In a weird (and much lower-magnitude) way, Kaine's flaw tonight was the same as Trump's flaw last Monday. He was too easy to bait, and Pence used that to his advantage more than once. (Though Pence lost his own cool a few times, and it hurt him worse when he did). Pence's complete inability to defend Trump was pretty visible, though. Kaine was absolutely better at articulating policy, though. And yeah, I wish he'd taken the opportunity to attack Pence on all the anti-woman and anti-LGBT poo poo he did in Indiana, though I'd guess by that point he knew that his attacks weren't really helping him and he decided (probably too late) that the high road was a better idea. I will be really surprised if there aren't a few more "look, guys, don't tell Donald, but it's okay, Pence is going to be the real president, and did you see how well he did?" comments from the Republicans between now and the election. (And I sincerely hope there are, because, even if that's his actual plan, saying it would utterly infuriate Trump.)

Like look, I'm not saying Kaine came off well. But it's not like Pence just failed. He failed because of measured things Kaine was doing. The optics of this debate were different, but it's the same poo poo as the Presidential debate. Clinton and Kaine both knew exactly what they were doing and controlled the show. The only difference was that Pence just got huffy while doing Ronald Reagan cosplay.
