As long as it doesn't go beyond a reference like that, it's pretty close to what I was thinking of. Though, a better example might be SH2's mention of Walter Sullivan in a news article. Same world, and the series has continuity, but not much overlap.

Just wanna reiterate again that nobody's saying it was a purposefully malicious anti-gay/anti-treatment for mentally ill people (?) thing. This game is not a hate crime, it's just schlock that is based on (whether intentionally or not) harmful tropes that are worth discussing and criticizing. Many things are internalized or normalized, so a developer thinking "This penis will scare a straight dude probably" is not necessarily someone consciously exercising flagrant homophobia.

yeah I know but when some people are throwing around the word misogynistic and homophobic when describing a videogame where a man chases you around with a machete (and sometimes that man has his dick hanging out) it just seems like they're getting mad about things that the devs never really intended

Literally no one said that. It's cliche and it leans on some fairly trite and hurtful tropes regarding homosexuality, mental illness and sexual violence and doesn't even try to do something new or interesting with it.

It's like someone made a game based on Mr Friendly from Half Life. The cut enemy that was supposed to kill the player by stabbing them with a giant dick.

I think people's issues with the outlast games are less with the content and more with the presentation; it's understandable that if you went in expecting something relatively mature--within the context of the genre, anyway--that you'd then be turned off when you get schocky exploitation-grade stuff.

To bring it back to the Alien analogy someone mentioned earlier, you can have a relatively "mature" film that deals with sexual violence like Alien (or Rosemary's Baby, or Repulsion, or..) or you can have a film like "Humanoids from the Deep" which is a trashy B-movie that's just literally about sea monsters raping and killing women. I think a lot of people's issues with Outlast would go away if it was more of a Column A text and less of a Column B--or at least if it more honestly presented itself as the latter.

Pages ago but I think you nailed it.

Outlast seemed to have this hype around it that it was really going to be something special and instead ends up being a dumb B movie, which is totally fine. I love Humanoids from the Deep but it sells itself clearly as being a dumb B movie about rapist fish monsters (which to be honest is one of the funniest scenes in the movie because the suit is so goofy looking)

The little I played of Isolation I thought "Hey this is Outlast but much better" and not just because I already have a familiarity with the Aliens universe, but because it manages to build tension without a ton of loud noises and dumb jump scares.

What I'm saying is Outlast is the the big loud dumb kid who thinks they're super deep and Badass because they take the most controversial stance on something, while Isolation (from my little time with it,maybe an hour) is the quiet kid in the corner who when they do open their mouth has something well reasoned and interesting to say.

If you like Outlast I'm not saying you're wrong, different strokes and all that, personally I found it tedious and annoying and all of its scares were the most obvious choice of scares. I'm all for a gaming landscape where we can have deep, thought provoking games like SH2 and dumb poo poo like Outlast or Emily Wants to Play (or any other jump fest) I'd just like there to be more open discussion about these things as well as a bit more clear communication about what you're getting yourself into.

If I waste an hour and half watching some schlock on Netflix then I'm out an hour and a half of time and I can move on with my life, but if I'm buying a game that's a larger time/money commitment.

Basically I want better horror games and I'm foolishly hoping the genre will mature a bit more the way the genre has in film.

Again I'm not advocating for the elimination or censorship of the B-movie schlock because when it's done right it's fantastic, but from what I took away from Outlast, it was a lot of noise and bluster with nothing behind it.

You act as if "throwing around" words like homophobic and misogynistic is akin to throwing around slurs and stuff. Don't take criticism of media as if they're a personal affront towards you. They are valid terms to describe things in this world and are not marks of total damnation on a piece of media. Just because something is racist, misogynistic, homophobic, transphobic, etc etc etc, doesn't mean that we should throw the whole drat thing out, and it seems like every "anti-S.JW" type of person thinks that is what "S.JWs" are advocating. Throwing out tons of media because of a single fault. This is completely not the case, nobody is advocating censorship or book burning, but critical analysis. You can still enjoy tons of poo poo while admitting that parts of it have problems, it doesn't make YOU a bad person to enjoy a game or movie that has a rape scene in it, for example. Another example: I'm super into Rocky Horror and it features two people getting coerced into sex by a predatory bisexual transvestite. Should I stop liking this ridiculous b-movie because of that? That doesn't make one a hypocrite to acknowledge that someone you love has flaws or harmful aspects to it.

You are not the media you enjoy, and people saying "This bit is really tryhard and homo/transphobic" or whatever is not someone personally attacking you.

This.

However there are idiots who will tell you that you're bad for liking things that are "Problematic". Those people are assholes and they ruin everything.

Context of when something was produced is another aspect that the assholes of the "SJW" community seem to miss, and again will outright tell you it's bad and wrong because it's X Y or Z without taking a moment to look at the context in which the work was created.

Example: Blacula. Legit good movie that has more going for it than the title would suggest but there are two really stereotypical gay characters in the film. In 2016 it makes you say "Holy poo poo that's really really bad" but it's a movie from the 70s, so you either accept that it is what it is and enjoy (or not) the film or you act like an rear end in a top hat on the internet about it and piss people off.
