The next logical step of the reasonable criticism of underfunding would be to raise taxes on the rich and fund security, and Republicans don't want to do that because they're only interested in funding boondoggles that funnel trillions of dollars to defense contractors. So there's that, and then also they went whole hog on the insane conspiracy theory strategy from the moment Obama took office, and they're kind of locked into it now, both because they depend on the crazy poo poo to get people to vote for them in the general and because any hint of conciliation or compromise toward Obama will be used to bash you in the primaries.

punk rebel ecks posted:

During the primaries, one of the key arguments against voting for Bernie Sanders ....After seeing Trump falter so hard during this general election, do people still think that would the case?

Yes. Even more so now than then because Clinton has exceeded my already high expectations for her ability to play Trump. I believe that Trump would have done to Bernie what he did to Jeb! And what Pence did to Kaine. Sone of my reasons for this belief, in no particular order, are:

1) Clinton's most effective way to provoke Trump was to imply he's not actually that rich. She ended his lucid period in the debate with that jab. Bernie, otoh, would have been attacking Trump's wealth as a negative - which involves acknowledging or even exaggerating his wealth. This line of attack would play well only with voters Bernie already has while energizing Trump's base and effectively fluffing Trump on stage. Happy Trump wouldn't have come across as unhinged as angry Trump. Why yes I am immensely wealthy, because I'm smart and a great businessman which is what America needs!

2) Republican women ignore sexism as hard as they possibly can. You have to shove it directly in their faces in an absolutely undeniable way to get them to admit a republican candidate views them as lesser beings. But when you do this they get very mad. When Trump talks down to another man he doesn't rile them up the way he does talking down to Clinton. It also energizes women on the left like you wouldn't believe. Put a man - any man - on that stage and this dynamic is lost. Not only does it not trigger the same reaction but also Trump is less rude to other men. Not that he isn't rude, but he is more challenging and less contemptuous, I want you to be happy, Secretary. Which again means he doesn't come across as badly as he did. As Pence just showed us, you don't lose simply for being an rear end. I suspect we won't see the full fury of the scorned till election day and think we have non-trivial odds of a Mondale quality trouncing of trump with Clinton. A loss so overwhelming would do for progressives what Reagan did for conservatives and change the course of the nation for decades to come.

3) Taxes. Both Bernie and Trump refused to release their tax returns. Trump probably because his image hinges on you thinking he is much richer than he is and Bernie probably because his image hinges on people thinking he is much poorer than he actually is. The guy whose tag line is about fighting banks and stopping the millionaires and billionaires can't let it be known that he is himself a millionaire several times over with not one but three houses and presumable an ample nest egg invested in Wall Street. So with Bernie on the stage the tax question is aimed at both of them instead of just Trump and Trump has the better answer. I filed extensive financial disclosures, this guy hasn't filed anything! What's he hiding?!?"

4- Cuba. Everyone is so happy that Trump's illegal dealings with Fidel will probably tip the balance in Clinton's favor in Florida. But that's just business. Bernie, by contrast, is on record as gushing about how awesome Fidel is: http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/presidential-races/272485-sanders-defends-past-praise-of-fidel-castro. And you can bet your booty that the self described socialist would have been called to defend those remarks in the debate. You can kiss Florida buh bye right there and it's part of why Clinton trounced Bernie 64-33 in Florida.

5- Trump kicks Bernie's butt in terms of personal presentation/grooming. Bernie limbos under even the very low male bar for that. His unkempt-ness signals that he doesn't care enough to take this seriously and doesn't respect the people he seeks to lead. People who don't dress up routinely look uncomfortable and awkward when forced to dress up.

6- Trump can't win African American voters, but against Bernie his attempts to de-motivate African American voters would work much better. Bernie doesn't like talking about minority issues and is on record calling them a "distraction" so he wouldn't be attacking Trump on that flank with anywhere near the vigor or sincerity of Clinton. Bernie's handling of Flint was awful and he matches Trump gaffe for gaffe in things like calling African American neighborhoods, "ghettos". There is footage of Bernie on the Ed show massively overestimating the unemployment and criminality of black youth in Ferguson. Clinton did amazing with the question about racism in police departments in a way that will GOTV. Bernie would have shot himself in the foot. Repeatedly.

7- Debating requires being quick on your mental feet. This is not Bernie's strong suit. Even Bernie's ardent supporters were begging him to come up with new material and not pivot everything to the same old stump speech after a few months. Trump could pull up any speech of his ever and come up with zingers to use in the debate and Bernie would walk face first into each one.

8- Bernie negates a lot of Trump's negatives by being as uninformed/unprepared as Trump is on many issues. For example, Trump talks about renegotiating our national debt and Bernie talks about putting farmers on the board at the fed. Hillary can call Trump out for not having actual plans to back his rhetoric. Bernie has no idea if it's legal to break up the big banks because he's never looked into it despite campaigning on it for months. Hillary is calm, cool, and collected in a dramatic contrast to Trump. Bernie's schtik is to shout a lot while waving his finger at you ... Think how Kaine's anger made Pence look better/more in control. Bernie would do that for Trump. We saw how Trump got under people's skin in the primary and then made them look weak for getting angry.

I could go on at some length in this vein but that's plenty to start with if you want to rebut.

I still think Sanders would manage to defeat Trump primarily because Trump is actually an idiot. Most of Trump's success has come due to a hell of a lot of luck in the primary or due to being propped up hard by the right wing media. His entire campaign apparatus relies on grifting the RNC to have any kind of organization or ground game, and I think we've seen that when the media does decide to go after him his 'I will use the media for publicity and not run ads at all' thing turns on him real hard. Trump's seeming successes, such as they are, are mostly due to tapping into cultural forces and a large and organized establishment that keeps telling itself 'With enough whiskey the supreme court is worth any price, we can control him, it'll be fine'.

I don't doubt Sanders' campaign wouldn't be nearly as well run or that he'd struggle more fighting him, but Trump is not a political genius.
