic, they manage my advertising and cut me a cheque every month, they sell my books at cons I can't make it to (so pretty much anything over the Canadian border since I hate flying and I need to renew my passport, which I can't because I'm about to have a pending legal name change), they sometimes throw me contract work for graphic design, I have an open offer to do a piece for slipshine for whenever I actually have the time to set aside to do a twenty-something page paid porn comic, they pay to format and edit my books for printing, they let me know when other members are in need of emergency guest art or comics (it's a nice traffic bump, and it feels nice to do something for someone who is currently having an emergency), they've hooked me up with awesome people who have landed me paid anthology and design work, they have a really great resource base if you're looking to make literally any kind of product and aren't sure who to go with for price/quality and their slack office is a really nice place for great feedback from people who aren't internet randos who might not actually know what they're talking about. They also have an online store that I should really put some content into now that I actually have time for that. Basically they take away a lot of the worry I'd have otherwise and make it possible for me to support myself completely using ad revenue and patreon, which lets me do this full time, which in turn lets me write off so, so many wonderful things on my taxes, like art supplies, computer repairs/replacements and things like a portion of my internet/heating/electric bills based on the percentage of the square footage my office takes up in our house. So, it does a lot of things for me personally, but I imagine that much larger comics are getting much less out of it in terms of everything but money. Hiveworks only has so many slots to 'give away' because contracts, while renewed every year by hive, aren't necessarily renewed on by the authors--people try to do webcomics, but have personal emergencies or decide that they wanna try to go it alone, or, in cases like Oskar, were doing both webcomic work and work for slipshine and now does work solely for slipshine. There's always a chance that when Hive says 'do you want to renew?' that someone will pass on it, and that opens up space. I don't know about this second part personally, so don't quote me on it, but I imagine that comics that can't fulfill what was outlined in their contracts (they drop their update schedule down without discussing it or disappear without a word or an update for months, are difficult to work with, etc.) probably get dropped, which also make space. It isn't that Hive will collapse with too many comics as much as it is that integrating a single new comic is a lot of work intially--if it's an existing property, it might mean re-hosting it, redirecting domain A-records, making sure all comments and reader interactions are transferred over properly for a potentially large archive, chasing after artists to create advertisements for their specs in multiple sizes, etc., and if it's a property that was pitched to Hive before it was actually made, a website will need to be designed from scratch, aggressive pre-advertisement usually happens, ads need to be made, etc., as well, but with nothing to work off as a base like there would be if it was an existing comic hosted elsewhere. The bulk of that work is done by COO Isabelle Meloncon and her assistant, Audrey Redpath, and they employ someone to design and transfer websites as well as someone to do troubleshooting and tech support. COO Jo Stillwell mainly does the advertising wizardry, and I think they have someone who manages the store, but I'm not sure if that person is a different person or if that all falls to Audrey. It's a lot of work for them initially to get a comic set up, but once it is, hopefully the amount of work on hive's end drops off--I usually have to contact someone in tech support maybe once a year when someone changes all of the FTP passwords for one security reason or another and forgets to tell me they did it because most authors don't generally request FTP access, and that's about it, unless I'm getting readers telling me that they're experiencing intrusive ads that pull them into the google play store on their phones or something. Twenty seems to currently be the magic number for 'how many comics can the team get up and smoothly running staggered out over the course of a few months without literally working themselves to death', and that number might change in the future depending on whether they decide to hire more people or any of those people I just listed off get more or less busy, since Isabelle is the illustrator for Namesake and a bunch of other small things and she and Audrey are launching Mary's Monster soon with Hiveworks' support. As far as finding things that fit with their brand, it's partially that, but the comics chosen are chosen by people who themselves write and illustrate comics, but they also READ and support a lot of comics. I think most of it boils down to 'is this pitch or existing comic something that catches our interest, and is its art good and consistent--do they have the time they'd need to be able to keep on this'--sometimes the deciding factor is absolutely 'is this a comic that we want to read, do we enjoy this, and do we think other people will also enjoy this?' ConanThe3rd posted:I didn't mean to take sides on that besides what I said about DoA. Honestly the comparison between HW and Channel Awesome does come off as a bit off to me and what happened to SD was just bum luck. Can I assume you actually meant Channelate by Ryan Hudson rather than Channel Awesome, which appears to be where all those Nostalgia Critic videos now live? I've heard people express similar sentiments, especially when they don't get in. I had someone who I suggested apply a couple years ago send me a scathing email about how they deserved to get in because their art was better than several comics that Hive hosts, but I think people who think that way are missing the