pence looked more presidential than his running mate, which improves pence's image a bit but since his running mate is the one running for POTUS, this makes his ticket look worse.

Neither here nor there, but I really liked that Kaine caught himself before saying "husband" in that abortion question.

kaine did not come across as a tactful, master politician a la diamond joe or HRC. pence is a horrible subhuman troll person for the plethora of horrific beliefs he holds, but he looked and sounded prepared, and kaine came across as all of the worst "step dad" stereotypes that every late night comedian has been riffing on since the DNC.

if TRUMP could've managed to completely disappear immediately following the RNC and allowed pence to be the sole voice of the campaign, they might actually be polling even with HRC. fortunately TRUMP's varied psychoses won't allow that to happen.

This wasn't good for anyone, but the Republicans really needed a Hail Mary. They did not get it. As such, it's basically keeping things status quo, which basically means that the Democrats won. That said, I would've liked to of seen Mike Pence get taken to task for being a piece of poo poo

a flipped ticket with Pence as Pres and TRUMP as VP looks like it would actually give the HRC machine a run for her money. not because Pence is objectively a master politician, but because he can act the part fuckin leagues better than TRUMP, and TRUMP being a loose cannon works much better as the VP.

This is only true if you think Americans are too dumb to understand several weeks of ad bombardment telling them variations of "A vote for Trump is literally a vote for Mike Pence. He will be president, not Donald Trump, who will not be involved except informally because we do still love him we swear"

Which I'm not saying is wrong, but I think it's a pretty silly hangup. The ticket is still the ticket, Pence can pick a VP or they can pick a new ticket, people will get it. I think.

As far as wedge issues go, I've always thought that the connections to Russia are the most likely to gain traction. I'm surprised that it hasn't been brought up more, but maybe that's starting to change.

There is absolutely no way that Trump's ego allows him to drop out. He'll go full poll unskewing first, and it'll be a Karl Rove on Fox in 2012 kind of denial when he actually loses.

If this was about a Pence setting himself up for 2020, it makes a certain kind of sense. There's no way that the U.S. realigns to be friendly to Russia, even if Trump wins, and of all the things for which there will be a reckoning after the election, this flirtation with Russia will be among the most brutal. There's no way that if Pence went even a little soft on Putin, that he wouldn't be called to account for all the horrible crap Putin does in the next four years in attack ad after attack ad first in the primary and if he survives that, then in the general.

I don't know that Pence was deliberately setting himself up for 2020 like pundits are saying but at some point of that debate (or maybe before) he clearly made the decision that he was playing for himself and didn't give a poo poo what Trump has said.

Ironically I think it hurts this 2020 thing because tomorrow the story is "Pence lied".