bigger picture. First off, if a comic is already guaranteed to be making money, and isn't super offensive or anything like that, it's absolutely in Hive's best interest to pick them up. Art quality is irrelevant if boatloads of people are reading it every single day. Second, a lot of older Hive comics were not subjected to the same application process that new members are, in part because they actually needed some comics to be in on this for it to get started, partially because no one knew them and a lot of people they approached may have been suspicious (I was, initially) and partially because their current application process is the results of trial and error over the past five years. New members are getting the result of that hard work and experience when they apply and it is really attractive, so they apply in droves. The people that joined up five years ago like I did had to be cautiously approached rather than beaten away with a stick. I know of at least a few people who Hive approached who are still convinced that they're a big scam looking to steal the rights to their work despite the fact that they've been around for half a decade now and no such thing has happened. I guess what I'm saying is that when Hive opens submissions now, they can pick and choose the best fits for Hive. That doesn't necessarily mean art, because you can have beautiful art and a generic story that interests no one past the first chapter, but they are more likely to select really well drawn and written because they get so many really well drawn comics applying that it's just a matter of figuring out which ones are really interesting and whose authors don't look like they might burn out at the drop of a hat. They have that option now, whereas five years ago their options were limited to 'whose comics do we like, and do we think that they won't immediately tell us to gently caress off once they get our email.' shitpostmodern fucked around with this message at 02:50 on Oct 5, 2016 |

Never post while deliriously tired I guess! fwiw I have no idea what happened with Vibe, but after looking at his last update/twitter, I have to wonder if he burned out and him and Hive got into a disagreement over that. Hive hasn't retracted his hosting as of right now, and probably won't until they can help him move off site, but even if he leaves there's nothing in any of our contracts preventing him from continuing to work on it without hiveworks, so my best guess is that he can't or won't continue it for one personal reason or another, which means that Hive would need to drop him for not fulfilling his side of his contract. That really sucks, since his comic was so nice looking and seems to have had a lot of readers who will now be disappointed. :/

paradoxGentleman posted:I'm seriously considering rereading the entirety of Awful Hospital, because goddamn, I have no idea what the gently caress is going on and what Crash wants. To anyone else, here's a fun game - see how much of this you can read before going cross-eyed! The way Awful Hospital's version of reality seems to work is that everyone and everything can be treated as a discrete organism at the conceptual level, all with some degree of sentience. Most of the comic's goofy jargon is related to that idea in some way - stuff like "brachiation" and "sub-seething" and so on are all deliberately vague terms meant to describe how these different conceptual spheres work and how other people interact with them. The Hospital, for example, is an actual place, but it's also a concept, and can thus be "interrupted" by damaging it in such a way to make it like "less of a hospital." This is normally pretty difficult, since the facility is hard to damage and non-human entities in AH's universe are very hard to permanently kill, but if you, for example, should kill a member of Hospital staff and intern the body outside of the Hospital's "zone," like in the labyrinths beyond its walls, they straight-up cease to exist, and destabilize the Hospital as a result. There are also certain entities that can be vital to the existence of particular zones, and if they get dead, the entire zone falls apart immediately. Director Phage is suggested to be one of these. The Parliament of the Old Flesh, the story's chief villains, are the sentient and omniphobic remnants of a primordial organism that would just be super happy to re-incorporate all existing matter from all zones and concepts into themselves again and kill off whatever's left. To that end they've cultivated a virulent disease that's capable of infecting anything, from anything - like Crash says, it's the alpha-malady, something that can infect all of reality at a conceptual level and jump effortlessly from any possible vector. Fern's child is probably Patient Zero for the sickness, though there's still no hint if the Parliament infected him in the first place or if they're just exploiting his illness for their own ends. Crash, who already hated everyone and everything to begin with, was in the middle of an elaborate suicide plot using Jay. Since he's not allowed to kill himself directly on account of being a crucial component of the hospital's conceptual sphere, he's been egging on Jay's killing spree in hopes of unmaking enough staff to cause the whole place to fall apart at the seams. On top of that, when Fern came along, he was able to see that the constant advice and chatter from the Commenters has so badly eroded and compromised her personal, discrete concept that almost anything can just saunter right into her mind if it knows how, which Crash did, and then used her as a proxy to pop into Jay's and the Slob's minds as well. After what he's learned about the Parliament through the Slob's eyes (or, uh, eye), on top of his own growing sickness, he's set his plans on fast-forward and set an ultimatum for the Commenters to find a replacement for him and drop-and-swap him into the Hospital's mainframe, so he'll become a redundant existence and can finally die. He's just being a huge dick about it. Oxxidation fucked around with this message at 14:08 on Oct 5, 2016 |
